Hi there. I have a simple cartoon dollz site hosted on fateback.com. It's free and no ads or stupid pop-ups and all but they've been going down a lot lately and now I can't get into my file manager because they're "maintaining" it. I figure at four bucks a month, TCH is pretty affordable but I've only ever been hosted for free (geocities, homestead, and now fateback). I've never exceeded my space amounts and TCH offers a LOT more than the free ones, so that's not a concern. And I've never seen my friend Manda's (faerygrrl.com) site go down so I figure this place is pretty reliable.

But I've never tried to pay for my own domain or hosting before so I had a few questions:

Signing up for a year means 12 months, not just whenever through December, right? (I figure yes, but you can never be too sure).

How long is the 12 month for the price of 11 deal going to keep on because I probably won't be able to sign up until the second half of April...

Since you can have subdomains, is it okay to host a friend so long as we don't exceed our limits? And how do they sign in?

Do you NEED ftp? I've never used it.

Can you host your own guestbook or small message board so long as, again, you don't exceed the limits?

And finally, how easy is it to upgrade? Do you just pay the difference or do you have to pay again for the whole new account?

Sorry if these seem like stupid question but I'm a little nervous about the whole thing. :D

Thanks. :)

Let me see if I can help a bit.

12 months is 12 months, April to April.

I can not answer how long the 12 for 11 will last.

As I understand it you can not point a separate domain name to a sub domain.

You dont need FTP but I find it easiest and its not hard to figure out.

You gan have your own guestbook and board or you can use he ones that come with your CPanel.

I think you pay the difference but I cant be 100%.

Did I miss anything TCH?

Good answers, thank you. :)

About the subdomains though, I meant that I was wondering if I could host someone like on monedolls.com/guest or guest.monedolls.com...but they would actually manage their own site. I dunno if you can do that...I've seen other people do that though...not with this host as far as I know.

Hi,

If you mean that you have your own site at www.mysite.com but then give your friend yourfriendsite.mysite.com then I think this goes againest TCH agreements as it has two owners (and hence need a reseller account!) but you would need a proper answer from a staff member for that. You certaintley could not point a different domain name to it.

Absolutely not as this is explicity laid out in the Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy as a no-no. Can't do it. Sorry. (For $4/mo. the friend can get their own account. :) )

Critical Mass is right on all counts. The 11 for 12 deal can end at any time and can also be picked back up at any time.

The easiest time to upgrade is at the end of your term...so if you have paid through April 3, then request the upgrade to your account for April 3. Then there is no prorated question of what's due to whom. If you pay annual, upfront, then you will be asked to provide the difference at the time of upgrade for the same term period (annual).

That makes sense, thanks. You're right though, at four bucks a month pretty much anyone can afford a website...I dunno what I was thinking. And no set up fee...I love that.

Thanks so much for your answers.

One other thing. I got an e-mail today and I'm not even signed up as a hostee...am I on the mailing list now?

Umm...some new feature or something. I deleted it and I don't really remember because it didn't concern me... ...sorry.

Well, what about this:

I was thinking about moving my noleftturns.com account here. It's a collection of my friends blogs. One installation of Movable Type, but 4 different blogs. noleftturns.com/vincent noleftturns.com/gina noleftturns.com/dan and noleftturns.com/marshall

Would this go against your policy? I REALLY dont want to split this up, since the idea is that it's a collection of friend's weblogs.
