  1. Thanks. I think I will go over to the one-"images"-folder solution for now at least. Since mine is not a graphics-oriented site, I don't currently anticipate a hot-linking problem--although I would like to know for future reference how to detect such activity. And for right now at least, I do not foresee the likelihood of my removing subdomains; if anything, I am likely to add more.

    Geography

Here's the idea: Someone names a place. This can be a city, county, state, province, country, continent or other recognized geographic region; the only restrictions are that it must actually exist (that lets out Narnia) or have definitely existed in the past (this rules out Atlantis), and it must not be so obscure that no one else has heard of it. Someone else then responds with another such place whose name begins with the same letter that the previous entry ended with. My first entry: Ulan Bator. P.S.: I left out one rule: The entry must not duplicate any previous entry. (Note that this will require reading the entire topic if you're not sure your entry has not been used.)
  3. Dead. (Sorry, but I just read his obituary quite recently, so that's the first word that came to mind.)
  4. We are. It is distinctive and well drawn.
  5. Thanks, Jim.
  6. Quayle, (J. Danforth III). (A blunt force if ever there was one.)
  7. Thanks, Andy. But is there any advantage, given the added complexity of site maintenance required, in even having the additional "images" folders?
  8. The new version of my site (soon to be uploaded) contains five subdomains in addition to the primary domain. Additionally, some of these are in turn divided into multiple subfolders. I created an "images" folder for each subdomain and each subfolder, with the expectation that I'd place a separate set of images in each as required by the pages therein. However, I have found substantial overlap, and also find as a result that every time I add or update an image, the change must be reflected in many folders--which is a time-devouring pain. My question: Can I consolidate all the images into one "images" folder on my primary domain, and then use absolute URLs (e.g.: "http://www.squort.com/images...") to call them up for my pages? Or is there some reason why in fact I have to keep 15 separate "images" folders?
  9. I'm not trying to be unduly contrary here, but isn't there room for a few unhappy endings in literature? Apparently, Robert, you felt the author's work was good apart from the ending, so I don't think what we have here is a lack of ability or talent. I think it's just differing philosophies as to what constitutes a "good" ending. Also, this may not apply to this specific situation, but some of the best works of literature, historically, have ended unhappily. Can you imagine Shakespeare's tragedies, or any of the horror of Edgar Allan Poe or H.P. Lovecraft, with a happy ending? Would a Crime and Punishment have been bettered by a light and carefree conclusion? Obviously, happy endings are popular; after all, they leave readers feeling uplifted, inspired, and, above all, well, happy. Hollywood is well aware of this; hence all the joyful endings to most popular screenplays. But I also think there is room in the vast edifice of English/American literature for sorrow, for horror, tragedy and death, for the entire complex of what might be called unhappy endings; for, ultimately, what is literature but a mirror of life itself? And since when do all life's endeavors end joyously?
  10. I suspect part of the problem may be that the Flash installer does not recognize browsers other than Internet Exploder and Netscrape. Last time I installed an update to Flash, the installer asked if I wanted to install the plug-in in those two browsers, but no mention was made of my (admittedly slightly obscure Mac OS 9 version of) Mozilla. Chances are, you'll have to install manually on browsers other than the "mainstream" ones--and Flash's definition of "mainstream" appears to be a rather narrow one. (Note that I could be mistaken as this applies to other flavors of Mozilla as well as Opera and the like; what I describe is only my own experience, and your mileage may vary. )
  11. Congratulations are definitely in order. And this would also explain why "someone else" is using DarqFlare's old logo. I was kind of wondering if he'd licensed it out to a TCH moderator. Well done, TCH-DarqRobertFlare!
  12. Corn. As in Stephen King's "Children of the Corn." (What I think of when I think of Nebraska.)
  13. Waltz.
  14. Hmm. Perhaps if I spoke Korean or Japanese ....
  15. Dakota: One thing you haven't specified is with whom you registered the domain name. If it is, in fact, secureserver.net, then the e-mail is probably legitimate. Probably. As a general rule, though, it is safest, when in doubt, to enter the address for the service in question (this applies to all sites that take credit card numbers and other financial data, Paypal or otherwise) in your browser address bar and then double-check that you are taken to a secure (https://...) server. This avoids being led to fake sites, which can sometimes look virtually identical to the sites they are designed to simulate. If you did not get the domain name through secureserver.net, I would advise you to proceed warily.
  16. Hedgehog.
  17. The actual quote attributed to Mark Twain (probably apocryphally): "There are lies, damn lies and statistics."
  18. Captain. (I always seemed to be captain of my spelling-bee teams in school. )
  19. Gambol. (Oh, and by the way: EricHamilton: The words you are referring to are neologisms--words that I created, in the literary tradition of Lewis Carroll [who, as you can probably tell, is a favorite author of mine ]. If you can't deduce their meaning, just click on the words--which are links--and you will see a new window containing their definitions. I am aware that using neologisms is unusual, but there is really no practical difference between that and simply using some of the more obscure words in the dictionary. Either way, if you are to respond to an unfamiliar term, you will need to look it up somewhere before you can make an educated reply. And in this case it is actually easier: The page defining the words is a mere click away! )
  20. Yes, and Microsoft exists for the public good.
  21. Well, you know what they say: "No good deed goes unpunished."
  22. Couldn't help but be reminded of this: Two cows are standing in a pasture. One of them asks, "Have you heard about this mad cow disease that's been going around?" "Don't talk to me," says the other. "I'm a helicopter."
  23. Well, coming from a vampire ....
  24. Enrot. Yuck!
  25. Hmm. I can't seem to get rid of the "&quot" in the foregoing post. My apologies for any confusion.
