I'm not that bothered as a user, because I don't use the Geman version (I don't even use ebay, so... ). But I am bothered by what has been done with a great piece of software and the consequences it may have on it's public image.

Saw this one in a thread in MozillaZine's forums: "How much junk can get installed on a user's PC by merely visiting a single site [using Microsoft's Internet Explorer]?"(with a scary video of the spyware horrors!) You have to see it for yourself. I was shocked!! All I can say is: I'm glad I stopped using Internet Explorer a long long time ago and later gave up on Windows, too!

It seems the thread Bob pointed us to has, according to one of the MozillaZine forums' moderators, "[...] degenerated into name calling, and is basically going in circles." and so he closed it. Does anyone have any more info about this?

I second Thomas suggestion of trying Thunderbird. It's much better, faster, lighter, not vulnerable to all those pesky IE viruses and exploits and it has a ton of great features that OE doesn't have

First of all, welcome to the family, edward! As for your problem, using localhost should work in any situation... the equivalent IP would be 127.0.0.1 but if your script didn't work when using "localhost", I don't think it will work if you use "127.0.0.1". Can you provide some more details? Also, moving to a more appropriate forum, for better organization and exposure.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I've been sick and I'm not in the forums as much as usual during the day. As Dick suggested, read the tutorial and then, if you have any questions, just ask. It's much easier and quicker than we trying to guess what you do and don't know and trying to walk you through it.

You're probably facing the usual problem with the username Don't worry, it's simple to solve. You just have to note a few things: even though you crete a database and call it "mydb", the actual name of the created database will be "yourcpanelusername_mydb". So you have to make sure you're using this. The same applies to the DB users. If you create a user and name it "myuser", the actual username will be "yourcpanelusername_myuser". Try it again with this freshly acquired knowledge and let me know if it helps

As you can see from the links Thomas posted, yes, these browsers are available on various platforms I never used it personally but it seems that Safari is a very good browser. You could get Firefox for those few sites that won't work on Safari. I don't recommend Opera for that because it also has a few problems. On the other hand, I did stumble upon a couple of sites that didn't work correctly on Firefox but did work perfectly on Opera, so you may still want to have all three, just in case...

I do agree that Opera's tabbed interface is far better than the one in Firefox. The MDI (Multiple Document Interface) is really nice. I don't think it's faster than Firefox, though. I have them both installed on this machine and they seem to load pages equally fast. Table-heavy pages even look faster in Firefox, not Opera. As for the rest, you should explore some of the Firefox extensions. I have most of the ones you mentioned working in FF via an installed extension

I'm not familiar with Perl but what is the difference between a Perl script written in UTF-8 and a Perl script written in another encoding? What I mean is that I don't understand why the Perl interpreter has a problem with the file character encoding being UTF-8... Anyone has an opinion on this one?

Yep, the way back machine is pretty nice indeed I've known it for quite some time and I can tell you that one of it's many uses is to resolve disputes about which website has copied another (being the guy who helps Tim Murtaugh updating his http://pirated-sites.com site, I know what I'm talking about ). I also use it to show my customers that old websites may not work well in modern browsers, because they weren't built thinking of that. I then use that to explain them why it is important to build their websites following web standards - to make sure their site is "future-proof".

It shouldn't be necessary: Using an FTP program (maybe it works with cPanel's file manager, too but I'm not sure.), rename the 'www' directory to '../www' - that should move it one level up, into your home directory, where it belongs.
