chuckmalani Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 hi - i'm helping a friend set up his new TCH starter plan account. when i set up my account, my username was set to the first 7 letters of my domain name. when we did my friend's just now, the email said his username was some random collection of 7 letters, not very easy to remember. is there a way to change that to an easier name? thanks, chuck Quote
DarqFlare Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 We have a policy that username changes cannot occur unless they are vulgar or offensive in nature. Sorry. I can't find the thread that dealt with it... Quote
chuckmalani Posted May 11, 2004 Author Posted May 11, 2004 cool, thats fine - but how come the usernames are now randomly generated instead of the truncated domain name? vulgar names could still be monitored that way, no? thanks for the quick reply, chuck Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 Here is the original post i think. http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/i...ct=ST&f=1&t=976 Could be some security thing they found I think. Quote
chuckmalani Posted May 11, 2004 Author Posted May 11, 2004 cool thanks... someone smarter than me came up with it, so im done asking questions! chuck Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 cool, thats fine - but how come the usernames are now randomly generated instead of the truncated domain name? The username generation is now 100% automated. Didn't use to be. I forget when it changed. I think it was in January. Quote
TCH-Don Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 But this is a good thing. It used to be a hacker trying to access your cpanel would already know your cpanel name and only had to guess the password. If you have trouble remembering it, you can use a password keeper. there is one under freebies in the help site. Quote
silica Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 This begs the question that if randomly generated usernames are more secure, would requests to change the old username (the beginning 7 letter one) to a random one be accepted? Quote
TCH-Rick Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 We would certainly consider a request to change thhe username to a more secure one, particularly if owner believes that someone has tried to hack into his or her account. It is also important to note, however, that there can be problems changing the username, especially after email accounts or scripts have been added. There are a lot of files on the server tied to the username and changing it can create some interesting support tickets. Quote
TCH-Don Posted May 11, 2004 Posted May 11, 2004 As indicated above, changes are only made if the name is vulgar or offensive in nature. I would not worry, just be sure your password is made from letters and numbers and not a word. Quote
DarqFlare Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 I'd hate to see what problems I'd run into if I tried to change a couple of mine, haha... Quote
Head Guru Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 If your old username is not one of the randomly generated usernames, then we would be able to change the username to a random one without any issue. Quote
