Questions About Hosting Plans.

I sent this to sales via email, but I had another question, so figured I would post it here as well....

 

I'm currently with another provider who, well, isn't very responsive. So I'm looking at new hosts. I had some questions that I could not seem to answer by using your web site (though I found answers to many other questions).

 

- SSH: I see where SSH access may have been removed, at least from some sites. Is this the case? Is SSH access available with any hosting plans?

 

- Domain Name: I currently have a domain name (two, actually) on this other hosting service. At least initially, I'll probably change the DNS information and leave the domains there. Somewhat related: I'd like to know if it is possible to access the server without a domain name. Presumably by IP address? What I'm not clear on (and it may not matter all that much) is how the shared server determines where I'm headed if I just give it an IP address. Also related: Do you support having the domain at TCH, without a hosting package?

 

- Upgrading: Currently I'm looking at the lower-end plans, as I'd like to give things a trial run before really jumping in with both feet. Just some jitters because of my current company, you know? Anyway, I've read your page on upgrading, and it looks like you can move from monthly to another monthly easy enough, and monthly to annually easy enough. The question is what if I have an annual plan and want to move to another? Say I start at the starter and send in $44, then decide in three months that I'd like to move to the silver, how would the billing work out, and how would the credit for the remaining money on the starter plan be applied to the new plan?

 

- CGI: I'd assume that I have, or have access to, a dedicated CGI-BIN for my account. Is this correct?

 

- MySQL: I seem to recall that I saw that there was a single MySQL database allowed per account. Is this correct? If so, can you tell me how much it is for additional databases? Also, I'd assume the size limit is the size of the account - is that correct, or is there a different size limit for the database?

 

- CPanel versions: I noticed that the CPanel demo has a different verion number than my current hosting package providers (mine is higher). I notice you say there's not a problem moving from an earlier version to a newer one, is the reverse true as well? Speaking of which, is it possible for me to do the CPanel transfer? It's not that I don't trust you or anything... :0 I'd really just like to know how to do it so that I can gain the knowledge. Are all of the functions in your CPanel demo available in your CPanel? Or are there extra icons that won't be available on a TCH plan?

I'll try to answer these - someone jump in and smack me if I'm wrong.

 

I believe TCH will consider SSH on an as need basis and that it is a one-time $10 fee.

 

Yes you can access your domain via IP address eg: 123.45.67.89/~username

 

I cannot speak about the billing but it doesn't seem like a problem.

 

Cgi - yup - all yours

 

MySQL - unlimited, no size limit (that I know of, unless you start dragging down the server)

 

Cpanel is v8.5.3 so I don't think you would have a problem with a transfer.

We no longer offer SSH to any clients. Old clients are grandfathered in, but any new request, from old or new client will not granted.

 

Billing would cancel your old billing and prorate a refund back to you, then you would pay for the new annual plan.

Thanks for the quick replies. Couple of things that I don't think were answered (though I may have missed 'em):

 

- Domain Name: Do you support having the domain at TCH, without a hosting package?

I'm thinking the SSH icon is there, which obviously wouldn't be available. Also a Postgres icon, and I don't recall seeing that mentioned anywhere. Wondering if there are others.

While using the account without a domain is possible (you do have an IP address that is generally so that you can upload before propagation) it is not recommended. Many scripts will not work correctly, Stats programs will not work correctly, and other account functions work not work.

 

CPanel transfers cannot be done by the user, they must be done by us.

 

All functions in the CPanel demo are on our CPanel but some options are not functional on vitual accounts, i.e. SSH, parked or add-on domains, etc. Only yje options described in the plan options are functional.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm actually asking the opposite. Can I have a domain at TCH without a hosting account? For instance, I'm having trouble getting access to my domain to change the name servers. Would it be possible to transfer the domain to TCH without having a hosting account, at which point I would have access to the name servers or whatever else I wanted to update? Naturally, there would be a charge - I'm just wondering if it's possible at this point.

Sure you dont need a hosting account in order to purchase a domain.
