I have both website.com and a website.org domain names that I want to point to the same site. Is this possible?

Thanks

I know it's possible :) I'm not a tech, hopefully one will come around soon and give you details, but I do know it IS possible :)

Will, three pieces to the puzzle:

1. First you create your web site

2. You need to select a web provider to host (store) your web site. Let's say you initially choose Tripod. When you do, they'll tell you that you can access your web site with a URL such as:

www.members.tripod.com/server4/~william

Pretty long and ugly, doncha think?

3. So then you ask: can I register www.william.com and have it point (redirect) people to my site at www.members.tripod.com/server4/~william ?

Answer: you betcha you can!

Not only that, but if you wish, you could also register www.william.org or www.william.net, and have them also point to your site. But why stop there? You could also decide to register www.will-and-grace.com or www.willywonka.net.

Get the point? Think of a domain name (mysite.com or mysite.org) as nothing more than a nickname. Your real name may be William Joseph Smith, Jr - but everyone just calls you Will.

Same way, your web site may be at www.members.tripod.com/server4/~william - but everyone can get there by using www.william.com or www.william.org.

How do they do it? Is it magic? No, not really. When you register a domain name (like www.william.com), you simply inform them at the time of registering the web provider it should point or link to. This is the purpose of the 'nameserver'.

AFAIK, there's no limits on the number of actual domains that you register.

Finally, let's say you get your site up and running on Tripod, and then decide to switch and have your site hosted here on TotalChoice Hosting instead.

What do you do? Simply:

1. Sign up with TCH

2. Republish your web site to TCH

3. Contact whoever you used to initially register your various domain names (www.will-and-grace.com, etc) and have them redirect all those domain names from Tripod to TCH. Then within 24-72 hours whenever someone types in www.william.org, they will be redirected to your web site now located at TCH.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info.

In all those words it is Yes, just point both the .org and the .com nameservers to the one ip address.

Hi Will,

The thing we are talking about is commonly called “domain parking”. But you also have to instruct TCH to accept queries for your .org domain. If you host website.com at TCH (or somewhere else) and then change the nameservers for website.org to point to TCH nameservers, they will not respond to DNS queries for your .org domain. Even more, the web server will not know that your .org site is the same as .com one. So before rushing to make the change at your registrar, be sure to get all the information from TCH support.

Kind regards,

just X

Let's say you have www.site.com hosted by tch. The site is up and running. Then you have www.site2.com, just as the domain name but no site. Can you get www.site2.com to redirect or point to www.site.com without actually having a site?

Also is this part of the basic hosting plan if you can or is an extra fee.

Hi,

Buy the domain name. Start a help ticket explaining you want a domain parked. Then you may edit your nameservers for the domain name.

What could be simiplier?

Any department will do. As has been mentioned, you can set up the nameservers with your registrar to point here and then request that we park the new domain and we'll get it set up pretty quickly.

I just bought two new domains and had them parked on my current site. Really simple Thumbs Up but I'm curious about email. When the DNS propagates and the sites start to work, will I have any email access thru the new domain names?

Yes, you will be able to add accounts using those domains in the cPanel of your main account. You can also set up a default address for them as well.
