  2. To be honest, nabreu, I'd be careful about how I asked that kind of question. You don't want to look like you're biting the hand that feeds you, if you know what I mean. I dunno, but vague/veiled accusations against the billing department might be considered by some to be in bad form. If you have a specific concern, you might want to PM someone on staff. They usually seem more than willing to help people who make an effort to be nice. I'm sure the Head Guru would be nice about helping -- but you don't help your case by making them angry with you before you ask for help, if you know what I mean. Don't forget, there are *people* on the other end---people, who in my opinion, are working hard and doing a good job. At least that's my opionion, FWIW.

  4. How long does it take for a subdomain to become active? I have a domain parked on my account; Yesterday I had a subdomain, we'll call it subdomain.domainname.com. I wanted to change it to subdomain.parkeddomainname.com but keep the content the same. Anyway, I copied the content to another folder, deleted the old folder name, deleted the subdomain, added the subdomain, deleted the folder, and copied the old folder back with the subdomain name (if that makes sense). But I can't get my subdomain to show up in my browser. cPanel says the subdomain is there and active. The subfolder exists with the same name as the subdomain. But when you go to subdomain.parkeddomain.com, you get the following: >The requested URL could not be retrieved While trying to retrieve the URL: [edited] The following error was encountered: Unable to determine IP address from host name for [edited] The dnsserver returned: Name Error: The domain name does not exist. This means that: The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL. Check if the address is correct. Your cache administrator is root. Is this a help-desk issue? Or do I just need to be patient? (I created another subdomain with a different name, just to check, and that new subdomain is working fine.)
  5. Yes, if you wanted to, you could register a .name domain. As I understand it, that domain extension is reserved for people who want to have a personal website. And you can't pick a string of text--it literally ends in ".name". Also, as I understand it, you have to have it in the following format: firstname.lastname.name or lastname.firstname.name So, I would either have to register mine as paul.pehrson.name or pehrson.paul.name The requirements state that you can only register your legal name, or the name of a fictional character to which you have the legal rights. Here is a Google search that might have some answers to your questions. Best of luck.
  6. Why didn't I read this thread 3 hours ago? I have been doing almost exactly this -- but I've been trying to move it from one subdomain to another (actually, the same subdomain name, but with a different parked domain name). I've been having trouble all morning.

  8. Another thing I would suggest looking at (if you are on dial-up) is if your ISP is using an accelerator. I'll admit, I'm still on dialup , (this is why I know about this...) and in order to speed up the time it takes for pages to load, my ISP installed a program on my computer that reduces image quality in order to download the page faster. I know that Earthlink is one provider that has this ability; I believe AOL has something similar. If I am using Earthlink and IE 6, then I can right-click on an image and tell it to reload that image with full-quality. However, that right-click option isn't available in Firefox. When you talked about image distortion, this is the first thing that came to mind. Maybe it is the answer. Maybe not. Just thought I'd offer it as a possibility.
  9. Just for your information, here is what I see in Firefox 1.0.4 using Win XP: If I were you, I'd follow one of the other suggestions in this thread and avoid layers -- especially if you are going to center your table. (Now if you were to use a left-aligned page, then layers would work okay.) Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
  10. You're welcome! Hey, after all, what's family for?
  11. I have a BA in English (minor in Editing) from Brigham Young University. I currently work as a technical writer for a large software company. Wow---I seem to be one of only a few whose college education is directly related to their current line of work.
  12. If you use Thomas's recommendation (which sounds good to me), you should note that you won't appear at all in the image search result. However, I don't know of a way that you can still show up in the image search result but with a "Denied to conserve bandwidth" message in stead of your image. So either it's (1) allow Google image search to show your images, or (2) don't show up at all in the Google Image Search result list. Best of luck,

  14. Hi Michael. I was reading your original post in the pre-sales forum, and here is the exchange that you are referring to: Yes. If you are expecting a lot of email - and a lot of use of your suto-responders, then you might start triggering some of our anti-spam alarms. Hence you may want to open a ticket at our help desk (link at the top of the page) and talk directly about your requirements. I think that Andy understood your question to mean "are we allowed to use unlimited sequential autoresponders." What it appears that you were really asking is "Does TCH provide a tool to create unlimited sequential autoresponders." The answer to that question is, as far as I can tell, no. I looked up some sequential autoresponders on Google, and all of them have to be purchased; some have a monthly fee, and others you purchase outright and install on your own account. If you want to use an automatic sequential autoresponder, I think you are going to have to purchase the additional software, and then once you have it, you are allowed to install it on your own server. However, if you haven't already, you may want to follow Andy's advice and open a help desk ticket to discuss your specific requirements so you don't get labeled as a spammer and have your account shut down. Best wishes,
  15. April, I agree with Don. The answer to your problem is good site design with easy-to-understand nagivation. The best answer in this situation is not to have links open in new windows, especially when they are links within your site. If you design your site well, users will always be able to navigate through your site easily. On my sites, the main logo almost always is a link back to the home page. And that is in addition to navigation that specifically says "home page" or something similar. Best wishes for a happy fourth of July!

  18. Thanks David, I think I may be in trouble, then. Here is the setting in my awstats config files (I changed the settings on all my domains and in all of my subdomains): ># When this parameter is set to 1, AWStats add a button on report page to # allow to "update" statistics from a web browser. Warning, when "update" is # made from a browser, AWStats is ran as a CGI by the web server user # defined in your web server (user "nobody" by default with Apache, "IUSR_XXX" # with IIS), so the "DirData" directory and all already existing history files # (awstatsMMYYYY[.xxx].txt) must be writable by this user. Change permissions # if required. # Warning: Update process can be long so you might experience "time out" # browser errors if you don't launch AWStats enough frequently. # When set to 0, update is only made when AWStats is ran from the command # line interface (or a task scheduler). # Possible values: 1 or 0 # Default: 0 # AllowToUpdateStatsFromBrowser=1 I changed this setting to "1" becaue I wanted to be able to see more accurate statistics when I went to awstats. By allowing myself to click the update now button, I could get better information than awstats was providing by default. When I searched the forums, this was a solution that I found that seemed to be the best solution for me (since I have absolutley no idea how to create a cron job; nay, not even where to start). I read in a parallel thread that I had to be careful because running the update now button causes the server to work hard, and if we were to click the button frequently we would bring down upon us the ire of the server gurus. Since I only view awstats every other day or so (or less), I wasn't worried about it. But now, it appears, I am opening myself up to a security breach because of my setting. So, I guess I need to switch it back to "0". How then, can I get more frequently updated stats in my awstats?? Thanks for your help.
  19. I don't know about email limits; I'll let one of the TCH mods or staff answer that one, but I know that a number of people put "hosted by TCH" at the bottom of their page so they can get listed in the family pages on the TCH homepage. One of the requirements for being listed as part of the TCH family on the home page is that you put some variation of "hosted by TCH" on the page. I don't have any of my websites listed in the family pages (I host 4 sites with TCH), so none of my sites has the "hosted by TCH" link. So, yeah, they are just happy customers! Welcome to the family, netmasterbill. I hope you join us. This is a great hosting company, and these forums are great support! You won't find anyplace better or cheaper!!
  20. The fastest answer to this question would come if you opened a Help desk ticket. Best of luck!!
  21. I have read in a couple of places about an awstats vulnerability; Here is one such instance (of three different ones I have come across in the last week): So my questions are: how do we know if we have the latest awstats code? In general, is this something that we can update ourselves or do we have to wait for cPanel to release an update? How do we know if our stats are "locked out from the rest of the world?" I'm not trying to be a panic merchant. I'm just wanting to make sure I'm not perpetuating some security risk because I haven't done something to my server that I ought to. (Chances are, all is probably well, and I need not worry! )
  22. Thanks all (especially Thomas) for the update!
  23. All phpBB users should be aware of a new version of phpBB which was released today. The newest version is 2.0.16. This release addresses some bugfixes and one critical security issue. More information can be found in the phpBB forums: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=302011 As a reminder, TCH encourages all of us to keep our software installations up to date, so those of us running phpBB should probably upgrade as soon as possible.
  24. As I've been looking clicking on the awstats link on the main page of cPanel, I've noticed that my awstats doesn't seem to be showing the activity that is happening in my subdomains. Is that the expected behavior? I know that I can view the stats of individual subdomains by clicking on the link under subdomain maintenance, but I am looking for the aggregate statistics of my complete site. Can I change awstats to show the activity in my main folder and in my subdomains too? Thanks,
  25. I used iframes on my brother's website homepage because he wanted to be able to add content easily when he made changes. It was really easy to send him to the news.html file and just add his content where he wanted. He didn't have to search past the long header and table elements and image elements in his index.html file. Since he was intimidated by editing the index.html file, I made the news.html file and added it as an iframe to his main page. He is less afraid of editing the news.html file, and if he breaks it, he doesn't break the whole index.html page. Maybe not be best overall solution, but it works for him right now.
