I have been with totalchoicehosting.com since (nearly) the start of my 'web' presence, but recently found another quite interesting (on first look) offer. can anybody tell me what the negative side to it is? would sure like to have 3gb of space, but am really happy with the way things are going with totalchoicehosting (good support, the forum, etc)

(i worked that out to be 96 dollars for a year).

is totalchoicehosting going to offer something along those lines, ie more space?

TCH-Thomas edited out the link. There is no reason to discuss other webhosting firms in the forum.

Well, let me take a shot at that without discussing the other company.

Here you get great service, excellent member forums with all these great folks out there, as low as $4 / month, and a company willing to discuss the costs with you when you submit a helpdesk ticket asking about your current plan with more space.

I'd say that no one compares to TCH (not in my experience anyway, thus why I'm a mod here - just trying to help) and you should submit a ticket if you have specific needs that aren't in the standard packages.

In my opinion, you can try others but why - it's just not worth it to me to even look at those offers - the prices here are rock bottom and the support more than makes up for any cut-rate service that will pile 10000 accounts on one server.

By the way, original post edited - no sense promoting other competitors to TCH in TCH's forums. Ah, Thomas beat me to it. :P

More space and more bandwidth for close to the same price often means overselling the server in the hosting world. That translates in to a poorer server response and sometimes greater down time.

We undersell the servers to maintain maximum performance. I always say that one should give it a try to see what you would be missing. I can bet that the server response, uptime and support can not be found anywhere else at this or any price point.

Jim, stop typing so fast.

Lets do a little math shall we?

Talk about overselling, gesh!

120GB Hard Drive

Each User is alloted 3GB space

Thats 40 Users per server without any overselling.

40 X 96 = $3,840.00 per year

$3,840 / 12 months = $320.00

So that company can earn without overselling a whopping $320 per month per server.

Lets see.

A decent server cost around $3K to build up

Rackspace, Rent, Power and Bandwidth can be expensive.

A good level1 tech makes a honest buck.

Need a level2 support person to maintain that server when level1 can not.

Lets not forget Billing Personell to man the billing tickets.

Almost forgot about abuse department. What if a spammer got on the server.

Oh we might want to provide a shared SSL certificate on the server, thats another $100 bucks.

Egads, we better monitor that server in case it crashes.

Typical user submits 5 helpdesk ticket per quarter, thats about 2 per month. 40 X 2 = 80 tickets a month. Typical time to work a ticket is about 12 minutes.

Need to pay fringe to staff. They have families you know.

Paid vacations? Yes, I guess they need them.

Christmas bonus, profit sharing, paper supplies, office supplies, rent.

Oh Man, all this from a server that nets me $320 a month!!!

Enough said.
