  1. But aren't alternative browsers inherently safer since most of IE's weaknesses center around ActiveX, which other browsers don't support? No matter how many security patches Microsoft releases, ActiveX can still destroy your system or steal your data. The only way to prevent it from potentially harming you is to disable ActiveX, thereby limiting IE's functionality. Then there's the Browser Helper Object extension which has unrestricted freedom to download, run, and install programs or applets without your permission or knowledge.
  2. I use Firefox 99% of the time. I used to be an Opera user but believe Firefox is faster and more stable, and seems to be able to handle some sites that make Opera die. The only time I use Explorer is when testing web pages or doing my online banking.
  3. On my primary machine I dual boot into either XP Pro or Mandrake 10, which is to me the fastest Linux distro I have ever run, and I've tried just about every major one from SuSE to Lindows. My other machine dual boots XP Home or Xandros 2.0, which is a nice distro for the noob. And I must admit Crossover Office is the "killer" Linux app. Seeing the famous IE window floating on my Xandros desktop was a surreal experience.
  4. Because the average PC user has been so dumbed down by Microsoft Windows. That's not meant as a slam. Anyone who's been around home PCs since the days of DOS can remember back then when you actually had to *know* a little to accomplish some things. We didn't have wizards to install software and hardware or to help us troubleshoot problem PCs. MS revolutionized the home computing world but in the process created a world full of people who have no idea of the inherent dangers in a machine connected to the Internet, or if they do have no idea how to help themselves. Most average users I know are absolutely scared to death they'll "break something" if they attempt to install software or troubleshoot their machine on their own. I don't mind because I make plenty of pocket money doing the most basic maintenance for people. The sad thing is, when I try to instruct them as to how to perform certain chores themselves, they don't want to learn.
  5. Did it via control panel. Also noted my forum doesn't show up in the upgrade list for phpbb, either.... also installed via control panel. Someone had a ball with my guestbook... put an obscenity in the boilerplate text for the automated mail sent out when someone posts.
  6. My guestbook doesn't show up in the "upgrade" drop down list for some reason.
  7. I hope you enjoy all the spyware that "free" version of Incredimail stuck on your system.
  8. When checking mail at work I use the client built into OS X. At home I use Pocomail. Handling spam - I let Spamassassin take care of it for me. It catches 99% of the junk, and I just need to filter on the ****SPAM**** subject line to send it all to the trash folder.
  9. I registered the Bat and used it for about two years, but grew frustrated with the rather slow pace of development. This in itself wasn't enough to make me drop it, but as I added more email accounts it became rather cumbersome, since the Bat does not put emails from all accounts into a common inbox. So, I had over a dozen accounts in the account tree, each with their own folder groups. Also, although the program has some of the best mail filtering I've ever used, again it became cumbersome since each account has its own set of filter rules. There's no way to implement a common ruleset for all accounts, although newer builds allow you to "copy and paste" filters from one account to another. Still not an ideal method, though. Another sore point for some users is its rather weak html support. v2.0 improves both rendering and the native html editor, but it's still got a long way to go. I still maintain an unofficial support forum for Bat users - Click here. It's a good place to read things both pro and con about the program. (Ritlabs' "official" Bat support forum suddenly vanished after being deployed with much fanfare late last year) Currently I use Pocomail. Its filtering is excellent - among other things you can selectively strip html from incoming messages, and it has Bayesian filtering built in to catch more spam. You can also turn off images and scripting in the preview so as to avoid web bugs and other baddies.
  10. 602 Office Suite is an excellent freebie from software602.com. You might want to try it if you're looking for an alternative to MS Office.
  11. Congratulations from a Wordperfect and OpenOffice fan.
  12. woooot I have never heard of such a huge increase, and I've been with over a dozen hosting companies over the years. Hats off to TCH. Rock Sign
  13. Try http://www.formsite.com. You design the form online, they host the script that makes it work, and then you get either a link to the form or the code to insert into your own page. It's free.
  14. Best bet is to stay away from the proprietary stuff. NOF and Dreamweaver are both great WYSIWYG editors and you can get by without the other stuff they try to throw at you.
  15. Netobjects Fusion will run under any version of Windoze from 98x to XP. Read about it here.
  16. I'm a Wild West reseller and they do offer web hosting plans. The screen shots I saw were virtually identical to my screens, since your reseller site is provided by WWD. All the reseller provides is a header graphic for the top of the page. It looks to me like someone is passing their reseller site off as TCH.
  17. I'm desiring to upgrade to a reseller account, and Cust. Svc. told me the evening of 4/20 they would provide a Paypal link so I can pay for the upgrade. It's been 24 hours and I haven't heard anything yet. I've had a ticket open on this since I first inquired on Monday 4/19 about a reseller account. Is this the norm, and is the delay in getting the Paypal link? This was something I needed to get set up quickly because I have a client site that needs to go live ASAP.
  18. Mailblocks.com offers a challenge-response mail handling system if you'd care to check them out. Their rates are very reasonable - you can get a 5MB mailbox for free, a 15MB box for $9.95/yr or 100MB for $24.95/yr. You can access with your regular POP or IMAP client if you wish, and have Mailblocks check and collect mail from any other POP accounts you may have.
  19. Any tool that will work only with IE sucks, in my opinion.
  20. or something to that effect. It's very annoying and I can't remember what I did before this started happening (and I'm finally getting around to doing something about it). I opened up the task manager while the error was still there and found out the process running is vbsystem35.exe. It's under my c:\Winnt\system32\ folder so I don't want to just delete it. What is it? Can I delete it? Can I un-install it? What gives??? Heeellppp! ! ! thanks, !!blue A Google search shows no mention of a Windows file by that name, only a few newsgroup posts that discuss a problem similar to yours. I don't think it's a problem with Windows; you may have downloaded some type of malware or virus.
  21. Please add me to your family page. DonZeigler.com DonZeigler.com Mothman, rock and roll, Linux, humor, more I have a link to TCH on all pages, right under the navbar.
  22. I've been on numerous hosting services and browsed many a support forum on these. This is only the second time in my six years of having a site up that I have seen the host turn away business so as not to adversely affect his existing customers. TCH is to be commended.
  23. They will take my Big Mac when they pry my cold dead fingers from it.
  24. I've been nothing but satisfied since coming to Total Choice. There have been a few snafus here and there with my account but overall their service is excellent. After some bad experiences with Hostdime and Eryxma, TCH is like a breath of fresh air. Rock Sign
