Guest nickeldime Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Hi, I've been searching for some time now for a new host and TCH looks like a great place. With the price, I have no problems trying it out. But, before I open a new account (anywhere), I have a question about my current domain. My current domain is hosted by company X, but the domain is registered and managed by company Y. The DNS info at company Y is using Compnay X's DNS (thus they host my domain). I need to leave company X ASAP. Here's the problem. I can not even get through to company X, so I can't even tell them to close the account and remove my domain info from their DNS as well as the MX record. Will this be a problem? If I open an account here at TCH and just update the DNS info for my domain at company Y to use TCH's DNS server, will that be the end of it? Thanks in advance! Quote
Larry Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Should be no problems.. All you have to do is get the registar (domain registration co) to point your domain to the new NS's.. "If I open an account here at TCH and just update the DNS info for my domain at company Y to use TCH's DNS server, will that be the end of it?" Yes. that would be the end of it Quote
SEO Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Company X should not matter. Go to Company Y (your registrar) and update your DNS pointers to the appropriate new servers (after you open an account here, you will get a welcome email explaining this). I've been searching for some time now for a new host and TCH looks like a great place. It is! Quote
TCH-Rick Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 You've got it correct. Once your account is set up on our servers we will send you a welcome email with information on your nameservers, IP address, and much more. You can then update your nameservers with the registrar of your domain using the Total Choice Hosting nameservers. Propagation takes from 24 to 72 hours generally (sometimes more and sometimes less.) Let us know if you need further assistance. Quote
Guest nickeldime Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 awesome response time Thanks to all who took the time to reply. I had thought that would be the case, but was not sure. Looks good. Now to decide which plan Quote
Guest nickeldime Posted May 17, 2003 Posted May 17, 2003 well, I've opened an account couple of days ago. Everything went quite smooth and no complaints. But, after I've changed the NS to TCH's server, I'm seeing some strange stuff. Maybe it's normal? Not sure and that is why I'm here I updated the NS to TCH at least 36 hours ago. I noticed that I was getting emails through TCH's pop3 server and when I setup the same email on my laptop, it would not log in. So, playing around, I noticed this: When I ping my www.domain.com, it still comes back with the old IP, but if I ping it again, it is TCH's IP, BUT, only every other time I ping! Strange?!? This is also the case if I ping mail.domain.com...every other time, I get TCH's IP back. Is this something to be alarmed about at the moment or just wait it out another day or 2? Quote
Head Guru Posted May 17, 2003 Posted May 17, 2003 Your ISP's DNS is running between live updated server and a cached server. I like to refer to it as flip flopping.. This is 100% normal and you should not be concerned. Just allow is more time to propagate fully. I think it will work out for you. Quote
Guest nickeldime Posted May 17, 2003 Posted May 17, 2003 Again, awesome response time and thanks again! Quote
TCH-Rick Posted May 17, 2003 Posted May 17, 2003 If it really bothers you to have the flip-flopping you can try setting an entry in your HOSTS file pointing to your new ip. That solved my problem when I switched hosts and I actually put in my old ip once to get some files off the old host that I had forgotten. You can do a google search on HOSTS for more info. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted May 18, 2003 Posted May 18, 2003 Hi, Domains take upto 72hrs to propergate through the net. At this point, all the major name servers that every single ISP in the world refers too will be updated and pointing to your new domain. What may take a few hours more is the resetting of your ISPs cache. 99% are good, its just the odd 1% who fail to update there cache for a bit. Have no fear, your site is running just fine Jim Quote
KevinW Posted May 18, 2003 Posted May 18, 2003 NickelDime -- just to add a "real time experience": When I finally was ready to move my site from DellHost to TCH a couple of months ago, everything moved, and all the DNS propogated within about 3 days as expected. Everyone could see my site --- EXCEPT FOR ME!!! With the help of Ricky and others, we determined that my ISP provider (Verizon) actually have 4 DNS servers, and two of the four had updated (propogated) my web site correctly, but the other two were still pointing to my old site -- even a week later! I contacted Verizon, and they said "Oh, no, all our DNS servers are up to date". I then sent then "proof" that showed them otherwise. Within an hour, it was all working! But do you think Verizon would even say thanks? -kw Quote
