God I love my works filtering. I can't even visit htxp://www.naomifilter.org. The page has been blocked because the content has been deemed unrelated to business needs. URL: htxp://www.naomifilter.org Reason: Banned phrase found. The man who deals with the filtering is a total idiot. He once blocked eBay but then unblocked it and now he's blocked PayPal. So I can buy things but not pay for them :| He's also blocked my domain :-(

Looks to me like all routers work the same where you can block specific urls or block urls that contain certain words but they will not filter the pages content. Guess it's time to fork out $35 for cybernanny or similar need two copies so $70, about £40 in real money).

Maybe Americans should just learn to spell then we wouldn't have this problem. I should invent a time machine and kill Webster x-(

Yup. I'm waiting to see how much Symantec screw up Sygate. I mean MS has dropped FrontPage in favour of Expression and whilst expression is good the preview, fo a handcoder like me, is useless as it doesn't support the CSS hover pseudo attribute. And how do you change the spell checker dictionary on FF2 as I'm fed up of being told words like colour and favour are wrong x-(

Maybe IE should start to use the Gecko engine lol. Or MS should offer Firefox as a download on Windows Update and an option when Vista comes out.

Well MS claim IE 7 was a total rewrite from the ground up but as any programmer will tell you you always 'borrow' snippets of code from your old work. With something as big as a web browser it would of taken them a lot longer than it did to rewrite the rendering engine from the ground up so possibly the gui is a total rewrite and the rendering engine just got updated with better CSS support etc.

Actually the IE7 exploit was posted within 24 hours of IE7s release. I bet they basically checked the beta and RC versions for exploits using a list of old exploits and then checked any they had found against IE7 when it was released.

16,999,999 of these left after purchasing an iPod 50% of 10 is 5. In my experience statistics don't mean a thing as they are always carefully worded so they appear to mean something they usually do not.

Windows XP both home and pro. I have no reason to use Linux as my main OS but I do have a copy of Knoppix on DVD that I can boot into when needed.

Cool. New icons for Lazarus

I don't mind spending money on hardware I'm just reluctant about spending it on software.

Yes just work was blocking them and making them huge. The HTML is stil messed up though. I just checked in both Firefox and IE <A HREF="aim:goim?screenname=tchgurubill"<br /><IMG SRC="http://tchstatus.com:8080/aim/tchgurubill"<br /><A HREF="ymsgr:sendIM?tchgurubill"><IMG SRC="http://tchstatus.com:8080/yahoo/tchgurubill"<br /><IMG SRC="http://tchstatus.com:8080/msn/tchgurubill@hotmail.com"</div> Any more ideas on routers?

I think there's a problem with your status images. They are showing with the size as 2608x2573. Actually the HTML appears messed up. The HTML is <A HREF="aim:goim?screenname=tchgurubill"<br /><IMG SRC="http://tchstatus.com:8080/aim/tchgurubill"<br />

Oh I'm aware of host files and could lock it to admin write only if i wanted to but that only blocks domains. I don't want to be blocking geocities.com just because some idiots abuse it hence wanting a content filter. My only other option is networking through my machine and using filtering software on there but setting up a wireless network that way is a nightmare.
-
The Linksys sounds like it may do the job but they certainly wont win any clear English awards (a UK award). Ifyou look at page 57 of the user guide it says but does that mean it looks for the words in the url or the content :-/ I have looked at CyberNanny etc but was hoping to avoid the cost. the free alternative (ParentControl toolbar) is a bit rubbish and easy to bypass.

Content filtering where I can block certain terms/words. Such as Smoothwall Guardian offers. Bayesian perhaps.

My partner is getting laptops for the boys for Christmas so muggins here has to set up a wireless network. I am after a wireless router that has good content filtering and preferably logging so I can control what they view and keep an eye on their activity. Any recommendations? I did ask Linksys for more details about theirs but getting sensible information from a help desk is near impossible.

Given that most hosts use PHP4 still I don't see companies release scripts that require PHP5. you should make your script work on PHP4 and then add extra stuff that requires PHP5 but only if PHP5 is installed. Hope that makes sense. Like it's fine designing a website using all the latest CSS so long as it still works in a site that doesn't support it.

I've tried Olympus and it's 60 odd database tables puts me off.
-
Don't forget that a CSS file can be anything including a PHP file. You could of just used php for the css file and told it not to show the relevant lines when the W3C user agent was visiting. Irrelevant now I know but thought I would pass it on.
-
That applies to any script you have running not just forums and not just phpBB. My site has been defaced twice. The first time was because of an exploit in IPB and the second time because of an exploit in Ashnews (which I still use but have manually patched since it's a dead project)
-
I've been using phpBB for years and its fine so long as you keep it upto date. I only stopped using it recently because it's old and behind the times but hopefully phpBB Olympus will change this upon it's release. I currently use SMF on my Lazarus forums and have just installed it for a friend of mine. I use UNB for my main sites forum. If security is your only concern then make sure your phpB is upto date and you'll be fine. If you do want to look at other forums look at http://opensourcecms.com as it lets you play with several scripts and even login to the admin.

Yes most Linux users do know better (there are a few stupid ones though). But my argument holds true. If Linux was the mainstream OS then it would have the same number of stupid users Windows has now. I personally believe that people should have to take lessons then pass a test before they are allowed to own a PC.

Paid for products do tend to feel more polished than their free counterparts but they have to be to attract customers. I prefer the AOL anti virus myself as Avast let me down and missed a virus. Open Office takes some getting used to after years of Office. As to Photoshop Vs Gimp have a look at Paint.NET. Not as powerful as either but very nice for a free program. Paid for products are usually better than the free version. Paid for anti viruses tend to be better than the free ones. Paid for forum scripts tend to be better than the free ones. The one time I would definitely say free is better than paid is when it comes to free love

Yup flash is good in small doses such as playing video (youtube) or games but I don't think it should be used for whole sites. Think of the poor dial up users if nothing else.
