Invision: Moved Directory, No Longer Accessible
Singer posted a topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Oops...it looks like I may have done something wrong with my Invision forums. They've been running well for the month I've had them installed, nicely surviving an upgrade to 1.2 beta 2 a week ago or so. Here's what I did: In the interest of shortening the directory path to my Invision forums, I renamed the directory from "membersbulletinboard" to "forums" using CPanel's File Manager. I removed my subdomain for it and created a new one, "forums", redirecting it to the new directory name. I tried to access the forum via the subdomain...IE would not return after a minute or so, before I stopped waiting. I then tried to access the forum using the subdirectory instead of the subdomain name...same thing. I renamed the directory back. When I try to access the directory, I get an immediate "404 File not found error". Checking my error log, there's something really funny showing up: it's looking for the subdirectory "forums" even though I specified the subdirectory "membersbulletinboard" in the URL. Any thoughts? Thanks! -
Invision: Simple Way Of Notifying Of Bb Change?
Singer replied to Singer's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
It's basically a human process issue. It's the step before logging into the board (which, I agree, they just need to stay logged into it): some people are adverse to spending the few seconds required to open their web browser and getting to the board in the first place to check to see if there are messages. Yup - I have an "executive" group set up already. -
Invision: Simple Way Of Notifying Of Bb Change?

Some background... We're a volunteer-run choir. Currently, our executive (of which I'm a part) holds discussions by e-mail using our "exec" e-mail list address. This works reasonably well, but we do get e-mail floods at times. I recently set up Invision on our site, with the hope of having the bulletin board replace our e-mail discussions. It provides much better historical tracking and separates topics much better than e-mail lists do. However, when I put forth my initial attempts at trying to convert people, some commented that it would be too much work. The major concern was that, after connecting to the Internet, they would have to go to the board to see if there were any new messages. People aren't willing to spend this extra time. It requires a little bit more up-front time with potentially large time savings down the road as people try to keep track of a topic. Also, this provides a much better way of transitioning to a new executive and it has the potential of letting those choir members that would like to, to participate in the discussions by the executive. In other words, it can bring more democracy to the organization and flatten some of the hierarchy. Good solid background reasons but they don't answer the "I need to save time this very second!" comment. I've been looking through the bulletin board to see if there is any way of doing the following things, with no luck. I've also installed version 1.2 BETA 2, hoping it might have the additional capabilities I seek - no luck. And I've checked through some of the mods for it at ibplanet.com - no luck! (Haven't checked ibplanet's bulletin board yet - it has a rather LARGE number of posts.) The question... It's possible for users to track individual topics. However, as far as I can tell, they have to request the topic tracking and it is by individual topic. So, the questions: Is there a way for the administrator to enable topic tracking for all topics for a user, so the user doesn't have to do anything? If the administrator can't do it, can the user do it? Can it be set so that only a single message would be sent to the user for any number of changes on the board since the last time they were there? Can this message include a link that would take the user to the search results that are generated when the user clicks on View New Posts? Or...people have talked about phpbb. Does that or another bb do something like this? I have this funny feeling I may be looking at adding a modification to ibplanet's mod database, if it's possible. I don't ask for a lot... Thanks! -
Thanks, Lianna, for mentioning AVG and your experience with it. I'm currently using Norton AntiVirus quite successfully on my W2K machine, but I do make recommendations to friends and I'll have to renew (or not ) my subscription someday. This looks very interesting. I went out and checked AVG's web site. Regarding your comment they note about AVG 6.0 Free Edition:

As I was out and about on the web yesterday, at one time I was at the web site of a product that is used at TCH. I did notice a comment about a new release coming out on June 15. Maybe? (If this is it and HG is trying to keep it a surprise, I don't want to divulge anymore!)

Up front...gripe gripe gripe... I'll have to admit I'm not too enamoured with the new look. I find the new graphics for the PM, E-Mail, Add Reply, etc. buttons hard to read, and I'm not fond of the colour scheme ( Yuck! ). On the reply editing page, the new large icons, as Raul commented, take up a wee bit more space than I would like. I have a large screen, so it's a only nuisance for me... That said, I've been very ( Thumbs Up ) happy with the content of the bulletin board over the past month that I've been a steady reader, and thanks to everyone for their comments - very useful! I've been able to find a lot of answers without having to ask questions. ...gripe over...

The Invision forum is quite easy to set up and to use, and it's free. If you haven't done so already, it might be worthwhile starting off with a Search here in TotalChoice's bulletin board for "Invision". There's been a fair bit of discussion and might give you some background. To set it up, do the following: 1. In your CPanel main page, click on "Addon Scripts" in the "CGI Scripts" box. 2. On the page that's displayed, click on InvisionBoard. 3. In the InvisionBoard Setup page that's displayed, type in your admin user id and admin password. You choose these. 4. Specify the URL where you want it installed. They note that it must be at your top level directory, and they provide an example using your domain name. Click on the "Install" button. 5. The bulletin board will be created. 6. To go to your bulletin board, specify the location of it as your web address. For instance, if you called it "london", specify www.ripthejacker.net/london. The empty bulletin board with a "Test" forum will be displayed. 7. Towards the top of the page you'll see "Welcome Guest ( Log In | Register )". Click on Log In and specify the administrator user id and password that you supplied during the install. From here on in, I'll leave you on your own... Good luck!

Yes, that is right: for Apache 1.3.27 (what's being run here) it must be .shtml. I had that problem a few months ago and after posting a trouble ticket, the folks here got me going in the right direction. If my memory serves me correctly, the explanation is that this improves server efficiency: Apache won't try to do SSI parsing on non-SHTML files. A note: when I first ran into this, I was running Apache 2.0.43 on my PC. Version 2.0.43 does support other extensions for SSI (I was using .inc), so I was completely befuddled for awhile until the folks here pointed out the impact of the version differences to me.

Rob, I'm not familiar with the Performance Monitor image you're showing. You noted in an earlier post you were running Windows 2000 on one of your machines. Is that Perf Mon image from Win2000? or, where can I get that performance monitor - what have I missed? Thanks.

I've been trying to create a database with no luck. In CPanel, I clicked on phpMyAdmin, causing the "Welcome to phpMyAdmin 2.4.0" screen to be displayed. I tried to create a new database by specifying <site user id>_schedule as the database name and clicking on the "Create" button. (My main web site user id is used instead of <site user id>.) The following message was displayed: ------------------ Database <site user id>_schedule running on localhost Error SQL-query : CREATE DATABASE `<site user id>_schedule` MySQL said: Access denied for user: '<site user id>@localhost' to database '<site user id>_schedule' ----------------------- Sigh! I currently have one database (agbook1), created automatically when I installed the advanced guestbook. I read the previous posts, taking those into account, but no luck. Any ideas?

I had been under the impression from a reply to a post I made about a month ago or so that streaming was only available on dedicated servers or somesuch. (My memory may be a little faulty.) Would someone be able to clarify this? If it is possible to stream on the non-dedicated accounts, what are the standard methods and protocols (I'm not familiar with them)? Thanks!

I just took a look at your page. I'm on a cable line, so I noticed no delays in the Flash presentation. However, when I tried to get to your home.htm page, there was about a one-minute (that's a guess) delay. When the home.htm page did display, it seems to have been complete with no errors. Unfortunately, I have no suggestions for improvement at this time.

Hmmm...I may be missing something, Boxturt. I set up a page with links using the following without success, getting a 404 error (the file is at the root of the public_hml directory): http://209.51.142.186/~csochoir/test.rm http://209.51.142.186/~csochoir/public_html/test.rm Any thoughts? P.S. I like your music! I took a trip out to your site and listened to some of it.

Good to hear! What do I need to enable the streaming capability? For instance, the other day, I used Real Audio's Helix Producer Basic 9 to create a multi-speed streaming file, but I don't know what I need to do in my web pages to let it stream for the user. After I uploaded the file, I tried to access it (simple <a>... </a> reference) and it started downloading, which I guess isn't too surprising.

What support do you have for streaming audio? I would like to put up some files (self-created and permission obtained!).
