snipe Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 I don't know if this is directly related to the upgrade I just did or not, but.... I just used the apache upgrade script, and I also upgraded php to 4.3.9. That seemed to go okay, but the server was running slow. I rebooted the machine, and now it won't come up at all, via FTP, SSH or http.... Anyone have any suggestions (other than opening a trouble ticket...) Quote
snipe Posted October 22, 2004 Author Posted October 22, 2004 Feh. Now its back up. I hate computers. Quote
TCH-Andy Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 Hi Snipe, For a second you had me wondering which of our servers was down, as no alarms had gone off.... Then I remembered you had a dedicated unmanaged server.... I'm just wondering if we should start a forum page for dedicated server support? what do you think? In terms of the problem this time - seems like it just took a while, it was just slow to wake up this morning This can be due to a number of reasons, and without a lot more information, impossible to say in hindsight - sorry. snipe Posted October 22, 2004 Author Posted October 22, 2004 I think a forum for dedicated servers would be most excellent - IF enough of the techs were onhand to actually help with it of course. I usually wind up trying to find the answers on my own, or I go to my local irc channel for my LUG. I remember from talking to Bill a while back that you don't have a ton of dedicated unmanaged clients, so I can understand if a whole forum for it isn't accepted as a good idea. But I know it would sure help me out. Most of the forums here are intended for vhosted clients, so just finding basic cpanel scripts, etc can be a real hassle. (For example, the script to manually call cpanel to do a backup, etc.) I always feel badly for opening a trouble ticket when I'm not sure what the problem is. I have an unmanaged server, so I don't like asking the techs to do things that *I* should be doing. If we had a place where dopes like me could exchange experiences and learn along the way, that would be awesome. And you could have some stickies that describe common cpanel scripts and stuff like that. (If you need any help gathering any of the info, I am happy to help. I have a ton of bookmarks now related to cpanel and WHM... lol) Quote
Head Guru Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 It can be rough going alone on some of these server issues. Snipe, you should never feel bad about sending in a support ticket. We are here to help you, although you are on a unmanaged server. Please feel free to send in a ticket ANY time you feel the need to do so. I promise we will not get upset and call you silly names Bill Quote
Virtual Imager Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 I remember from talking to Bill a while back that you don't have a ton of dedicated unmanaged clients, No, but they sure have a ton of dedicated unmanageable clients! Quote
MikeJ Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 In addition to helping TCH out, I also have a dedicated server with them, so if there's enough interest in a dedicated server forum (the bigger issue is I don't think many dedicated server customers use these forums), and TCH ok's a dedicated server forum, I'd have no problem being the acting mod/sponsor for it. It could be a more appropriate place for system level information that doesn't pertain to shared customers. Quote
snipe Posted October 22, 2004 Author Posted October 22, 2004 I promise we will not get upset and call you silly names At least not to my face, right? woooot woooot woooot LOL I *do* appreciate that Bill Its that kind of openness and support that made me pick TCH in the first place. That said, I don't *mind* doing most of the maintenance by myself - and I don't want to bother your techies if its something I should be able to do myself - since I'm not paying you to manage the server. I used to syadmin (among many other things) a few years back - my problem is largely that I'm out of practice for the day to day stuff. Even then, the problems I usually have are cpanel/WHM related - not "normal" linux admin stuff. Its these funky scripts and dependencies that keep biting me on the tooshy! I usually figure it out eventually. But a forum for dedicated server folks might still be kinda spiffy! Quote
snipe Posted October 22, 2004 Author Posted October 22, 2004 It could be a more appropriate place for system level information that doesn't pertain to shared customers. I totally agree - it would be nice to have a place where its understood that this is a dedicated area, I have root access, etc etc. I always feel kinda lost where to post those questions now Quote
snipe Posted October 22, 2004 Author Posted October 22, 2004 In addition to helping TCH out, I also have a dedicated server with them So you're saying that you're not only the Hair Club for Men president, you're also a client? Quote
TCH-Rob Posted October 22, 2004 Posted October 22, 2004 He is THE client. With all that monkey hair he uses much of the available resources. Quote
