On http://www.google.com/help/features.html#link it says Some words, when followed by a colon, have special meanings to Google. One such word for Google is the link: operator. The query link:siteURL shows you all the pages that point to that URL. For example, link:www.google.com will show you all the pages that point to Google's home page. You cannot combine a link: search with a regular keyword search. I know that atleast some people link to jikrantz.se, but who´s linking to me does not show up when trying this. I then tried 2-3 other sites (made by people on this forum), their linking people are not showing up either. Then I tried it for well known companies like microsoft etc. They showed up instantly. Does anyone know why? If these backlinks are not showing up, then what are they good for? Quote

It is not trusted by any of the SEO experts I "hang with" and can be easily shown to be broken. One thing you can do that is accurate as far as I know is to search for +jikrantz.+se -site:jikrantz.se It shows anything with "jikrantz.se" that's not a link from your site itself. The punctuation throws it off if you just search for "jikrantz.se" by itself. Quote

Google does not have the whole Internet in its database so that may explain why you don't get any links when you try that command with your website. Like for instance, I typed a certain search query which is unique enough that it does not appear on any other pages except on the one that I have in mind and sometimes Google does not come out with any result. I'm guessing Google either cannot or has not crawled to that page yet so it could be that it hasn't crawled to your page. And I'm just guessing the same works for the links command. Quote

How does lack of optimisation affect a page with a phrase unique enough that it only appears on this particular page and no other page on the web? Shouldn't that page appear on the search engine results if I type in that unique phrase? Quote

I can do that with a page on my site and not get results yet it will show up based on other terms that are more popular and I have optimized for. Quote
oompahloompah Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 that's an interesting point, hm which search engine are you referring to by the way? may i ask how does it work when i typed in a unique phrase that only occured once in that page (it's a text database with a list of phrases, all unique from one another) and yet still get a result in the search engine? by the way, I'm using google. and yet in another case as mentioned earlier, i typed a unique phrase which occured in another website and google didn't bring up anything. If Google has totally indexed your page then there's a good chance that you could find your unique phrase - but keep in mind that it may take months for Google to totally index a page. Remember that even if Google goes to your page it doesn't necessarily index it the first time. Some visits are just to see if you exist and others are to index your content. The Link: command in Google is broken. Do not expect it to work because it won't! If you do a link:Microsoft.com you only get 120,000 links and I know there are tons more than that. Besides, many many SEO folks have been saying for months and months that the command's not working properly. Quote
