erika4u Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 The most unfortunate thing just happened to me. I received an e-mail with an attachment that contained a virus. The e-mail was sent to me via my website link. Fortunately, Norton Anti-virus was able to quarantine the virus in time before anything malicious happened to my computer. Since I deleted the e-mail so quickly, I forgot to write the sender name down. My question for you is this, is there anything I need to report to TCH regarding this? Thanks for your help. natimage Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Hi, I'm not sure if there is anything you should report to TCH or not...or anything that you can report since the email is deleted. A couple of things I would recommend though...if you are using "mailto:" in you form, look for some alternative scripts. There are some secure ones out there that would allow visitors to upload files and email you without using their own email client. Then you would have the ability to restrict the types of files they could send to you, thereby lessening the chances of a virus being sent. If that's not an option...or if you already use something like that and a virus got through anyway, you should maybe check the email source to get more info. on the sender. You could then possibly block that ip from sending you email at all...and TCH might be able to look further into it and report the sender. Be glad you had Norton running!!!! erika4u Posted January 27, 2004 Author Posted January 27, 2004 Thank you for your replies and welcoming me to your FAMILY :hug: This is the first time this has happened to me and when I looked through other forum messages, I couldn't find any information about what to do to report a problem (or if I even had to report it). In the past, the SPAM eliminator has been very effective for notifying me of possible SPAM messages, but this is the first virus e-mail I have received. Something to be aware of though, the subject was TEST with an attachment file.htm which was supposedly a screen saver file. I must be more careful in the future before I open attachments. That is a valuable lesson learned. I don't have a form on the website, just a hyperlink with my e-mail address. Should this happen again in the future, I'll be sure to get more information before I delete the message. Hopefully this won't be a continuing problem. The forums have been a very valuable tool for me to find information and help me gain knowledge since I'm a newbie to website creation and design. I'm in the process of building another website for our family recreational cabin and will be signing another site on with TCH. Thanks again for all you do for your FAMILY, I'm sure you sometimes may feel like you have a thankless job, but rest assured, all of us newbies appreciate everything you do for us. Erika Quote

I haven't made use of any of those suggestions, but it might give you a place to start. From reading different conversations, it's a bit risky to have a "mailto" link on your site. Since then I've cleaned out the system, running the anti-virus daily if need be. But I still get at least 6 or more emails at a time that are either "from" my domain (Spoofed email) or going to some account that doesn't exist on the domain. Downright Annoying !! Anywhos.. I never ever open any attachments anymore without being 100% sure of what they are. I've been through a big reformatting due to a virus and I NEVER want to do that again! Unfortunately, some of my cousins and a couple of friends never seem to learn after being told repeatedly not to launch attachments without checking first, so I'll be eternally doomed to getting viruses from them.
