Minet
Okay my very first post and like most newbies I'm gonna be asking probably a stupid question....how do I change my user name in cpanel? I was finally able to change my password and that took me oh....bout an hour! You guys really don't want anyone hacking into other people's sites do you? I was about ready to throw the dictionary at the monitor and scream for it to find it's own stupid password! But after 20 or so tries I finally got it to take something even though I had to write it down and I'll never remember it without my notes. But I digress....changing username? Is it possible? Currently it's set up for the strange name that TCH gave me but geesh I'll never remember that AND the password also! So help please? Thank you very much for your time after giggling and pointing and asking whether this person is capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time. Madmanmcp
Sorry, you can't change it.
Minet
Thanks Madmanmcp I guess I'll just have to live with it then and hope I never ever ever lose the original email or my notes!
TCH-Thomas
I think you can have the welcome email resent to you in case of an emergency, but im not sure.
TCH-Rob
Thomas is right, we can get it to you if you lose it. Remember as well, a password is no good if you cant remember it and writing it down defeats the purpose. A good password contains upper and lower case characters, numbers and special characters if possible. It can be tough to come up with something that has all of that and still be remembered. To make things easier, I pick a phrase I know well. If I am a Dirty Harry fan and I like the part where he says "you've got to ask yourself one question" then I may make my password Yg2ay1? or if my favorite song is Video Killed the Radio Star, and please dont tell me if it is, then the password may be Mf$Vktr$ for "My Favorite Song, Video Killed the Radio Star. Substituting symbols for similar looking letters. The entire idea is to make sure it is as difficult as possible to crack yet something you can remember. A password isnt meant to keep you out, it is there to only let you in.
TCH-Don
And if you look on the Totalchoice Hosting Help Site under freebies for a password keeper, it will help store all those passwords in a secure file. And you only have to remember one password to open it, and it can launch a site and copy user/password to login boxes. Minet
a password is no good if you cant remember it and writing it down defeats the purpose. Thanks Rob:) You gotta know though that your dealing with a middleaged premenopausal woman who at most times of the day has a two year old clinging to her legs! Eventually as I use the password over and over it will become lodged in my short term memory (hopefully this will only take several weeks...) and then I'll be able to throw the notes away. Thanks for responding!
LisaJill
Theoretically you should be changing your password every 45 days, although I tend to do mine every 90 or so days. I'm just not that creative...

ubergal
Geez, just trying to post this reply, I had to request my password. Sheesh. I just purchased a new account and got the gobildigook username. My other account, which I purchased a few years ago, came with a sensible username - thank god. I know that security is a concern, but could you not let people create their own usernames as you do for passwords? I have had trouble in the past with trying to access a site to make changes from a different computer, and not being able to gain access because I couldn't remember the gobildigook username. Talk about maddenning! I think this new system is likely to cause many upsets, and, it seems to me, that a simple solution would be to let the user choose their own username. To be honest with you, if I had known that the "policy" had changed since my first account, I might have chosen to go with the other hosting provider I was considering. That might sound drastic, even though I know you're doing it for our own safety, but the experience of not being able to access my own site was so intensely negative that I want to avoid it at all costs. Well, that's my rant for the day.
TCH-Tim
I'm afraid that the random usernames are part of our security policy and not likely to change anytime soon. I feel your pain though - I have dozens of different usernames (along with random secure passwords) that I have to remember. I use KeePass to keep track of all my various usernames and passwords. Easy to use, secure, and it fits on a USB thumbdrive so I can take it anywhere.
stevevan
I'm kinda in the same boat as Tim. Try remembering several username/password combinations with passwords that change MONTHLY. That's the government for ya! You might also want to look at anypassword. I have mine loaded on a USB drive and synch'd onto my hard drive as a backup. Have had a password issue in nearly 2 years. Samrc
I've been using AnyPassword for years now and have given it to bosses, friends, relatives that are NOT computer whizes. Each find it to be the best and tiniest tool on their computers. (found out about it on this forum) Comes in a free version (I use this one) and pro (paid) version with more features. cajunman4life
Thanks for the link to KeePass Tim. I may have to try it out. Personally I've been using a text file encrypted by Blowfish Advanced CS (http://www.lassekolb.info/bfacs.htm) using the Twofish algorithm (love Bruce's work btw) and a randomly-generated key file (which I keep on my USB memory stick... people often ask why I have it with me everywhere I go and never let it out of my sight). wampthing
I have mine tattooed on my buttox. I figured that way, I would know if someone was snooping. Now that I have several accounts, I am very happy that I have a large rump.

cajunman4life
I have mine tattooed on my buttox. Tried that, but I had a problem... I couldn't figure out how to access it while at work. Seriously, what would we do without you around here?
TCH-Don
Thanks Dave, I always need a good smile now and then I too use anypassword on a usb drive. I like the way it opens the sites for me so I don't have to have them in my browser favorites.

Deverill
Dave's method does have the added security of it being backwards to anyone "shoulder surfing" and looking at the password tattoo... since it's clearly written backwards to appear correct in the mirror he uses to see it. youneverknow
To access the computers at my workplace, we use a "secure ID tag" that randomly changes the 6 digit password every 1 minute. It looks like a keyfob you put on you keyring and is virtually impossible to get around. youneverknow
abinidi
I use SecureID at work too. It drives me crazy. I hate it. And I don't have the key-ring sized one that my newer co-workers do. I have one that is she shape of a credit card, but about 6 credi cards in thickness. What a pain in the patootie. But it is secure. I'll take TCH's random username policy anyday over having to use a SecureID to authenticate onto my website...
