scotttyz Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Well I am down to the short list of possible new webhosts (2 now). Have heard great things about TCH so here goes: 1) Use of PHP mail() scripts. Are there any restrictions? My scrips are either in a password protected (.htaccess) section or have the domain name hard coded into the "to:" section. The other host is currently yanking many (some very secure) on the fly, with some pissed customers. 2) any restrictions on using php classes to work with files? I am using Htaccess.class.php3 to edit a user.file (like .htpasswd) via a webpage. 3) Any file restrictions? .exe files? (for download) 4) dedicated IP's? 5) can we limit ftp access with different ftp usernames? 6) What is your biggest fault? (got to be one out there) signed, very angry at current host (lol) Quote
HCSuperStores Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Hi there! You should match features and compare prices. But know this ... these guys know their stuff and take care of their customers. I've been to 5 or 6 hosting companies, most paying more than what I am here. By FAR the best service around. I've been looking for these guys since '99! Good luck in your search ... I'm sure you'd be happy to try them out for the 30 day trial period and make a decision based on that. Take care, Bill Quote
scotttyz Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 Hiho Bill, Ya I gather these guys (and gals) are serious. That is why I am down to 2 from about 30 I was looking at. and FWIW I could care less about $50 bucks a year, even $75. I am looking for service. Most every host that was "inexpensive" did not make the cut. Quote
scotttyz Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 one more question. We seem to email a few .exe files a year that are already compressed. Is there a way to disable the .exe blocking on email? Quote
HCSuperStores Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Let me give you something to think about then ... On your short list, do the other guys put their server stats up for the world to see? You can see, for all of their almost 60 servers, how much down time there has been. What about these forums? Would the other guys allow you to post what ever was on your mind? There not hiding anything. It's out there for the world to see and examine. That's honesty! Quote
HCSuperStores Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 I'm not a Tech ... just a customer. But I believe that some people rename their .exe files ... like .ex_ just to get through the filter. Quote
Head Guru Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Welcome to TCH. From the top.. 1) Use of PHP mail() scripts. Are there any restrictions? My scrips are either in a password protected (.htaccess) section or have the domain name hard coded into the "to:" section. The other host is currently yanking many (some very secure) on the fly, with some pissed customers. We do not restrict the use of any script on our servers (except one blog called greymatter). PHP Mail scripts are no longer offered in cPanel as a autosetup script, however you can do what you like with your account as long as it is legal. 2) any restrictions on using php classes to work with files? I am using Htaccess.class.php3 to edit a user.file (like .htpasswd) via a webpage. SAFE_MODE is off. So you should be ok. 3) Any file restrictions? .exe files? (for download) We dont monitor or restrict file usage. However, all files must be legal and in accordance with our Terms Of Service and Acceptable Use Policy. 4) dedicated IP's? With justification. Must follow ARIN rules. 5) can we limit ftp access with different ftp usernames? Yep you sure can. Unlimited users in fact! 6) What is your biggest fault? (got to be one out there) Let the userbase answer that one. Good luck in your search for a new host. Quote
scotttyz Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 Yes the "other guy" does hence the knowledge about some pissed customers about have their pearl/php mailto: scripts being taken down on the fly. One last question (ya right): If a file on my server (even just outside public_html) is chmod'd to 777 would other site on my server be able to get access?? Quote
Head Guru Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 We are not open to removing the .exe email filters. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 I'm not 100% on all of your questions, but I'll answer the ones I do know. and find out an answer for the others. 1) Use of PHP mail() scripts. Are there any restrictions? My scrips are either in a password protected (.htaccess) section or have the domain name hard coded into the "to:" section. The other host is currently yanking many (some very secure) on the fly, with some pissed customers. As long as the scripts dont get exploited there shouldnt be a problem, we will shut a site down without warning if scripts do get exploited. 2) any restrictions on using php classes to work with files? I am using Htaccess.class.php3 to edit a user.file (like .htpasswd) via a webpage. I'll get back to you on that one 3) Any file restrictions? .exe files? (for download) Only if it is illegal, if we find copyrited material, programs, MP3's etc on your site you'll be asked to remove it, if it isnt removed the site would be terminated. 4) dedicated IP's? Not without a valid need for them, like for an SSL cert 5) can we limit ftp access with different ftp usernames? You can restrict access for ftp accounts 6) What is your biggest fault? (got to be one out there) I spend to much time at the computer Is there a way to disable the .exe blocking on email? Nope Quote
MikeJ Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 If a file on my server (even just outside public_html) is chmod'd to 777 would other site on my server be able to get access?? Yes, assuming the directory also allows access, but they would have to know your account name (TCH uses somewhat cryptic account names on creation) and that you are on the same server (home directory by default is not "listable" by regular accounts). Quote
scotttyz Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 ThinkI might have narrowed the list to 1 Been a pain in the rear weekend. I have heard problems with the following from another i was looking at: If a file on my server (even just outside public_html) is chmod'd to 777 would other sites on my server be able to get access?? I guess it depends on apache set up or something. Not a hosting guru myself, lmao Quote
taznumber1 Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 I am sure you could zip the exe file up and send it via email if it is small enough Quote
HCSuperStores Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 You'll not regret your choice scottyz! Let us know when you have actually signed up ... we'll give you the official TCH welcome! Quote
scotttyz Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 thanks HCSS, Just got to get my bosses arse on the phone in the AM. Quote
ThumpAZ Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Scotttyz, PRE-Welcome to the Family! One of the things to take into account is the Zero Tolerance SPAM policy for your email lists (one complaint gets you in trouble, but Head Guru is fair). Also, for the exe's, most of the email clients as of late automatically block them anyway. As do MANY of the virus protection softwares, even if they are inside a zip file. Your best bet is to rename the file ext with instructions to rename it upon receipt. I gotta say, the folks areound here are stern on their policies, but extremely fair. They will give you the rope to play with, but you have to tie the knot to hang yourself. Quote
scotttyz Posted March 1, 2004 Author Posted March 1, 2004 Thanks for the heads up Glen. We acually have no list. Only 1 email is sent upon sign up to our password protected site, but the user has to be added one of our (total of 10) employees thru a .htaccess protected page. None of it is public. signed ------ waiting for my email with user name and password -------- PS SO happy to be here!!! Quote
