New Email Poll - What Email Solution Do You Use?
LisaJill replied to dlevens's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
I use mail.app on my pc - you didn't include any local solutions, only webmail type ones (other than other, which I chose). I like having my private and confidential stuff locally, that way it stays with me and it can be backed up. I use gmail for other stuff but it's not my main email. -
You see, now it's 7:14pm and I just woke up from a nap. Bets are my answers will still be unintelligible, I could try them in Latin for both of our amusement? Anyway, Shared dedicated server? It's either dedicated or shared. Do you mean dedi-semicated? I'd love to tell you how many people are on the different types of servers but I can't - not because i don't want to but because I don't know. =) I remember reading some statistics and somewhere in my head there's a number 4 floating around but I'm not sure why. Thank goodness autumn recess is nearly here! What I can tell you is that the servers are routinely undersold so as to ensure more than enough resources and minimal downtime. A tech, or someone with a better memory, may be able to offer the harder numbers you're after. =)

Even more discussion board software. =) I admin a phpbb forum on a friends site and quite like it. But I dont' really have much more to input. =)

A 404 just means that you have the incorrect URL. What is your domain and what folder is it installed into? If you're not comfortable posting that feel free to PM me.

I see this and will be adding it by this weekend at the latest. Just have 3 assignments tomorrow and a major Latin exam on Friday. My apologies for the delay. =)

Oh, one more answer =) TCH does automatic weekly and monthly backups. No cost. =) As far as other backups you really should do your own and you can set cron jobs to do backups - there's no cost for that, of course.

I'm really tired so bear with me, I probably should let someone else answer but hey. =) A shared server may be fine for you - it sounds like a reseller account would be perfect. Really here, what it comes down to, are certain things: 1) Do you need a streaming server? 2) Do you need shell access? 3) Do you use an absolute ton of bandwidth/high CPU intensive scripts? As far as downtime, it is very low but these are computers and they're not entirely predictable. I, personally, have only seen about 2 downtimes and they lasted about 5 minutes max over the course of my stay here - I'm on a shared server. =) .htaccess - yes, full ability there as far as I know. Installing scripts - as long as they don't require shell access, absolutely. You will also need to be careful with cpu intensive scripts. logs - yes permissions - yes, obviusly you want to be careful with this. That's with a shared server. With a dedicated server you can pretty much do what you want within the terms of the AUP. Things like CPU intensiveness won't matter as it's only your sites you'd be affecting. =) Shell access etc as well. I'm not sure if we have dedicated servers available right now so you'd need to submit a ticket to sales about that. Yes we use MySQL manager and PHPMyAdmin. You can do remote sql connections but I'm not experienced with Navicat. I THINk someone here is using it but that may just be a thread that was about it, not someone using it. I'm tired is all. =) A search on navicat may yield info on that. You also get a 30 day money back gaurantee, so you can test out plans and see what you need, etc. Hope that helps!

I read that the latest build of firefox (a nightly, not in distribution yet) has an option to open all external links in a new tab.

It's only 4:49pm, I can't sleep. I have three assignments due tomorrow. I'm just tired 'cos I just got back from horseback riding. =)

target="_blank"? google. there's probably better keywords, but there's a few arguments in there. Sorry Tompas, I'm exhausted and didn't mean to be blunt. =) But it's out there, has been since before I started with my new site in June '03.

You need to make sure that that user has access to the database. Just creating them isn't enough. The way to do that is choose the user in the drop down and the database in the other drop down and click "Add User". Proof this is correct will be a bunch of MYSQL connection/init strings listed there. =)

It's been discussed about a million times in every conceivable location. For about a year, maybe two. =)

The idea here is that if someone wants to visit a site not on the current site, they have a host of options to open it in a new window, including cmd or ctrl click, right click -> open in new window, etc. This is up to THEM not up to you - visitors always had a choice, by adding that target you remove their choice. (in some browsers anyway) But here is not a proper venue for this argument, it's been done over and over and over and none of US (that I know of) have a say in the standards - anyway, it's already deprecated. =) Lots of javascripts can do it, but I don't code javascript. Google for "javascript open link in new window" and you'll have about 30 pages of 'em. =)
-
What does "doesn't work" mean? In what way is it not working? Is there an error message when you go to that page? What about in the server error logs (via cpanel)? Just as an FYI - there was a post some time ago that larger Mambo sites are massively resource intensive so while it's not a banned script, be very careful with it. =)

You need to submit a ticket to the Help Desk for this. =)

I have had a chance to play with Poser Pro and it is one of the most entertaining and fun programs I've ever had. Incredibly, immensely powerful. Good Tutorials can be a lifesafer; it's an amazing repository. Bryce is great too, but I'm more interesting in people. I find Poser Pro more fun to play with though Bryce can be entertaining. Then you can import Poser graphics into Bryce and end up with a complete picture. Impressive stuff. =)
-
First you have to choose a program to use. The industry standard is (expensive...) photoshop. Depending what you want to do there are a ton of excellent tutorials at Good Tutorials. That said if you're mostly interested in forms (people mostly) check out Poser Pro (you can see what can be done at poserpros.com) and in landscapes check out Bryce. =) But the amazing artists from those using Photoshop for finishing, from what I undertand. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them....

Aha, possessed. I didn't know that, I hate the file manager in general. Sorry boxturt. =)
-
Possessed? What's it doing?
-
boxturt - I disagree, if the script gave information on what it should be there's no harm in using the numbers, after all if one doesn't know what chmod is then one won't know the necessary combination to get the right number. Btw: You can do this from your ftp program if you prefer - in windows, most will allow you to via right click; but I'm not sure of the specifics of each program. =)
-
There won't be, short of using javascript (which would be a lameo way to get around the standards, according to the real zealots I tend to agree...) The idea is that control of windows should be in the hands of the person browsing, not the person creating the website. (this is an oft debated and "hot" topic, if you want to read about it, google target="_blank" or something similar... =) )
-
U[pload it then in file manager via cpalen - navigate to where you uploaded the .tgz and click on the name of the file, in the right it'll pop up some options, one is "Extract File Contents". =)
-
You would be best to submit a ticket as the techs that would deal with this don't always monitor the forums. Also moving this for organization. =)

I'm not really familiar enough with the import format to say what's wrong there and I"m at university right now, not able to do any comparisons. There is a copy of the format in the MT manual if you want to compare. The dashes are seperators and it can be those, needs to be the right number. Unless someone has other suggestions you might want to ask at the WP support forums there as well, as I'm sure this has come up before and they love getting new converts. I'll check back after classes (around 3pm EST) to see how you're doing though. =)
-
I know X (the icons one I think that is) and Monsoon (choice between read and blue) (pretty, a list format, I use that one) are available. I'm not sure what others. You can submit a ticket to have yours changed if you're not happy with it. =)
