greatfolios sysop Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 This is going to sound cheap, but there is a reason.... As a part of my day job, I do custom systems controls for home theatre systems for a high end audio/video company. As a part of that job, I have a need for a basic laptop to interface with the customers control and "tweek" them. Up until now I have been using the ctx and it's been fine (slow but fine). Now our remote control provider has changed the software and hardware to the point where the ctx won't do it anymore. needs more memory, hd space and a usb port. I am not in a position to buy a new laptop now. Any suggestions? last thoughts. software won't run on win 95. (but I think w2k has too big a footprint on it's little 1 gig hd.) no usb port (I have been told that I can use the ps2 to usb adaptor). Let me know.... Mr. Bill Nerd Quote
btrfld Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 Will the software run on Win98SE? I personally think it's the last decent OS that Microsoft made. And I don't think it has nearly as large a footprint as W2K. Quote
AtomicVPp Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is a 'footprint'? Is it the minimum installation size? -Tim Quote
btrfld Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 When I say it, I mean the amount of Memory and Resources it occupies when it's running. Quote
greatfolios sysop Posted June 20, 2003 Author Posted June 20, 2003 Not sure about 98 (not a bad idea, but it calls for a load of dll files that aren't included in the 95 pac.... any other ideas? Quote
leezard Posted June 20, 2003 Posted June 20, 2003 only other idea i have is a bigger hard drive, more memory for your current laptop. I have my doubts about win2k running on that machine, and if it will it will be waaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy slow. Quote
Mav2u Posted July 7, 2003 Posted July 7, 2003 Have you thought about getting a refurbed slightly newer computer for under $500 from like Tiger Direct or Ubid. I know you don't want to spend anymore money but it is a thought. Mav Quote
greatfolios sysop Posted July 10, 2003 Author Posted July 10, 2003 ding dong the laptop is dead.... I killed it! I power it up and the lights light up but the screen never even blinks and the hd never spins. Hal... hello hal... are you still there? Quote
