About the dial-up/analog router, is the modem a WinModem? I read the Routers will NOT work with WinModems Can you try by passing the router. If it is a WinModem, have you tried an external modem? When I used an external usb modem, all my connection problems went away. just some thoughts.

With out knowing where the guestbook came from, not going to be much help. Have you tried the advanced guesbook that you can have your cpanel install for you? its under cgi-scripts, and you just have to type in a folder name, follow the link to the admin page using the user and password supplied. Then in the admin, change the password. And you are set.

I use CoreFTP lite and just right click a folder for properties and then chmod I can control click multiple files and folders to chmod at once, but not the files inside a folder. For that I need to go inside the folder. I do not see a way to mass change the indexing.

I wonder if for the script the user should be cpanelname_databasename ?
