Thanks for the tip, HC!

Weezy, is the thumbnail directory set with the correct permissions?
-
Weezy and Thomas, be carefull, that's the new Gallery 2.0, which is still in Alpha stage and unless they changed their minds, they are not going to provide an easy (if at all possible) upgrade path from the alpha versions to the beta or final versions. That means if you install the Alpha version now, you may risk beign stuck with it even when the beta and final versions come out (unless you feel like doing a tiny bit of manual database hacking ) I can't remember where I saw this, I believe it was in the README file that comes with the package, or perhaps it was in the site... anyway, think about it

Thanks for the tip, Hunter Let us know how it works

Alex, sorry for taking so long to reply. My ISP had a major problem in my area, yeasterday. I lost internet connectivity at around 3:00 PM and it only came back this morning. As for the dedicated server question, Mike Jones (TCH-MikeJ) refreshed my memory about it and yes, TCH will take care of installing security patches for the standard packages. Anything else you install has to be maintained by you. One other thing Mike reminded me about is that TCH is currently not taking orders for dedicated servers. At least as far as both him and I heard. But the best you can do is request a dedicated account and you'll hear back from the higher department
-
Yes, you do. You have root access, you can do whatever you want One note, though. I think I may have explained myself poorly in the previous post: I'm not sure if TCH keeps your 100% managed server up to date with the latest security updates. What I meant is that TCH will take care of things for you if you ask for something to be done. But I'll ask someone to confirm this
-
The semi-dedicated is basically a very large reseller account. You don't have root access or anything else you don't get with a regular reseller account. Only more hard disk space and bandwidth. As for the difference between unmanaged and 100% managed servers, in an unmanaged server, TCH installs the operating system and necessary server software, configures it and from there it's up to you. You're the one who has to install security updates, extra software, etc. In a 100% managed solution, TCH does it all for you. Hope this helps

Hello Jim, and welcome to your extended family! This should be a settings problem. TCH places no restrictions on which FTP client you use. Do you have anonymous FTP activated on your site? If not, using only that URL will not work, you'll need to provide a username and password along with the URL, such as ftp://username:password@yoursite.com. I do not recommend this, though as the username will be left visible on explorer's history. You could try a real FTP client, such as SmartFTP. Hope this helps. If you need anything, just ask here on the forums! By the way, I'm moving this to a more appropriate forum for better exposure and organization. Edit: I just read Bruce's post. I didn't think of that: if you don't provide a username and password, it will ask you to enter that information. LOL Sorry, I must be needing to sleep some more But I still recommend you use a real FTP client instead of Windows

And yet another one... *sigh* From Slashdot:

Cheryl, I gave up on Outlook many years ago, and e-mail viruses never got to me either (I wonder why... ). As for browsing, I also gave up on IE many years ago, too (first used Opera, then switched to Mozilla and now I'm a fan o Firefox ), and I never had any problems with internet spyware and viruses. The only problems I had were caused by software I downloaded, mainly shareware. But fortunately, I seem to be able to smell those things at a distance of 5 miles, so whenever I suspected a program had some stuff in it I didn't want, I killed it. Nowadays it's rather easy to avoid that. You just need to be carefull with what software you run on your machine and keep an anti-virus and anti-spyware program at hand. Either that or, if you want a 99.9999999% effective solution, quit using Windows...
-
Virus vendors? You mean I can go out to a store and buy a copy of Sasser?? Good lord, where have I been?? Just kidding, Bob Thanks for the info. I already tried that MS AntiSpyware and it looks good but on the other hand, I'm starting to think that it takes a similar approach to spyware as CA's Pest Patrol - it said Winpcap was a spyware threat when Winpcap is nothing more than a harmless packet capture library (and MS Anti Spyware says so itself). They should concentrate on catching spyware programs *that use* this library to spy on the user, not the library itself, since this will scare users of legit programs that make use of Winpcap

In English Paulo, Invision Power Board 2.0 is a more robust software but it is no longer free as version 1.3 was. Version 1.3 is no longer supported, which means that sooner or later, it will have problems but there will be no one to fix them. So I suggest you use phpBB, which continues to be actively developed e thus it is guaranteed that any problems that may arise will be fixed. Besides, phpBB 2.2 is almost finished, and it promises to be a big revolution regarding the previous version

You know me, I just couldn't let this slip by... From Slashdot: They're so bad at writing programs that their software crashes even in an important show such as this one... and they want me to pay for their products? Only their mice... Mr. Gates, that's the second time your products crash while you're demonstrating them. I wonder if it will take a third time for you to do something about it... The part about the communists is quite interesting, too. If not for anything else, it demonstrates how ignorant Mr. Gates is regarding Free software and the philosophy behind it

Nice work, Don I have tried Drupal 4.5 and I must say it was the first CMS that almost convinced me to use it. It's still far from what I'd consider perfect but it's definitely the best I've seen so far. I know that others like ezPublish and Typo3 are much more powerfull and have many more features but the ease of use and logical way of working of Drupal pushed it to the top of my list

Welcome aboard, and thanks for sharing your solution to the problem!

You'll have to save each image to your public_html directory (or a sub-directory), because the address you mentioned needs a username and password to be accessed. You could use it but you would have to include the username and password in the URL, making it visible in the HTML source code. Another option would be to make a script that receives an URL variable indicating which flag you want to display. The script would then fetch the corresponding image via the secure URL. This way you could have the username and password in the script, since it is not visible to your site's visitors.

This browser detection code made by Gary White is very good: http://www.apptools.com/

Glad I could help By the way, I tested it and I noticed that the username is not case sensitive.

*sigh* Deja vu, anyone? http://www.computerworld.com/securitytopic...1,98636,00.html As usual, "Microsoft is working to forensically analyze the malicious code in Phel and will work with law enforcement agencies to identify and bring to justice those responsible for the malicious activity" but Microsoft itself will not be held responsible for all the damages their crippled software causes. As a software developer myself, I know that it's almost impossible to make a 100% bug free software but come on, Microsoft's software is becoming ridiculous...
-
Hmmm... that looks very interesting! Thanks a lot! It can actually be very usefull for something TCH wants to do!
-
lol I didn't interpret it as if you were requesting it from me I can try to repackage it and send it to you, if you want (although I don't know if that violates any part of the original trial agreement) but I don't think you'll have much success installing it, since the install directory is gone As for the IPB SDK, I have no idea, I didn't even knew there was one available

I tend to disagree a bit regarding the processor, because it makes a huge difference if you can use your laptop unplugged for just 1-2 hours or 5 hours. As Bob said, Centrino doesn't just mean "wireless internet". Centrino is actually a set of technologies from Intel, including a wireless networking chip, a graphics processing chip (graphics card) and the Pentium M CPU. The big advantage of the Pentium M is that it consumes much less power than any other mobile processor and thus it heats much less and the laptop battery lasts much longer - my laptop battery has reached beyond 5 hours, once. It's so good that Intel is pushing it to the desktop market So here's what I think you should consider: 1 - Are you going to work with the laptop always (or most of the time) plugged to the electrical grid? If so, buy an Athlon 64 (or Pentium 4, but I recommend the Athlon) for more power. If you need to work with your laptop a lot without any external electrical power, then go for the Centrino/Pentium M for extended battery life. 2 - Are you going to do graphics intensive work, like photo editing (I mean BIG photos), 3D rendering, video processing, etc? If so, get at least 512 MB of RAM (I'd probably say 1 GB). You should also probably get a graphics card with dedicated video memory, not the slow shared memory (shared memory video cards use the computer's RAM for video memory, which is very slow for graphics). 3 - How much disk space will you need? Well, actually, I recommend you get the biggest hard drive you can, since hard disk space is always precious Of course you're the one who knows how much you need and based on that you should decide how big you need the HDD to be. Hope that helps

Let me know how it goes

Yes, I did get the 2.0 trial. Unfortunately I installed it and deleted the downloaded package Anyway, you can still get a trial version but it's encoded with Zend Encoder or IonCube and has a bunch of limitations.
