Top five reasons why TCH should move its forum over to vBulletin software:

5) InvisionBoard forums have always been plagued with a notoriously unreliable e-mail-upon-reply notification system. Not sure what I mean? I'd be happy to offer details.

4) InvisionBoard management has acted unprofessionally (promised an always-free version, then reneged on this promise... just for starters)

3) I feel that vBulletin 3.0 is a nicer system to use -- from both a user and admin perspective -- than IBP 2.0 (and yes, I've tried both)

2) Jelsoft has been around longer than IPS and, IMHO, is likely to be around much longer.

1) vBulletin offers slick (and optional) WYSYWIG editing. Hey, it's not a top reason, but I couldn't think anything else at the moment (aren't the other four enough? :D)

Hey Bill, I definitely appreciate the direct (and prompt!) response.

If you'd be inclined to detail why you're particularly un-fond of vBulletin, that'd be cool, but I'll understand if you'd prefer not to. I'm not looking to debate, just learn.

I currently run an IPB 1.3 forum on one of my sites, and am about ready to buy a vBulletin license and convert it over... but if there are some issues I should be aware of, I'm all ears, er, eyes.

Anyway, with all that said, I'd like to note that I am quite appreciative that TCH has such a comprehensive and useful forum, regardless of the software.

I'd like to know too.... a group I belong to has a Plone Powered site with one of the worst forums I've ever had the displeasure to use. I suggested that they switch to InvisionBoard... I guess because I'm familiar with it. But it would be interesting to hear the pros and cons of other software, especially from people whose opinions I respect.

Ok here are my thoughts.

IPB has been good for us. Like a old dog, always loyal and always by your side. I personally just like the way IPB is set up. The admin interface is easy to use and we have been using it since we opened the doors.

Vbulletin - It is very good and is highly suggested by many. I do no like the admin interface.

PHPBB - Has always been a good board. It is open source so that puts it right on the top of my list.

One drawback I've seen to VBulletin is their inability to do a phrase search. Either that or the site I frequent doesn't implement it properly.

I use phpbb and I love it.

Once I figured out the basics, like changing the board logo, adding avatar galleries, and my own smilies, I haven't had any problems. Took me a while because I'm not very good at this kind of stuff, but I did learn it on my own after reading the tutorials.

I haven't tried Vbulletin or Invision Board.

I think I'll stick to PHPBB.

I also like IPB a lot but I do think vBulletin is by far a superior product. I do not like it's admin interface much either but it's internals are very very solid and well thought.

As for phpBB, I used to like it a lot but over the time, it has been lacking features that have become standard to most other BB systems. If only phpBB 2.2 had already been released.... ;)
