I test installed SMF today to see how difficult it is to install and to see if I would encounter any errors. The install went smoothly and I had no errors at all. Here's how I installed it.

  1. Downloaded the .tar archive from simplemachines.org
  2. Created a folder in my webspace to hold the forum. If I wanted it as a subdomain I would have created a subdomain in cpanel instead of creating the folder (as cpanel will create the folder for you when you create a subdomain)
  3. FTP'd the .tar archive to the folder created in step 2.
  4. Opened File Manager in cpanel, selected the .tar archive and then extract from the menu on the right.
  5. Created a database through MySQL in cpanel.
  6. Created a user and password for the database.
  7. Added user to database.
  8. Pointed my browser to http://my-TCHDomain.ext/folder-created/install.php
  9. Entered my FTP password (cpanel password) all other fields were already set
  10. Followed the prompts filling in the required fields as necessary. When it came to the datebase name, database user, and password. Created an admin account and password when prompted. Checked the delete install.php file when prompted.

Install successful. It's not hard to do, just need to pay attention to what you enter in the database/user and password fields. The database and user are prefaced with your cpanelname_ and the password is just that, the password.

EDIT (SECURITY TIP)

After you complete the installation open up an FTP program and look at your directory structure for SMF. You should make sure that the folders inside the folder you installed to are not set to drwxrwxrwx (777). If they are you should change those folders to drwxr-xr-x (755). Leaving them at 777 is opening you up to a potential hack job. You should also change the permissions of the Settings.php file to 755 so it doesn't get changed inadvertently.

If you are going to allow attachments you can leave that one at 777. If you are going to allow people to upload their own avatars you can leave that one at 777. But the other folders Packages, Smileys, Sources and Themes should not be 777.

ftp password-cPanel password? (hitting head on desk) I can't find my password for that. I know, I will use the info email for that. I also downloaded the program Don mentioned. I have a little book with passwords, but those for both of my domains seem to be missing. (more sighs, cursing my red dye over blonde brain  )

Thank you very much for the feedback. :D I am a bit nervous, just learning php and all of that.

Question? I have the info I found in a TCH forum for redirecting mySQL connection so that the passwords and such isn't in public_html folder for security purposes. Where would that be changed or placed, if you know what tutorial I am talking about. I think it was called "How to set up your mySQL connection". I want to do this right. It sounds a bit I AM A SPAMMER, but I do not want to compromise the security of the site, files, etc.

See my trouble started after the install, it went great for me, less then 5 minutes, but when I went to

admin>manage board>add board (or modify board) that is where I got the errors.. Did you try that, and if not could you?

Thanks

The password to access the database is the password you created for the user that you added to the database and not your cpanel-password.

Great idea to move it with scripting help.

Thank you for the input. I sometimes get a bit literal with my questions. I will attempt this in the next few days and see what I get. Tuesday is my time at the torch, so it will have to happen before or after that. I will not give up my time for mangling hot glass. :D

It should go fine. I will make a custom theme too. They have some great tutorials for doing that.

Thanks to you, Bruce, it went smooth and quick. I did not have the problem Jayson had. I did have some graphics I was trying to upload to a theme that were denied permission. Support looked at them, fixed it all up.. cool. We do not know what happened for them to go screwy, it all ended well.

I do not know about the "nuke" part of the path, Jayson. I am not using that software, is it? It sounds like somewhere a path got messed up? I would of uninstalled the whole thing and get a fresh upload of the program and tried it again. I am stubborn.

So far, we haven't uploaded files for certain parts. No time with the "Sillydays" season.

I hope you got things going.

thanks again for all of your help,

Well, I've never installed PHPNuke so that may be the problem your having but I'm sure you should be able to get it working with the proper path information.

I thought I meantioned I had trouble with simple machine, PHPnuke went off with out a hitch.

I liked SMF it was a small program

Posted

Jayson, if you're attempting to integrate SMF with phpnuke, that may be what is causing you problems. Have you tried just a plain install of SMF, not integrating with phpnuke? If so, I apologise. I remember seeing on the SMF forums an article about integrating with CMS', perhaps you could have a look at that and see if there's anything there that you missed. Personally, I don't use a CMS so I can't be of much help to you there.

Ok, I will explain this again, I do a straight install of SMF, it installs fine no problem, the problem begins after the install. I try to add more boards and that is where I run into the problem, I can have someone ( a TCH-???) person only, do the install to see the error I get. ( to see if they get the same error I get) but I know that the TCH personal are extreamy busy. So I can not impose upon them this problem

Congratulations, the installation process is complete!

If at any time you need support, or SMF fails to work properly, please remember that help is available if you need it.

Click here to delete this install.php file now. (doesn't work on all servers.)

Now you can see your newly installed forum and begin to use it. You should first make sure you are logged in, after which you will be able to access the administration center.

Very strange indeed.

Go into the admin panel and select server settings.

What do you have for these three settings?

Forum URL http://www.your-TCH-domain.ext/forum

SMF Directory /home/your-cpanel-name/public_html/forum

Sources Directory /home/your-cpanel-name/public_html/forum/Sources

That's what they should be

my settings

Forum URL http://www.jaysarahandy.com/forum

SMF Directory /home/jaysarah/public_html/forum

Sources Directory /home/jaysarah/public_html/forum/Sources

I am just going to have to accept that it just will not work for me, I am doing this for a school, so after they look at it (if/when it works for me) they will be getting thier own site and then go to do this all over again.

I've ammended the first post in this thread with a security tip. SMF when installed sets the Attachments, Avatars, Packages, Smileys and Themes folder to 777 permissions. It also sets the Settings.php file to 777 permissions. You should change all of these to 755 permissions to keep your installation safe from attack (hacking).

I've had no problem with this forum except for one thing. Whenever someone logs in, they are taken to my website's index page. If they go back and try again, then they're taken to the forums.

This seems like a really strange glitch. Any ideas??

I would recommend checking (in the admin section "Edit Server Settings") to ensure the "Forum URL" and "SMF Directory" settings are correct. Also, make sure the "cookie name" is valid. Let us know if this helps any.

Upgrading to the latest version seems to have stopped it bouncing to my home page - at least for me and hubby, but now I can't stay logged in. Whenever I browse away, I have to sign in again, even though I choose to stay logged in forever, and have the cookie set for some obscenely high amount of time.

The few things I found on their site didn't seem to apply or help. Any ideas? :)

Thanks!

The default in SMF is to keep you logged in "forever" (unless you change that yourself).

Posted

I belong to another forum that uses SMF and I always stay logged in there. I asked the webmaster about her settings and she has hers the same as I have mine, so I'm not sure where else to look. I click Forever when I log in, but obviously their definition of forever is different than mine. :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a present surprise this morning, in my e-mail was a message from the Fantastico team letting us know that as of last night SMF can now be auto-installed by their product. "Fantastico is the leading autoinstaller for CPanel servers with more than 13,000 installations, accessible by more than 1 million webmasters." If your host supports CPanel and has Fantastico installed, you should now be able to install SMF with only a few clicks. If your host does not support Fantastico, you should let them know about it and the fact that many providers give it to hosts for free. Once again, we’d like to thank the Fantastico team for their great product and choosing to include SMF with it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TCH should do this, SMF is totally superior to phpbb.

Edit: TCH-Bruce - Link removed as it contained links to other hosting providers. TCH is aware of Fantastico and has discussed using it but there are no plans at this time to do so.

Thanks, I will.

It would be interesting to see the number of tickets per year divided by the number of installations.

Based on my reading of their boards, it seems the majority of trouble comes from the people who overmodify it!

We'll see what happens (if I can install it, anyone can!)

Houston we have a problem we need your help to solve...

The reason I chose SMF was the spellcheck feature. After signup for a new domain

and plowing through, I'm quite disturbed to find that the thing I thought was a

feature of the application is something that TCH needs to install apparently.

I get this error message:

Enable spell checking. You MUST have the pspell library installed on your server

and your PHP configuration set up to use the pspell library. Your server DOES

NOT appear to have this set up.

I'd strongly urge to you please consider installing this ASAP as I now

understand that this would solve the e-mail spellcheck problem as well. :P

There are more and more tools using spellcheck every day, to run a professional web site - this is basically mandatory for me to compete with my peer sites. :pissed:

Posted

Open a help desk ticket about the spell check. I don't know if they will install it or not but the mods don't have access to the servers or your account.

They may refuse to install the spell check as it would put more load on the server then necessary. There are plenty of browser plugins that allow for spell checking. isSpell for Internet Explorer and Spellbound for Firefox are two that I know of since I use both.

Posted

Bruce,

I've submitted the help desk ticket as per your request.

Your idea might work for the 2% of power users in the world that might use this FROM THE HOME and in reality it amounts to a kluge. However, the majority of my visitors will be visiting from corprorations where modifying anything in their browser nowadays gets people fired on a daily basis - so this solution, besides being too high maintenance for some simpleton site visitors - is simply not practical. For this reason and because I want to run a top notch site, this feature simply must be installed.

I can understand not installing Fantastico - that affects my ability to do a one install - fine skip it. However, a server configuration limitation that doesn't allow me to have all visitors use a popular and necessary feature of a popular software program - that one I must be insistent upon as it affects the overall functionality and public perception of my site. Thank you.

What you have to remember here is that you are on a SHARED server. The decisions that TCH makes are for the good of everybody.

If every single person who hosts with TCH demanded specific server setups or specific components be installed, overall productivity of ALL sites would diminish

There are limitations on what you can do on a shared server. That is simply a fact of shared hosting life. In that sense, you get what you pay for. (Actually, at TCH you are getting much more than what you pay for, but that is beside the point.)

If you want to compete with the "big dogs" in your target segment, then you may eventually have to consider a solution like a semi-dedicated server or a dedicated server. Yeah, they don't come at four bucks a month. But for four bucks a month, you're already getting a great bang. If you have specific requirements for your hosting so that you can "run a top notch site", and if those requirements can't be met on a shared server, then you need to look at options that let you upgrade to a server, where if you choose to have software that lowers your overall site performance, it won't affect the other users on the server.

I, for one, am glad that TCH watches out for EVERYBODY on the shared server. Many additional software packages that have been proposed by TCH customers are simply so resource intensive, that everybody's site suffers. Thank you Head Guru Bill and the TCH staff who work so hard to keep my site productive and working well.
