Virtual Imager Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 Hope this is the right place to post this... And I hope I can explain the problem sufficiently with my (very) limited understanding of any of this: Last night my husband (who runs Windows 98) stuck a new 256 meg memory stick into his computer which apparently wasn't supported by Win98. It crashed and lost the registry. When he restored, it used a registry from two years ago. It can't find a more recent version and none of his programs will run... Any suggestions? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 Ouch, that's bad. I take it there is no complete backup of the machine that can be restored. Reinstalling the applications is all I can think of. Hang around and maybe someone else can work some magic for you. Sorry, I can't be of more help for you. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 Hi Vi, thats a tough one since you restored an old one...and I am not sure how you restored it. But, see if one of these help. http://www.allcentex.com/ce/pc/sw/win98/win98restore.htm http://www.superwin.com/frescue8.htm Quote
Virtual Imager Posted April 28, 2004 Author Posted April 28, 2004 Thanks Madman! I'll pass those on to my husband... and let you know if they worked. He's not too happy right now so I think I'll just leave them on the counter and tiptoe out the door for a while. It will be safer that way. LOL You rock, Madman... and Rock Sign VI Quote
Madmanmcp Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 LOL, hopefully one will work and life will return to normal. Now it may not be all that bad, as Bruce suggested you can also recover the programs by simply reinstalling them, the data is still there and can be accessed once the programs work again. The problems will be if you have programs that you do not have the original installation disks for...thats when you run for cover. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 Madman, those links look promising. Especially the first one. I know the feeling, been there, done that. LOL! Quote
HCSuperStores Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 FYI - I ran a machine with 1 256MB chip and 1 64MB chip with Win 98 and it worked just fine for several years. You may have something else going on that caused the registry to become defective. Might want to think about this as you try to recover. Quote
Virtual Imager Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 Well apparently it didn't just crash... it burned too. It won't recognize the drive, won't boot... It's caught in an endless loop: Registry Corrupt, Found good registry, Install registry?, yes, registry corrupt... ad infinitum. I'm running for deep cover! Thanks anyway, guys. VI Quote
scotttyz Posted April 29, 2004 Posted April 29, 2004 I had the same problem once Took a complete reformat and reinstall To save the data you could put the drive in another computer as a slave to try to get the info off of it, but beware of viruses that could have been part of the problem. All of the programs will look like they are there but with the registry crash most wont work Quote
Virtual Imager Posted April 29, 2004 Author Posted April 29, 2004 Yeah... this really bites! He's trying to get the data saved onto another machine before he thows this one off the balcony... Quote
