  1. Whoa there Chief, why Linux, and how much does it cost? And I've been with Microsoft quite some time; can Linux do all the good stuff?
  2. YEp. Keyboard is what I think too. Glad to have the confirmations. Thanks guys. I will check on price of new keyboard. I'll bet that's a beaut to change out. thanks
  3. Hey ya'll, I hope this is the right forum for this: I have a dell 1100 inspiron, warranty expired, and when it boots it beeps about 24 times, stops and beeps for alot more than that. Funny thing is then it goes on to windows. ( xp home ) Now, no matter what icon you click it jumps to the last one at the bottom of the screen. Also if I try to type something in the run window, it scrolls through all the previous and stops at the bottom. I can get to and run programs from the start menu, but any time you want to pick something it jumps to the end. Almost like an arrow key or tab key was stuck. I hooked up a usb keyboard but get the same problem. The onboard keyboard stays functional so I am not sure maybe that keyboard is the problem; yet there's no way to disable it in setup. Dell says plugging in the external keyboard disables the onboard, but that is NOT what's happening. Can't seem to find a list of beep codes anywhere either. thanks for any help. mike
  4. Ok gang here it is: I called microsoft and they gave me a new product key. this allowed me to do a "repair install" , which I did. It now seems that the system is back on its feet and I lost no data. You KNOW how much the wifey loves me now don't you?? Thanks for all the help guys. :tchrocks:
  5. ok, so has anyone heard of a dos-based product key finder? Can't seem to find one. keyfinder.exe works .........from windows. heh heh. not from recovery console mode. ( the wife or I apparantly lost the key )
  6. whoa dobbin. I tried the "no password", ( just hit enter ), and I got to the prompt. Now I can try to figure out what's going on. Glad I tried that again, or ...... did I before. ( heh heh ) thanks Ali, I will let you all know .
  7. Yes, I tried entering no password but it didn't like that either. I think Madman is right. And I imagine a clean install is the only way ??
  8. Yes, I tried that madman, but unfortunately it wanted the administrator password, and though it's been awhile I don't recall ever setting one. So, I tried admin, and the ones I commonly use and got, of course, kicked out. Is there a default by microsoft, if you don't set it??
  9. HI. My wifes pc just up and won't go to windows. It goes to the "options" of whether to choose normal, safe, and boot to last good configuration but no matter which one we try it only comes back to the same page. I am now running Spinrite on it , which will take all night. Has anyone had this happen?

    Hard Drive

Yes, I agree with Bob on the Virus thing too. I have been real busy, in and out, as I am now; but I don't recall seeing that EZ-Bios thing come up, David. So when I get back I think I will try again from square one with a newer fdisk? But I think you are right about the old bios not being able to handle that drive. In the words of ol' governor Swartz...... I'll be back.

    Hard Drive

HEH HEH. Yep it got the right capacity, loaded windows, then corrupted windows. I reloaded twice with same results. ( a regular soap opery ain't she ? ) So I love the challenge and think maybe I will look for a dos based program to look for maybe a boot virus or a corrupted MBR???? I'll keep you posted. heh heh. We did win round one.

    Hard Drive

Gentlemen, we have ignition. A huge thanks for all the help to Bruce, Cajunman, Steve, and especially Madman, Don, and David. Thanks for all your help guys. I used the dos WD disk, and created the boot. It booted the machine ok and set up virtual drives etc then got to the point where it said " cannot setup screen display please remove disks and reboot. It looked as though it wasn't going to allow full capacity to the disk, but I went ahead and loaded 98. It loaded fine and now the 120 gig hdrive SAYS SO. THANKS A MILLION YOU GUYS. If you ever get to Nebraska we'll " husk some corn together ". Thanks, Mike

    Hard Drive

Thanks, David. I made the disk and ran it. It got to the WD splash screen and setup everything until it got to the video. Said it couldn't set up screen resolution and told me to remove all disks and reboot. Then I am back where I started. I have to leave for about 5 hrs now but will try again when I return. thanks. That should have worked. I was real hopeful.

    Hard Drive

That's what I was hoping for , Steve, but the partition only gets to 48,935 and 98 won't install.

    Hard Drive

    yep.
  16. mike

    Hard Drive

Yep, that's the one I downloaded, Don, but it won't run on dos prompt, says it needs win32. This is after I have partitioned, at 48,935, and booting up with a 98 startup disk. Then I switch to the cd drive and try to run it. But it needs win32. Wonder why they call it a dos download then?
  17. mike

    Hard Drive

Well, Don I downloaded a dos version of the driver install but it just says it needs win32 to run I will look into that partition magic thing though. thanks

    Hard Drive

Ok here's where I am: The owner doesn't have the disk so I downloaded from western digital. The windows download, of course won't work, because I am only at the partition stage. The dos download won't work because it requires win32. So I am at the point where partition only sets it up at 48,935 megabyte so I can't load windows 98. so I seem to be stuck at the low partition and unable to get the harddrive large enough to load windows. I put in a new ata raid controller but have no way to make the pc see any different because it needs to be in windows to load the raid drivers. Any suggestions?
  19. Hey fellow TCH ers how are you? Question: I am putting a 120 gig western digital hard drive in an old 266 mhz Gateway. Fdisk reports only about 48 gigabyte for total partition size. Anybody know how to deal with that? Is there a jumper setting? thanks in advance.

I agree. Just follow the advice of the TCH group and wait for the spiders to crawl.

Thanks, Jim, and the rest of you. I ALREADY knew that this is my mosted trusted forum. I came to the same conclusions I am reading here and I never buy from the phone anyway. But the good of it is that I am diving head first into this seo thing and see what happens. Getting much good advice right here in my home court. Thanks guys.

Howdy. I was approached today by phone from a lady representing Internetadvancement.com Anybody ever hear of them? Is paying big bucks for SEO the right way to go? If so, Anybody have any experience with who to pay for those services without taking a beating? thanks. I just trust the TCH folks and that's a fact from experience. mike
