One of the people who has access to the Cpanel uploaded several files directly onto the server. They now all end with .xls The problem is we are having trouble downloading back off the server. They are all Excel Doc. Any suggestions?

I went there and it said:

cPanel System Backup is not enabled on this machine. Some other type of backup system may be in place, however downloads cannot be fetched using this module.

How do I enable that?

I would use an FTP client to download them. There are several good free ones. I use Core FTP and Fillezilla. SmartFTP is a favorite of Mitch and several other folks as well. It provides many more features than File Manager and uses the same log in information.

Glad that worked. Filezilla is a nice program. It's the one I use for my own stuff. I use CoreFTP for testing things on the Help Desk. Both are nice and will let you change permissions on files, delete files, and even synchronize files between your local and remote directories.

The other alternative here is to simply enter the exact file name into your browser address bar (provided the files were loaded into /public_html directory somewhere).

Example:

That should start a "Open or Save" dialog. Notice that the file name IS case sensitive and file names with spaces are a bit more troublesome.

(But FTP is a faster protocol for this, so it is preferred.)
