And if you are one, what distro are you using? About me: I'm running Fedora Core 1 on my laptop which is going to be soon upgraded to FC2, just need time to backup all my courses and reports... And I run Fedora Core 2 on my "desktop" computer. I can't really call it a desktop as it's the most important thing in my small student room I run MythTV on it, and basically that's my multimedia center with a 22' Mitsubishi screen, dolby 5.1 and 330Go HDD And I also use Knoppix, when I am in deep sh*t... To all the Windows user, burn a knoppix cd, reboot your computer and you will be amazed to see, how easy is linux (now..) you may even want to create a linux partition on you HDD after that Ok, I still have the windows 3.1disks and the win98 cd-rom but I do not use them anymore What about you? TCH-Rob Posted June 5, 2004 Posted June 5, 2004 I don't use Linux exactly but I was running FreeBSD. Work required me to bring some things home that required MS products so I reloaded Win2K. I haven't decided if I want to use my extra partition to put BSD back on or throw my 6 Gig back in and use it instead. In reality, I don't have a problem with MS in general and I get paid to provide support for their products and those that use MS so I cant complain. Well, the fact that I am not working is an issue so I am not getting paid for it at the moment but I like both OSes for different reasons. Quote

They have done some great software like M$ Autoroute Express or M$ visio, but I do not see the point in paying $$$$ for having a windows when you can now uselinux very easily. One of my marketing teacher is working at microsoft europe and is the anti-piracy guy for microsoft (belgium or europe not sure) and we had some nice discussions about microsoft and open-souce etc... I like some of their tools but not all of them... Like one thing I find too intrusive it's their policy that after 12 install of windows, you licence is "dead". Or if you want to install it anonymously even if you paid, you can but only once, if you need to reinstall it, they will not give you a second time the activation key unless you provide your contact details... And the last thing, I don't like about tools that are not open source are the spyware! They can come on my computer I only use open-source nothing to hide, but I just don't like the idea of taking info from you and sending them wherever... Ludo Quote

Linux started out as a hobby, but my job may soon require intimate knowledge with Linux, so I'm trying to work & play under FC2. Philosophical arguments aside (as well as all cyber-jihads), I like Linux simply because it seems that I can do more with less. The housekeeping overhead is less with Linux, and I have more control over what is happening. Which is to say, if it breaks I can't blame M$ anymore Quote

(Although I've found myself booting to windows a lot lately, strictly to run iTunes... no good firewire support on my laptop yet, so that's one thing I can't do in Linux at the moment.) Quote

Yeah give it a try to FC2... I choose FC for several reason but the main ones are: - Free ! I have used Suse before but you have to pay to use it, I like to have it for free and give the same amount and even more (if I check my bank account) to help the dev on specific projects. - FC is coming out *very* often. In fact, it will be the only distro out there which is free and which is going to be updated with lots of new things... like GCC, Gnome etc... others are updated too, but not the same way. lol I know my explantion on that point is crap but I don't know how to explain myself better, I have to learn some new english words - The FC mailing... Even if I like more forum, FC ml is great, you have a prbl within min usually you get an answer.. that's a quite heavy ml but really useful! Ludo P.S.: Raul, I'm happy to know that someone agree with me at least, I will not be the bad guy who likes opensource and linux on the forum! lol Quote

I run Windows XP Pro on another machine that I use to play DVDs and such. Mostly because I haven't had a chance to do anything else with it, and if it's running I'm not going to worry about it much. I did install Windows Media Player 9 on it and it about choked. So I may have to revisit that decision soon. I run Windows XP Pro on a laptop that I also use primarily for customer support when I go on-site. Finally, I run Debian on a test box that I have for web site development, and that also acts as a mirror to my site here at TCH. Quote

So I may have to revisit that decision soon. If you have some time to play around give a try to mythTv! You can create a mythtv box very easily ans it requires less ressources than MP9. It is also useful even if you do not use the TV part Ludo Quote
stevevan Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 I have two laptops...one (for work) that runs M$2K and the other (mine) that runs RH9. My home system is a dual-boot M$-RH9 box. Out of curiousity: Can anyone elaborate on how much of a difference is there between RH9 and FC? I'm contemplating possibly moving to Fedora, but I'm interested in the good, bad, and ugly between the two. Quote
borfast Posted June 6, 2004 Posted June 6, 2004 Steve, the difference is in the name, that's it I'm starting to realize that most people think Fedora Core is a totally different distribution from Red Hat Linux. It's not. Fedora Core is a community project backed up by Red Hat and in truth, it's still Red Hat Linux except for the name, because it's still Red Hat that decides everything and builds most of it. The only thing that the "community" does is to provide software packages for the distro. Other than that, you might as well call FC1 "Red Hat Linux 10" and FC2 "Red Hat Linux 11" Quote

tattoovampire Posted July 3, 2004 Posted July 3, 2004 On my primary machine I dual boot into either XP Pro or Mandrake 10, which is to me the fastest Linux distro I have ever run, and I've tried just about every major one from SuSE to Lindows. My other machine dual boots XP Home or Xandros 2.0, which is a nice distro for the noob. And I must admit Crossover Office is the "killer" Linux app. Seeing the famous IE window floating on my Xandros desktop was a surreal experience. Quote
taznumber1 Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 I run gentoo on my server, and also my laptop. I really like the portage system it has, also it was very fast. I tried to use Fedora 2 Core but it does not work well on my laptop. The screen was freezing all the time, and I was not having good luck with it so I switched back to gentoo again and that is where I have stayed. Quote
