Virtual Imager Posted October 21, 2003 Posted October 21, 2003 Is there a way to remove or block those pesky promotional signatures that appear at the end of emails when you use certin free web-based services like hotmail or yahoo? Quote
TCH-JimE Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 Hi, No, they are placed in the email after you have sent it. If you want to foward the email on, you can remove it by converting the email to normal txt and removing it that way Jim Quote
Deverill Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 That, my friend, is why the email services are free. The advertising you provide them is "paying" for your email service. As Jim said, it is added after it leaves your hands so there's nothing you can do about it. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 Yes http://ordering.yahoo.com/or/ypm/splash?85...pop&.osig=zQwKT Quote
DarqFlare Posted October 22, 2003 Posted October 22, 2003 Why don't you just use the email with your TCH account? Heck, sometimes I have Outlook automatically add a signature from my OMGN addresses for promotional purposes, hehe... Quote
Virtual Imager Posted October 23, 2003 Author Posted October 23, 2003 I do.... but I added hotbar to my Outlook. I like the backgrounds, emoticons, graphics, etc... I just don't like the promo it adds to my outgoing mail. I guess I'll have to upgrade to the Premium service to get rid of them. Quote
Deverill Posted October 23, 2003 Posted October 23, 2003 Be aware that Hotbar is what's called spyware and is reported to track you web browsing habits and has also caused some problems with Outlook and XP. It does way more than it advertises and is very difficult to remove. You can read more about it by going to google and typing "hotbar spyware" as a search term. Quote
Virtual Imager Posted October 24, 2003 Author Posted October 24, 2003 It does way more than it advertises and is very difficult to remove. Thanks Jim. I followed the directions for uninstalling that I found at hotbar's helpdesk (http://hotbar.com/helpdesk/faq/faq.asp). It didn't seem difficult to remove. Are you saying that it's still on my machine doing it's spy stuff? Should I do something more? Bad hotbar! Bad! Bad! And bad me for installing it... I feel like I've been taken. Thanks for the heads up.... Rock Sign Quote
Deverill Posted October 24, 2003 Posted October 24, 2003 Yeah, according to all I read it is still in there doing bad things. I use a program called "Spybot Search & Destroy" that gets rid of all kinds of spyware very nicely. I'll bet it will pick up some stuff if you run it (it's free but donations are requested). You can get it at spybot.eon.net.au/index.php?lang=en&page=news if you'd like to give it a spin. We recently had an office at the company where I work that their entire computer sub-network ground to a screeching halt. Come to find out, they are a bunch of WWW-Playbabies and had gotten so much spyware and "cutsie programs" on their systems that they were unusable. We're making that our case study for the new acceptable use policy. Quote
DarqFlare Posted October 24, 2003 Posted October 24, 2003 Spybot is great. Yeah, I know about removing spyware. My fiancee's workplace gets some from time to time, and I'm called in to remove it. It's easy money, since they pay me $20/hr for technical/computer work I do in there. Boy is it nice to know a little about everything! Quote
vendlus Posted October 25, 2003 Posted October 25, 2003 Ad-Aware works for removing hotbar as well. I don't know if it gets everything, but I ran it on a friend's machine a couple of days ago and it found a slew of hotbar entries. - Vendlus Quote
