Create A Db Through Phpmyadmin
cajunman4life replied to cajunman4life's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
It is not an error. As abinidi noted, you create your databases and add users from the "MySQL Databases" page in CPanel. I presume this is to 1) prevent scripts from automatically creating databases, and 2) make sure that database names and users are properly prefixed with your CPanel username, so each user can properly access their databases (and only their databases). The MySQL databases are stored on the server, but not in a location you can access directly. Uploading a MySQL database to the correct location and having it properly recognized in CPanel and phpMyAdmin would require assitance from the Help Desk (not recommended except in unusual circumstances). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ok, you answered my question. It appears you and I posted at the same time. Thanks for the answer! -
Create A Db Through Phpmyadmin
cajunman4life replied to cajunman4life's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Thanks for your reply! I'll do that. Does anybody know where the MySQL databases are stored in a virtual hosting account? For instance, on my Gentoo server they are located in /var/lib/mysql, perhaps they are in a similar location? Or are they actually stored under your user account? -
Hi, in phpMyAdmin, "Create Database" under MySql says "No Privileges". Is that an error? Shouldn't I be able to create a new database? I suppose I could always create the db on my machine at home, and upload it (btw, where are mysql db's stored on the virtual hosting accounts?).

Questions About Dedicated Servers
cajunman4life replied to cajunman4life's topic in Pre-Sales Questions
Thanks for the clarification Bill! I'll keep this in mind. -
Recent (8.0 beta) builds of Netscape are FireFox re-packaged. Just like Netscape 6 and 7 were re-packaged builds of the Mozilla Suite. You won't see much of a difference. I also check my designs in Opera. My main site has a small quirk in IE, but frankly I could care less. Most of the visitors to my site use either Mozilla Suite or FireFox.

Just a quick mention... the CD you see sitting on top of the HP NetServer... it's the 1958 recording of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture by the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (now called the Minnesota Symphony I believe). This is (as far as I'm concerned) the best version, complete with cannon fire and cathedral bells, just as Tchaikovsky intended. Sorry, but I'm a bit of a classical music buff.

Hey guys, I missed the iPod contest, but I decided to post pictures of my "work" area (located at home). There are currently 4 machines on this shelving unit (2 servers, and 2 old desktops that I turned in to servers). Here goes: (please excuse the mess, click thumbs for bigger image, but be nice!) Here you see the upper half of my shelf, with the monitor along with KVM switch in the middle. You see Tux standing guard by my switch. And here is the bottom half, partially blocked by my dresser and TV. What a mess! Now we see a "full frontal" of the top shelves. The machine at the top is an IBM 300PL, which my other site currently runs on. This machine runs Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 (Sarge). Below that is my old web server, an IBM 300GL. Currently it serves as my backup web server and DMZ server, and runs FreeBSD 5.3. And now, my favorite server. It's an HP NetServer LPr, and it's earmarked to be my other site's web server very soon. It very happily runs Gentoo Linux. Previously it ran Solaris 9 x86 and Fedora Core 3. Here's a peek at my "dust collector." I call it that because that's all it's doing; I haven't had it on in quite a while. It's too noisy. Anyways it's a Compaq 6400R quad Xeon with 1.2GB RAM. It's a great machine, but far too loud for my bedroom. It runs Fedora Core 3. And finally, a picture of my favorite host's website loaded in Mozilla (running from my Gentoo server... Don't ask why I run GNOME on a server... I still don't know for sure). Well that's it for now folks. Maybe I'll get pictures of my cubicle at the office up soon. You would cry if you saw how cluttered my desk is... and to think, it was so clean when I started there only 4 1/2 months ago. Anyone else for pictures? I'm curious to see other people's "setup"...

Questions About Dedicated Servers
cajunman4life replied to cajunman4life's topic in Pre-Sales Questions
Speaking of dedicated servers, what exactly constitutes as "managed?" Say if I get a dedicated, unmanaged server, does that mean I'm responsible for all that goes on on that server (ie a service going down, needing to be restarted, or upgrading the "packages" on it after a security alert)? Thanks for any direction you can provide on this matter. Just out of curiousity, do you have any dedicated servers available? -
Posts also go in the MySQL database. Welcome to the forums!

Questions About Dedicated Servers
cajunman4life replied to cajunman4life's topic in Pre-Sales Questions
Heh... I used to have 6 running in my apartment before I started getting dedicated servers (so much quieter now, and so much more bandwidth to my servers.) The dedicateds are good deals though. 100 Mbps each in a secure datacenter sure beats half a dozen in a non-controlled environment sharing a DSL line (in my case). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You have a point. You know, I work at a datacenter... I wonder if I could get like an "employee discount"... -
Questions About Dedicated Servers
cajunman4life replied to cajunman4life's topic in Pre-Sales Questions
The Main Difference is because one is SEMI-Dedicated and the others are Fully Dedicated systems. So on the Semi-Dedicated server you will have less bandwidth. Also Having 4 servers running in your Home..... Hopefully up north in the winter because the heat that they produce must make it quite cozy <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ahh, SEMI... got ya. I'm surprised I didn't notice that... I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other. As for the 4 servers, only one gets hot (Compaq 6400R quad Xeon). The others run actually very cool, and the temperature in my room generally ranges from 70 to 75 (degrees F). It is a welcome addition in the winter. We'll see how it does in the summer, I just got these servers over the winter. The noise is the biggest issue, because I currently have them in my bedroom (I'm not single, but we don't live together... this will change once we do live together, or so I'm told). As usual, thanks for the fast response. Your support never ceases to amaze me. -
Hi, I noticed while looking at the dedicated servers that the "lowest" has only 95GB data transfer/month, whereas the upper two have 1,000GB... is that a mistake? If not, why the *landslide* difference? Pushin for the "upper end models?" While I'm looking at a reseller account, down the road I may find a dedicated server fits my needs better. I am examining colocation as well, as I have a few servers in my home but only keep 3 of the 4 running all the time (the other is WAY too loud). I'm also looking at expanding my server collection. Any answers are of course greatly appreciated. Thanks guys! Aaron Graves

Hmm... perhaps I'll just keep my current hosting account when opening a reseller account. Thanks Don!

Another quick question regarding reseller hosting... currently I have the silver hosting plan. When I purchase a reseller account, would that be moved over? Also, I've read previously that you get an equal share of resources (ie if your reseller account has 3GB storage and 50GB transfer, you get the same amout for your site that is seperate of that). So I guess the large question of all that is, can I have multiple domains and sites for "my" resources (not the ones I'm reselling). Hopefully that is clear, as even I am having some problems reading it over. Thanks for your answers!

I'm looking at the Deluxe, however would not consider anything "smaller" than the standard account. So that would go well. Thanks for your fast answer!

I've got a question for reselling here. I've noticed a lot of people that have a reseller account don't actually resell the space. I'm considering actually reselling it, and wanted to know how the "branding" works. Am I given "private" name servers, or would they simply be ns1.totalchoicehosting.com and ns2.totalchoicehosting.com. Just exploring some options here, I've got some servers at home and some friends willing to put up sites, however at this point it's cost prohibative to get the "business" internet services through my cable ISP. Thanks in advance for your answers! And if it matters much, I currently have an account here at TCH (I think I saw mention before that to open a reseller account, since I'm already an existing customer, I need to submit a helpdesk ticket). Thanks again!
-
Hey, this is mainly targeted at the TCH guys, but available for all to read. I've been a customer for only a few months, but I love TCH. Also, I've noticed that TCH outsources to data centers on the coastal areas. If you're looking to expand, look no further than the Midwest (ie Omaha, NE). I work for a company called (i)Structure, which is a division of Level(3) Communications. We are a datacenter, much like the ones TCH currently uses. Our facilities are top-notch, and our hardware techs (namely, me), are top-notch. It's at least an option for you to check out. Feel free to contact me with any questions! And thanks for being #1 in my book. Aaron Graves

I used to use SmartFTP, but I noticed recently that between the hours of 9am and 5pm, it would give me some kind of "registration reminder" if it is being used for commercial purposes. So I opted for FileZilla. Before I did business with TCH I used to host my own site. I was having problems with my FreeBSD server one day, and as a quick-fix, I moved my website over to my windows pc, and installed the FileZilla server (I never edited anything on my site at the server, always did it via telnet and ftp). But those days are over, I decided to go the pay-to-host route. And I'm extremely happy too.

I'm in agreement with kevan_j. CoffeeCup HTML Editor is one of the best I've ever worked with. Granted, it cost $49, but you get free upgrades for life, even at the end of the month when they release a new version and up the price by about $20. As for their hosting? Err... well... I'm here aren't I? lol.

I would definately consider using ANY firewall other than Windows Firewall. Personally, I used to use ZoneAlarm, but had problems with version 5 and haven't gone back yet. I'm currently using Kerio Personal Firewall, which is completely free (after a 30 day trial of the "full" version, you can continue to run it. Supposedly some features are disabled, but for the average user, they wouldn't notice the change).

The only two things I missed from AIM are: 1) No HTML displayed in the profiles window (apparently this is available in the pay version, which is why I went from Trillian to GAIM, don't like the idea of paying for an instant messenger). 2) No typing notification for the AIM network (ie "so and so is typing...", usually the only way I know if someone is writing a novel or just ignoring me ) Just my $0.02

Is there a way that I could change the style associated with phpBB? I've been to phpBB.com and looked at the various styles, I'm just wondering of TCH would allow me to change the style? Thanks.
