I ran osCommerce for a while with a few thousand items and never had a problem with server loads. It was heavile modified, running many contributions. While I do not know what is optimal, I can say that we have many members that are running it and have no issues.

I am not sure if those qualify as disasters, they are more like annoyances. Fire here is not often natural but an effect of a smoker with a litter problem, though there are a few that are lightning related.
