Webmail And Bandwidth

Hi,

 

I would like to know how the amount of bandwith you are using is determined. If I remember it correctly, not only the data transfer to people that are viewing your site, but also your e-mail traffic is considered as well.

 

I can understand the first part, but I would like to know in what respect your e-mail traffic contributes to your amount of bandwith. Do the following things contribute to the usage of bandwidth or not:

• incomming e-mails
  
• outgoing e-mails
  
• amount of e-mail residing on server
  

or of course any posts I may have forgotten.

Bandwidth is all incoming and out going traffic.

So yes e-mail sent to you,

and then looked at by you on web mail or downloaded to a pop client

as well as ftp uploads and downloads.

 

In other words any activity incoming or out going counts,

or think of it as whenever your part of the server is accessed.

 

The e-mail on your server counts when it arrives, and again when you look at it,

but if you leave it there it is just taking up space, unless you look at it again.

That does make sense indeed. However, currently my e-mail account (myaddress@****) is receiving quite an amount of SPAM e-mails, which evidently would add considerably to the bandwidth of my TCH account. What means does TCH provide to prevent or get rid off this unwanted e-mails?

Hi,

what i think is its the client's responsiblity to keep take neccessary actions to prevent spam.

 

If you are getting mails on any specific Alias other than you default account you can turn it off for a week or so which would help in stopping the spam stuff, the world is facing today.

 

Infact many of spammers search for mailto tags used on webpages which let them have you ID.

TCH is not directly resposible i suppose.

but at TotalchoiceHosting, the starter plan allows 5.5 gig so that should help.

 

Even so there is something you can do to cut back on spam here.

When you sign up, you will get a link to log on your control panel

and will find that you can enable Spam Assassin.

See the help site for more on how to configure it.

OK, I can agree with this up to a certain level. I wouldn't consider putting a normal mailto link on your web pages to be very smart. Nevertheless, there are plenty of other ways the spammers can obtain your e-mail address. It is well possible that the spammer gains your e-mail address from one of the recepients of your own e-mails. I think it's a bit far-fetched to say that a user is responsible for what a recepient does with your e-mail address...

 

But, I think this discussion tends to get a bit off-topic. I'm not suggesting that TCH is responsible for blocking SPAM. I would only appreciate it if they provide some means/tools to reduce the amount of SPAM ... and luckily they do

Actually, currently the bandwidth of my mail-acount doesn't contribute to my usage of bandwidth. The reason why I'm considering moving my account to TCH resides in the fact that their amount of diskspace and bandwidth is rather small and relatively expensive. Furthermore, I didn't realise that 5.5 gig is already quite a number Naughty

Yes if that mail is transferred to someone you are Exposed.

 

And if the recepient is infected with virus even then you are at risk without any fault of your's

Out of curiosity, how do you put your e-mail on your site other than using the mailto tag? Forms? Some other way?

 

I may have to learn how to make forms just to keep my TCH mail cleaner, unlike my ISP e-mail. (Actually, I can MAKE them, it's making them WORK that I'm a bit iffy on!)

bellringr, I use a little email address encoder program called Em@ilEncoder V2.0. I suppose there are others out there. I just checked the web link for it but got a Page Not Found error. If you want it, let me know. It's freeware and very easy to use.

bell, I use dodos mail for a feedback form - my email isn't posted on m site anywhere, to get it people have to use the form =)

 

has helped a fair bit, I'd say. My spam used to increase daily, since I put that in its stayed a steady amount. =)

I use that too. I don't have my email address posted anywhere on my site.
