zasy99 Posted August 18, 2003 Posted August 18, 2003 Hi there, one of my primary reasons for wanting a host is so that I can send large e-mails without the size restrictions imposed by ISP's or these free e-mail account holders such as yahoo or hotmail. Can you tell me what is the maximum size that your SMTP mail servers allow messages with attachments to be, I may need to send messages of up to 60 or 70 MB at times although not often, thank, Chris. TCH-JimE Posted August 18, 2003 Posted August 18, 2003 (edited) Hi, Whilst there is no limit size, I will bring your attention to the following: I) Email eats up bandwidth, so each time you send a 60mb file, thats another 60mb added to your account. II) If your sending such large emails, surely FTP and downloads are better? III) If you are using the email to spam or pass on illegal files (including, but not restricted to warez, mp3s etc) then your account will be terminiated without warning. IV) If your emails start to clog up the mail server, and if your sending 60mb files at a time, this will clog it up, then again, your account will be terminated V) Some files are not passable via our email systems. zasy99 Posted August 18, 2003 Author Posted August 18, 2003 Thanks Jimuni, your points make sense and were expected. I just want to make sure that I can send that size if necessary, normally there is only 3 such mails a month at maximum, they would be legitimate files, mostly translated service manuals I do for our company, ftp or so would make more sense, you are correct however with the people I am dealing with it would just complicate matters, I would expect that you permit such files as .rar .zip and .pdf to be transmitted, executables and script files of course not. Thanks again. Quote
leezard Posted August 18, 2003 Posted August 18, 2003 .rar .zip and .pdf files will send with no problems, and you are correct executables and script files wont be sent, the main body of the message would go through but not the attached .exe file. Quote
Head Guru Posted August 18, 2003 Posted August 18, 2003 The big one - Most ISP's limit port25(send mail port) traffic sessions to 2mb. Quote

Thanks again. Bear this in mind. One of my clients had the similar situation, sending very large graphics files to vendors via email. So I set him up with a dandy quick system: FTP the graphic to his hosting account here at TotalChoice Web Hosting. Email to the vendor a direct link to the download file. Vendor gets the email and clicks on the link. IE/Netscape both would automatically ask if the file should be opened or saved. Include direction in the email for saving the file locally. It's a breeze. Pro's: No fighting it out with the ISPs and Hosting companies for those huge files to get transferred through the mail systems. (I have very few contacts that can receive files greater than 1 or 2 MB per email and most have a mailbox account limit of 10-25MB as a whole. Con's: There aren't any! Quote
zasy99 Posted August 19, 2003 Author Posted August 19, 2003 Right you are (all of you). This is a change, normally a question such as this would go unanswered on other forums, I actually got the answer I needed from Jim the other day yet you guys are still here coming up with helpfull ideas. Nice one! Thumbs Up Quote
Lianna Posted August 19, 2003 Posted August 19, 2003 Get used to it! Although we know it isn't typical of most hosting companies, we'd like to think it is the standard for our company... Welcome Home! Quote
