Hi there,

I'm planning on signing up for a TCH account and transferring my existing domain over, along with the contents of the Mysql database currently in use.

I've read some of the information items on your website and the one concerning domain transfers says that I have to instruct my current host to change the Name Servers for my site to the details given to me at point of account activation.

Do Nameservers also affect email, or is there something else I'll need to do the make sure any new emails get delivered to the TCH servers instead of my current host?

I've never transferred a domain before. I ordered my dcurrent domain through my current host and have never had cause to move it anywhere else.

I also understand that you offer a facility to 'hide' my true name and address on my whois record, while not taking ownership of my domain and not interfering with any renewal requests. I'm a bit wary of my real details being available to anyone who knows where to look, but at the same time I dont want to cause my domain to lapse because no-one knows where to send the bills... Can someone please expand on how this works, and how I can organise it on my account once created?

Thanks,

Hello,

From my memory:

1) In changing your domain name servers, the MX zone is updated where your "where to send email" is kept. Thus, by changing your nameservers, your email is automatically updated for you. Note that nameserver changes can take upto 72 hours (not TCH fault, thats the average time for a domain name change) so don't panic if your domain name is still looking the wrong way.

2) The WHOIS part, your records are with held only from the public, all records are still kept private so they know who to send emails too etc.

Welcome to the forums Robmonster

When I did it my email and everything transferred.

You don't have to contact your current host to make the DNS change if you have access to your damain nameservers. You can change them yourself. Depends on who you purchased the domain through and how they have set it up.

Here you have full control over your domain server names.

Thanks for all the welcomes :)

Can someone tell me the difference between transferring my domain to TCH, and just updating the nameservers for the domain in my current hosts control panel? Like I said, I've never had to do this before so dont want to do something wrong. Whats the typical procedure?

Also, can someone from TCH expand on how the whois hiding works, how I order it and how much it is?

Ta muchly,

OK, so there are two options. First is just logging in to your domain control panel where you registered your domain name and goign to the name server section and changing your name servers to what would show in your welcome letter. This keeps your domain at the registrar you are at now. No biggie unless you are paying more than $11 a year for your domain itself.

If you transfer your domain here as well as get hosting then you would go to our domain transfer page and follow the instructions. The transfer is $10.95 and extends your domains expiration another year beyond its current expiration date.

Private registration (WhoIS hiding) is $9.00 a year and basically what it does is mask your personal information from WhoIS searches and helps eliminate spam and keeps your personal details like name and address and such from being found.

Welcome RobMonster...

About the privacy option. I just set up one and that particular one gives you an yourdomainname.com@theirdomainname.com email address and then they forward everything to an address of your choosing. That way when the notice that your domain is about to expire comes through you actually get it.

In answer to another of your questions, Robmonster, you should note that Private Registration (WhoIs hiding) just hides your information from outside users. If you use TCH as your registrar, TCH will still know where you are, and can still contact you when your domain requires renewal.

You will still be required to provide valid identifying information (name, address, e-mail), but WhoIs hiding just keeps that information from becoming publicly accessible.

Thanks a lot for this info!

Is it ok to sign up for hosting first to test the site via IP and then transfer the domain over later if appropriate? Is it just as easy to transfer a domain away from TCH in case I need to move again in future?

Hi,

Yes, you can test using the IP as a temporary measure before moving the domain name over. Please not though, that some scripts do not work properly when not using a domain name.

Yes, it's easy enough to transfer the domain name to another registrar.
