  5. Well, to be honest, it isn't all that amazing... in fact, there are numbers thrown in there just to make it seem more impressive than it is. Let us consider an example case where a phone number is 123-4567. Since the example has you input the two parts of the phone number separatley, we'll break them into two distinct numbers. We'll let a variable, x, represent the number 123, and we'll let a variable, y, represent 4567. In order to express this mathmatically, you can't just say >xy because that means 'x multiplied by y' So to express this mathmatically, we'll say it is >10000x + y because if you multiply x by 10,000, then add y, you get your phone number. (See, because 10,000 multiplied by x is just x with four zeros after it; add the last four digits, and you have your phone number). Ok. so we know that 10,000x + y gives us our phone number. So lets look at the math that we are told to do. If you write out the equation given, you get the following: >{ [ ( 80x + 1 )250 ] + [2y - 250] / 2} = 10,000x + y If you simplify the left side of the equation by doing the multiplication on the top of the fraction, you get the following: >[( 20,000x + 250 +2y - 250) / 2] = 10,000x+y Notice that on the top of the left side you have a +250 and a -250. They cancel themselves out, so you are left with: >[( 20,000x + 2y) / 2] = 10,000x + y Simplify the left side further by dividing by 2, and what do you get? >10,000x + y = 10,000x + y ...which we already established is your phone number. Basically you can put any 3-digit number between 100 and 999 in for x, and you can put any 4-digit number between 1000 and 9999 in for y, and the equation will work. It is really quite simple math. Anytime I see these mysterious number tricks where I'm supposed to enter in any random number and get an expected output, I always know that I can substitue variables to see how it is done. That is, after all, the whole point of a variable. Hope I didn't ruin it for anybody
  6. Has the winner of this contest been announced, and I just missed it? I was surprised that all activity on this thread died two days ago...
  7. Thanks, Thomas.
  8. I just got a reply from TCH-Abdul who said he was able to resolve the mySQL problem, so I guess the problem was server side. Anyway, the site is back up again. Glad TCH could fix it. I never know exactly when to contact the help desk, because I don't know when the problem is server-side and when the problem is with the 3rd-party script, you know?
  9. Its broken again. I wonder what is going on. I commented on my help desk request to let them know it is broken again. Still no reply yet on the ticket. I'll let you know if something happens here....
  10. Now it seems to be working. Maybe the help desk ticket was the trick. However, they haven't replied to it or resolved it, so I'm not sure WHAT it was that fixed the problem. Maybe it was the THINK method of server repair: think about it long enough, and the problem will solve itself! Then again, maybe it was the help desk, and they just haven't had a chance to close the ticket or respond to it. In any case, what is important to me is that the site is working! Thanks for all your help.
  11. If you refresh the page, it switches between error 28 and error -1. I put a question in to the wordpress support forums, and I asked the TCH help desk to look at my account to see if it is the error 28 (out of space) error. I guess I'll let you know what either the help desk or the wordpress support forums say.
  12. Clicking "Repair the database" in MySQL Databases didn't solve the problem.
  13. I went to a wordpress blog that I manage today, and I'm seeting the following error at the top of the page: When I log in to the wp-admin area, and go to the manage posts page, I see the same error; none of my content is shown. I don't know what my first error recovery steps should be. (FYI, this site is for my brother-in-law, and my mother-in-law is the person who adds all the content. I just keep the WordPress code up-to-date, and manage the server and stuff. So I don't know what happened that caused this error.)
  14. I guess it depends on how bad you want to test everything. Are you transferring the exact same site that you had on your old host? If so, chances are pretty good it will just keep working like it did. Are you making new changes to your site at the new host? That may not have been the easiest choice. Its kind of like upgrading your hardward. If you only upgrade one piece at a time, if something goes wrong, you know where the problem is... If you REALLY want to test it before it goes live, you might consider registering a test domain, and setting up a hosting account for a month. For as little as $9 bucks for domain registration and $4 for one months' hosting, you could test your site on a working domain. When all is working correctly, you could have the help desk switch your content to the domain you will be using, and let that one go live. I don't know. It is how I would probably do it, if testing were extremely important before site launch. Best wishes. Welcome to the forums and to the TCH family.
  15. How much security are you really wanting? I mean, there are some really simple solutions out there; you could modify a php script to require some input from the user, and check that against your set password. If they matched, it would let them in, and if it didn't they wouldn't. There are also some scripts I've seen that protect content, but they are pretty easy to hack (some even have the available passwords as an array in the javascript file--which you can set as a separate file, but its certainly not secure but it would keep out the casual web visitor). So I guess the answer depends on the level of security you are looking for. If you don't mind if people can semi-easily hack their way in, then there are some really easy options using javascript If you are wanting more secuirty, you'll probably want to find something in php (which keeps the password in a separate php file, which won't be readable to any web visitors), or similar. I'm guessing this wouldn't be that hard to write for an experienced PHP person.
  16. link (PS: Does Curtis get some prize for making post #10,000 to this thread?)
  17. I don't mind WHAT the number is, as long as it is one of MY posts! LOL
  18. Cool counter. I think you're off on Earth's population by about 3 zeros.... its 6 BILLION not MILLION. Cool site. Thanks!
  19. /wave to TCH-Thomas Sorry, um, Rob. I wasn't talking to you....
  20. Somehow I missed this thread. Then I was reading a different one, and I saw TCH-Aaron -- and I'm thinking to myself -- hey; I didn't know that Aaron had been made a moderator. So I found this thread. Congratulations Aaron!! I'm sure you'll do a great job. Maybe next month you can win the moderator of the month award.
  21. Hello world
  22. Weird. You're right about the version numbers. I didn't check them. I got one email from the phpBB group on Sunday morning titled: "phpBB 2.0.17 released" with the following first line: "phpBB Group announces the release of phpBB 2.0.17, the "no, we did not forget naming it last time" release." Then later on Sunday, I got an email from phpBB with the title: "phpBB 2.0.18 released" with the following first line: "The phpBB Group is pleased to announce the release of phpBB 2.0.18, "The Halloween Special" release." Then today, I got the following e-mail from phpBB: "phpBB 2.0.18 repackaged" with the first line: "Hi, we just noticed that some changes were not checked in to CVS and thus been missing within the released 2.0.18 packages. We repackaged phpBB 2.0.18 and also updated the changed files package. Maybe the message to me about the .17 release just got stuck in their queue. I just assumed it was a new release and didn't check my installation to see what version I was running. In any case, if you updated your phpBB to .18 yesterday, you'll probably need to re-do it today, since there was information missing from that update. Here is the entire e-mail I got from phpBB addressing the problems with yesterday's build of .18: Best wishes. Happy Halloween. Sorry for the .17 mixup...
  23. Hello fellow TCHers. Happy Halloween (for those of you who celebrate it...) I did a quick check of the forums, and hadn't seen mention of this yet, so I thought I'd let you know that PHPBB released 2.0.17 and 2.0.18 today. If you didn't make the 2.0.17 update (it was released Sunday morning; 2.0.18 was released Sunday afternoon), you can just use the instructions to skip the .17 update and go right to the .18 update. You can find more information on their website: http://www.phpbb.com Here is an excerpt from their site: Remember, it is your responsibility to keep your installed scripts up to date, so be sure to update your PHPBB boards!! Happy halloween celebrations.
  24. Rundi, in your error log, it appears that you are displaying your cPanel login name. I'd go through and edit those out so that you don't announce your cPanel name to the world. (Or maybe one of the mods could do that for you.) Glad your problem seems to be solved.
  25. I have to get in! An interesting thread. And welcome to the forums (finally!), GroovyFish! LOL
