The password to access the database is the password you created for the user that you added to the database and not your cpanel-password.

I test installed SMF today to see how difficult it is to install and to see if I would encounter any errors. The install went smoothly and I had no errors at all. Here's how I installed it. Downloaded the .tar archive from simplemachines.org Created a folder in my webspace to hold the forum. If I wanted it as a subdomain I would have created a subdomain in cpanel instead of creating the folder (as cpanel will create the folder for you when you create a subdomain) FTP'd the .tar archive to the folder created in step 2. Opened File Manager in cpanel, selected the .tar archive and then extract from the menu on the right. Created a database through MySQL in cpanel. Created a user and password for the database. Added user to database. Pointed my browser to http://my-TCHDomain.ext/folder-created/install.php Entered my FTP password (cpanel password) all other fields were already set Followed the prompts filling in the required fields as necessary. When it came to the datebase name, database user, and password. Created an admin account and password when prompted. Checked the delete install.php file when prompted. Install successful. It's not hard to do, just need to pay attention to what you enter in the database/user and password fields. The database and user are prefaced with your cpanelname_ and the password is just that, the password. EDIT (SECURITY TIP) After you complete the installation open up an FTP program and look at your directory structure for SMF. You should make sure that the folders inside the folder you installed to are not set to drwxrwxrwx (777). If they are you should change those folders to drwxr-xr-x (755). Leaving them at 777 is opening you up to a potential hack job. You should also change the permissions of the Settings.php file to 755 so it doesn't get changed inadvertently. If you are going to allow attachments you can leave that one at 777. If you are going to allow people to upload their own avatars you can leave that one at 777. But the other folders Packages, Smileys, Sources and Themes should not be 777.

You have several options to help stop Guestbook spam. Make sure you are rinning the latest verison of the Guestbook. Install a captcha (image verification) before accepting a comment. Upgrade to Lazarus Guestbook.

To connect to any DB you create it would be: host: localhost dbname: cpanelname_database-you-created dbuser: cpanelname_user-you-created AND added to the database-you-created password: password-you-created Hope that helps

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I don't run MT anymore I've switched to Wordpress so I can't offer an answer to that. Maybe some of our other MT users will respond.

I just tried it and the comments load instantly. I even went back through the archives and brought up comments instantly.

Not sure why you are plugging and unplugging your network cable. Maybe you have laptop. Could be time to consider a wireless card and router.
