shiva ... check out www.positivefusion.com ... they are a little more expensive ... but they allow 3 addon domains, and you can buy more. unfortauntely their other features aren't as wide open (i.e. you have a limited count of e-mail addy's ... but it's something like 250) their server is super fast and support is great. i have an account with them as well. I'm starting to like this place better with the exception of no addon domains. if addon domains were offered here i wouldn't go anywhere else. my .02

cpanel is one of those things that is easily learned just by playing with it. if you have any specific questions about the different options just post it and someone here can explain what it is/does

ok it was easier than I thought ... basically in your robots.txt make entries for each robot you want to filter for and include what areas they are or are not allowed to scan... so >User-agent: * Disallow: / would stop robots from scanning your entire site. >User-agent: * Disallow: /inc Disallow: /secretfolder would stop all robots from indexing the 2 listed paths. prertty cool ... think I'll have to try that.

you can do this with META tags ... i just read something about this recently .. lemme see if i can find it again... ok ... found some stuff. there are two ways ... META tags and robots.txt file for meta tags ... put a tag: ><meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"> this tells search engines not to index your page and not to follow links to index other pages. good info on that is here. this robots.txt thing I'm not too familiar with ... from what I understand you place a file robots.txt in your webserver root and search engines will check it for instructions on what to and what not to index. little bit of info here. hth

i don't know if this is the right place for this ... does anyone know of a way to sync an address book from a pda or outlook with the horde webmail calendar? I saw horde can import/export CSV files ... anyone know of a way to automate this? jake

froot loops (you could then go with fruit ... then strawberry ... then milkshake ... but let's not go there as that's what started all this craziness )

thought you guys might want an opinion from someone other than a TCH employee (considering they're a little biased)... i signed up about a week or two ago and have been VERY impressed. Let's put it this way ... I use another hosting company for another site i manage and i absolutely loved that host. super fast, the guy is very personable, and support questions are usually answered within 10 minutes ... well as hard as it is to believe, i'm growing more fond of TCH than I am of that other host i love so much. both are amazing but this place is just fantastic. thatguy ... if you are even a little unhappy with your other host. switch ... you'll thank yourself later. bigshew, one of the gurus can answer some of your qs better but for what it's worth: 1. if you have access to your domain through whoever it is registered to (i.e. register.com or godaddy.com) you can point it to your TCH account free. just change the name servers to the ones TCH give you. Or i understand these guys can do it for you for a charge. 2. if you're good with MySQL, again you can move it for free and have it exatally how it was before. otherwise these guys can do it gor you given a few bucks and some stipulations (i think) 3. to give you an idea ... my account was setup within about 30 minutes. i payed with paypal. also ... i moved my site over myself and it took me all of about an hour. most of that was waiting for my files to download from my old host (it's slow) and installing Movable Type on this side. hope this helps ...

For anyone who is good with CSS ... I'm building my newest website and IE has me stumped. I'm seeing some of the strangest things I've ever seen. If some of you have some time please have a look and see if you can figure out what's causing the issues. Like I said I'm having issues in IE ... mozilla, opera, and all the STANDARDS complient browsers are just fine. So if you have both installed you can check these pages in a standards complient browser to see how it should look. PAGE: http://www.jackshakes.com/weblog.php ISSUE: I am using the H2 tag for the date header of my blog. Notice the first date header (currently Oct 11) is not formatted like the others. The color and size are ok but IE is not showing the top and bottom border. However, it does show it for all the rest of the dates. These are created via movable type so the same code is generated for each code block. PAGE: http://archives.jackshakes.com/ ISSUE: On this page ... both 'weblog' and 'the g-files' should be surrounded in a box with a darker grey background. Hovering over them should change the backgroudn to a lighter grey. Again, works fine in Mozilla ... but IE effs it all up. I think that's it for now ... the style sheet these pages use is here ... which internally links to this style. Thanks for the input ... now for a short rant ... I'm so absolutely sick of microsoft and their "we can do whatever we want and the vast majority of the general public will swear it's the best product around". Microsoft ... the company who has the gal to throttle downloads coming from microsoft.com so that people using IE can download files faster. I've seen it muself ... started a download with mozilla ... was downloading at about 20kbps ... started a download of the same file on the same PC with IE and was pulling 90kbps. this is the same company who not too long ago would display a much less content rich website on msn.com to opera users ... and then had the gal to say it was because of certain 'standards' other browsers don't conform to ... even though opera probably has the most extensive list of W3 standards it conforms to. Even still, let's take M$s word for it ... Open opera, tell it to lie to the webserver and claim it is IE (which only changes what it reports itself as, it still interperets the page the same) ... and magically the REAL msn.com is displayed... amazing. (M$ still does this a little today .. checkout ms.com in IE and in a standards browser and you'll notice some subtle differences) and let's not forget IE is singlehandedly (sp) holding back the use of PNGs ... that amazing image type that has an alpha layer to allow us to achieve TRUE transparancy ... yeah, well everyone supports it EXCEPT IE... how nice of them. sure it's better than the days of having to test coding on 5 different browsers and platforms .. now we're down to about two (MSIE and everyone else) ... but it absolutely chaffs me that we finally get to a point to where a community is writing good, solid web standards, and pompos bastards like bill gates think they are too good to comply. i urinate on microsoft and all it stands for. ok ... enough of that ... thanks all for any help ..

borfast ... what server are you on?

if it helps any i just shelled into my acct and wasn't able to execute ncftpput ... I've never used that util so I'm taking your word for it that that's what it's called. I also did a whereis ncftpput and came up with nothing ... is it a possibility that this util is on some servers but not others? I'm on server 40 and I don't know about the comments thing ... sorry ... I would like to know the answer to that tho because I have the same problems trying to restore DBs with --- as comment identifiers

thought I'd just add text captions to save a little server space... "Steve Dave poses at the marker commemorating his first confirmed UFC sighting (Unidentified Flying Cattle)" "The beef industry's response to Chick-Fil-A's anti-cow advertisements." "Caution: Depressed Cows Ahead" "Caution: Cow-Lemming cross-breeding facility ahead" "Unable to find a human volunteer for their 'right-to-die' statement, heavy metal band 'Hell on Earth' turned to a cow suffering from mad cow disease." "Failed Chick-Fil-A marketing campaign #3" "After this sign was posted, the herd never tested Farmer Red's 'No mooing after 4pm' policy again" good lord that first one is cheesy ... but it had to be said

your problem is exactally what my previous post was talking about. the actual image on the ccat_main.html page is 2048x1536 and the file size is rather huge (i'm guessing over a meg as my browser is only downloading a quarter of theimage and it's 300kb) the image tag in the HTMl is making this image display at 266x199 ... but the browser still has to download the entire larger image before it can display the image at the smaller size. the solution is to resize the original image to however big you want it to be when it's shown on the page. The filesize for an image this size should be around 10k or less. remember, just because you tell the image tag to display the image at a certain size, it doesn't make the image that size ... the image doesn't change. there's nothing wrong with total choice, nothing wrong with the bandwidth, and nothing wrong with your code (other than being sloppy) ... everything is acting as it would be expected to considering you've put a one meg image in your webpage.

i'm wondering the same thing but can't find an answer on the forums ... do i have to create a 'spam account' for every e-mail account I want spambox to forward spam for? or does one /spam account take care of it all? jake

another thing to remember with images and web pages is ... the actual size of the image should be equal to the size it will be when displayed. a lot of novice web designers will take a picture from their digital camera, that has a resolution of 1024x768 ... then insert an image tag that sizes it down to 640x480 or something. When you use the image tag to resize your images, the browser must still download the entire larger image and then resizes it locally. So if you want a image to show up as 300x200 on the screen ... make the source image 300x200, thereby making the filesize smaller, and they load quicker. just to get your bearings ... a typical jpg coming off a digital camera can be about 1 meg ... an ideal image size for the web is 10k-100k ... oh, and it helps if you're viewing the page on something faster than a 28.8 modem connection.

thanks for the input. I don't have any specific packages in mind, but i wanted to make sure that if I ever have the need it will at least be considered. i'm not crazy about paying for shell access but I understand your stance on security and can appreciate that. I ended up signing up for an account last night and so far i'm impressed with the speed of the servers and love the management tools (cpanel rocks). now i just have to wait for dns to update so i can get off my old provider

Do customers get shell access via Telnet or SSH? Also, what is the policy for having additional software packages loaded if needed? (i.e. perl or php extensions) looking to move my site and i'm a bit skeptical. I'm moving from a crappy hosting company paying $15 a month, I have one I really like for another site that is about $25 a month for a similar plan ... and here this place is boasting $5 a month, and i haven't read any complaints ... blowing my mind.
