queenpictoria Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Hello. I uninstalled MS Outlook and installed it again. I wasn't sure I was going to use it. Right now I need an email client and I have some apprehension about the alternatives. I know I don't want OE for a client. I suppose I can switch at some point, but I am afraid I am stuck on the namebrand of Microsoft. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Question 1: Does Windows XP Home have a copy of MS Outlook in it? That seems like a stupid question to me, but I really don't know. I got an OEM copy with my computer from Dell and there is no real manual that came with it. Question 2: I need to download some of my emails from my website domain. I have more than two separate emails that need to go into separate mail chutes. I went to cPanel and pressed the Auto-Configure switch on one of the emails. The darn thing won't open up. It says it has no reference on what is coming from where. ???? I think I need to set up the configuration manually. Is there a basic instruction list I can work from? I am not that experienced with setting up email configurations. I did it with Earthlink, but that was over a year ago, and I am on DSL now. My main concern is messing up my email or losing some of them in the learning process. Once I get it hooked up and learn how to work with it with more than one email, I can probably take it from there. One other question: In order for the different emails to go into the correct "folders" or whatever they are called, do I need to do filtering, or will the client and domain work with each one separately? Reality greatly appreciated, queenpictoria Quote
Head Guru Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 April, Don't use MS Outlook. In my view its garbage software and accounts for nearly 40% of all email help desk tickets. I would strongly suggest using another email client. I use a client called The Bat! by ritlabs. Everyone I have shown The Bat! to falls in love with it and never turns back. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Question #1 - Yes It actually comes with 2, Outlook and Outlook Express. For home use I would suggest you use Express. Question #2 - h_tp://support.microsoft.com/kb/171301 Other Question - Is answered in the above instructions. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Agrees on what Bill says about Outlook. However, I would recommend Thunderbird (It´s free). Also, on this page you´ll find a guide how to get started with it. Quote
abinidi Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 I'll also throw my hat into this one and support Thunderbird. It is Outlook-ish in its user interface, so if you are comfortable with Outlook, you should find Thunderbird very easy to use. And it's free. I love open source software. Head Guru---I'm going to have to check on The Bat! You've got my interete piqued. Quote
Head Guru Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 Paul, I have used the following email clients. Thunderbird Outlook 2000 Outlook Express PM Mail 20000 Eudora Pocomail Pegasus Mail Karen's E-Mailer II Courier Email Each one had its good and bad points. I have been using The Bat! for nearly 1.25 years now and I think it offers the best of all. For example... I pop 6 accounts and look at these stats: I have 28,670 emails in trash bin one I have 17,987 emails in trash bin two I have 69,987 emails in trash bin three I have 87,698 emails in trash bin four I process a TON of email. The bat! has been a perfect client. It's as fast as the first day I installed it and it have never crashed. It is virus proof and on and on and on. I dont back many products but The Bat! by ritlabs is one of the best software products I have ever used. http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/ Quote

I have installed it and am configuring it. I put in the first email that is parked on TCH. I put in a password and it comes up and says, "Username/Password Mismatch". So my question is: Does my password need to correspond to a password on TCH or on my cPanel? How do they hook up? Thanks, April Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 It should the password you assigned for that particular email address in the cpanels email section. Quote

So my question is: Does my password need to correspond to a password on TCH or on my cPanel? Don't forget that your username is a combination of your email box name, the + sign, and the domain name. So if your email address is me@example.com, your username is me+example.com. Hope that helps. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I can´t use my TCH settings to send emails since my isp blocks both ports 25 and 26 but as for my incoming email the username in thunderbird would be name@mytchdomain.ext. Quote
queenpictoria Posted February 23, 2006 Author Posted February 23, 2006 It should the password you assigned for that particular email address in the cpanels email section. Hello Thomas, Sometimes the people who write the instructions assume certain knowledge by the reader. I am still hunting down the password. I only use one or two, so I cannot be too far afield. Just to update, I am trying to open my Thunderbird email client. I have one account setup in there so far with my main email address. I try to download email, and I get the "username/password mismatch" window. I am working on discovering where I set up my password. I thought I had unwittingly deleted my Documents & Settings folder. It looks as though I did not. However, it is not obvious what I should do, even though some of the instructions say it is so. --- This page: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/p...words_help.html says: "Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences. Under the Privacy & Security category, choose Web Passwords. (If no subcategories are visible, double-click the category to expand the list.)" So I look in the Edit menu and there is no "preferences" in the drop-down list. I could go on with the instructions, but when this happens either I am very close, or way off. This is very humbling. I think I am going crazy. I also looked in my "Documents and Settings" file. I found no profile folder. I found files that I cannot read. There is a file called "profiles configuration settings", and this is all there is there: [General] StartWithLastProfile=1 [Profile0] Name=default IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/s4o0bfm2.default I don't understand this and I don't want to screw up my computer. I did use the password I use on the email inside the cPanel on TCH, and it did not work. Maybe there is no password set somewhere.?.?.? That tutorial just isn't simple enough for me. I'll do more work and let you know what happens. I don't give up so easy. It is a bit humbling because it appears that the information is all there, I just don't see it. Thanks, queenpictoria Quote
TCH-Andy Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 For the password of an email account in Thunderbird try; Tools -> Options Then select the Privacy icon at the top, and the "Passwords" tab. Then "View Saved Passwords" and you should see a list of accounts - probably only 1 as this is all you have set up. You can "Show Password" there, or you can remove it. If you remove it, thn it will prompt you for the password again next time you try and access your email account. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Hello With regards to question 1, Windows XP Home only comes with Outlook Express. "Outlook" full version comes only with Office Packages. I use thunderbird and love it. If it helps: Username: notrealemail@myaccount.com You can edit your password in cpanel section of email. Jimuni Quote

Also, on this page you´ll find a guide how to get started with it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello Thomas, It has been quite a while since I last approached this topic. I had messed up my Documents and Settings folder (at least that is what I believe) and could not know the correct password for downloading email from TCH's webmail. I have reformated my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP. I have installed both Firefox and Thunderbird. Everything ought to be in order to set up Thunderbird now, and it is the most recent updated version. I am looking forward to using it. I have a couple of questions: 1)Is the webmail POP3 or IMAP? 2)I came across the same screen asking for a password. I put in the TCH password and it did not work. I put in the TCH individual email password and it did not work. What password are they looking for. I know I am not an idiot but it is tempting to feel like one right now. Do you know which password they are looking for. They ask for a new password. I'm a bit confused. Perhaps you or someone can shed some light. Blinded by ignorance, queenpictoria Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 Number one someone elese will have to answer. 2. In thunderbird account settings, try: Server name: yourtchdomain.com User name: yourname@yourtchdomain.com The rest you can leave as they are I believe. Restart thunderbird. It should now ask for the password which is the same password that you assigned to yourname@yourtchdomain.com when you set up that emailaddress in cpanel. Quote
stevevan Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 (edited) 1)Is the webmail POP3 or IMAP? With POP3, a user can download and manage mail on a local machine. With IMAP, email stays on the server. Each has it's own advantages and disadvantages. If you check your email from different computers, then IMAP might be what you want. If you only use one computer, then POP3 would probably be your best choice. It just depends on how you are going to use email. Webmail, I believe (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), is IMAP. If you are going to use Thunderbird and always use the same computer to check email, I'd suggest using POP3...it's easier! Edited July 15, 2006 by stevevan Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 If you check your email from different computers, then IMAP might be what you want. This can be done either way. The issue is setup of the mail clients. You only configure one of the clients to remove the email from the server if you choose POP3. Quote

queenpictoria Posted July 18, 2006 Author Posted July 18, 2006 Set your outgoing SMTP server to your ISP. Hi Bruce. Thanks for your reply. When I use my ISP for my outgoing SMTP server, can I still have my domain email to be the one they reply to when they respond to an email. I am on Verizon for ISP. My email is on TCH: starrynight@my-domain.com I don't want anything on verizon to cloud things. Will the response email still be "starrynight@my-domain.com"? I guess I should know this, but I don't. Thanks for the clarity. I have Thunderbird set up to receive emails. Now I just need to know how I can send them through Thunderbird. Regards, queenpictoria EDIT: TCH-Bruce - I edited your email address to prevent spam robots from picking it up. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 You will have no problems. When people hit reply it will go to your domain email address. I do this all the time without issue. Quote

Hello again Bruce! I have been doing some homework and found out that my ISP does not block ports 25 or 26. Is there a way to use TCH settings to send emails and not have to go out through my ISP (Verizon). Thanks, queenpictoria Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 What email program are you using? Set your SMTP to your domain and make sure you set it to authenticate using your email address and password. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Your SMTP will be mail.domainname.com (change.com for whatever domain ending you have) Hopefully this will work JimE Quote
queenpictoria Posted July 19, 2006 Author Posted July 19, 2006 What email program are you using? Set your SMTP to your domain and make sure you set it to authenticate using your email address and password. Hello. I have installed Thunderbird. I went in and did what I believe to be the same procedure I did with the incoming email. Nothing happens yet. Is there a page with the step by step procedure for the manual setup for outgoing email without having to set up a username and password with my ISP? Is it possible to go directly through TCH Squirrel for incoming mail. I may be missing a step in there somewhere. It seems I am getting close. Regards. queenpictoria Quote
TCH-JimE Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Ok here goes. 1) Open up Thunderbird. Goto tools > account settings 2) Click Add accounts 3) Select Email account. Click Next 4) For your name, type in your name. Click Next 5) For Email address, type in your email address you want to use (Remember, you must have set this up in cpanel before hand). It will be something like notmyrealaddress@domainname.com. Click Next 6) On next page, make sure pop is selected, then put mail.domainname.com where domainname.com is your domain name. Untick the global inbox.Click Next 7. Your incoming username is your email address like in step 5. Click next 8. Type in any name for the account. Click Next 9. You should see something like this: Account Name: Your account name from above Email Address: Your email address from above Incoming User name: Same as your email address Incoming Server Name: mail.domainname.com Incoming server type: pop There are a few more lines, but we will edit thoose in a minute. This will bring you back to your accounts area. If not, goto tools and account options. Scroll down the left hand side until you get to Outgoing Server SMTP. Note you only need to do this next set if you have not done it once. If you have done it once, there is no need to ever to it again unless you need to edit the settings. All email addresses can use the same outgoing server, yet they will still appear to come from the same place. Click on it and click add or if there is one already there, click edit 1. Leave description blank 2. Server name is the same as the server name that we used above. E.g. mail.domainname.com 3. Port number. If your ISP does not block it, use 25 4. Tick the box which says "use name and password" 5. Your user name is the same as the first email address you setup. Don't worry about if you setup later email addresses, they all use this account to be sent out on, but will still appear to come from the originating address This will be notmyrealaddress@domainname.com 6. Tick "no" for secure connection (its what I use anyway!) That it. Click on ok and ok again and now just press get email button! let us know how you go JimE Quote
queenpictoria Posted August 15, 2006 Author Posted August 15, 2006 Hello Jim! It worked! I sometimes fly blind, and I thank you for your kind help. There was one thing you want to know: In step 7 of your instructions, which by the way very thorough, instead of typing in my email address (as you said it was in Step 5) it only took the username part of my email. My email is starrynight@my-domain.com. Step 7 only let me put in "starrynight". So I will archive those directions. I need to set up some other streams of email going into different accounts. I imagine it is the same process using a different email address. I am wondering if they can download into separate folders-- in other words the different email addresses would have different "chutes" to keep them separate from each other. I will take a run at it. Thanks all you guys. Thanks again, Jim, for the specific steps. Regards, queenpictoria Edit: changed domain on that email address so the spammers don't pick it up Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 April, Please see if this is what you are looking for. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Hello, I am glad they worked! Not only can you use filters, but I am guessing that you want email from different email addresses to go into different "inboxs" to be maybe further sorted into seperate folders? If so, goto Tools > account settings. Select the name of the account you wish to have a new inbox for. Select "server settings" and then click on the advanced button Select the "inbox for this servers account" Click on ok and exit. Now that mail box has its own "inbox, outbox etc etc" and all your mail is kept seperate. Now you can filter the email into different folders within your inbox. Hope this goes well JimE Quote
