No, that's not true. Every message has a header and every email client knows which emails it previously downloaded so only new messages would come down when using POP. When using IMAP, you see the headers for any messages on the server and don't see the actual message until you open it. And yes, you must have an active connection to use IMAP. Nothing is stored locally.

What it's telling you is it gave up trying to send to your domain address because it was failing to find it. Depending on the service you sent the message through and how they have it set up would depend on how long or how many tries it would take before sending a message back to you that your message was not delivered.

Go into your settings on gmail and add your domain address so you can reply with that. Then when you add your domain address check this radio button. Using IMAP keeps all messages on the server. You are bound by the quota you set or the size of your account so yes, you can run out of room to store messages. About deleting with IMAP. Since the message is on the server, if you delete it then it is gone. It would have no effect on any email you have popped off the server in Outlook or any other email client. The key word here is POP. If you are using IMAP, then yes, the message would no longer be available to your email client.

Just create a forward for it and you will receive a copy in your account and where ever you forward it too.

If you have an account on your domain and also created a forward to gmail for the same account you don't need to check the leave messages on the server. That is only for if you are popping you account from more than one location. How you are doing is not popping at gmail but receiving a copy of the message. If you chose to use IMAP I would suggest that you get yourself a copy of Portable Thunderbird and set it up on a USB flash drive. Using IMAP is similar to using web mail. You are accessing your email directly on the server. If you delete a message in IMAP it deletes it on the server. You would not be able to pop the message later once you deleted it. I use Portable Thunderbird on a USB flash drive when I am away so that I can delete messages I've responded and not have to pop them and delete them later.

The servers that were sending the mail to you were holding the messages. Once the server routes were propagated after the migration those servers delivered the mail. That's the way it works.

You cannot add forwards to AOL or Comcast. Please see the 2-month old posted notice about this. If you add them they will be deleted with no warning.

I have tried setting up the FTP part of the script. Unfortunately ncftpput is not supported on the server I am on or any of the others I would imagine. I don't know if the one Don links to above allows you to FTP or not. I set up a special email address to send the backups to that I make and it works well for me.

Same here, I used Blogger first then MT and now Wordpress. Wordpress has the capability to import your Blogger blog.

Since you asked my opinion I will tell you. If you have a static site (html pages) any time you make changes you should make a backup of your site. I myself prefer to use the full backup method. Yes it takes a tech to restore it but nine out ten times you aren't going to need the backup. But that one time you need it, you will have it. For a site that is database driven, you only need to take a backup of the full site if you make any template or other static part changes but you should backup your database every day.

Yes it does. There are two ways to do it. One is as Don describes which is to do a home backup and then the databases. The other is to do a full backup which gets everything in your web space including databases. One thing to remember with a full backup is one of the techs needs to restore it for you.
