Well, you can register for all of them.. But my top 3:

Google

Yahoo (Now that they no longer use Google)

MSN

I don't really know of many others that are top-tier, so...

The only search engines I use consistently are Yahoo! and Google.

I used to use AltaVista in the very early days of the internet, but I don't recall what happened to them. Also, is Lycos still around?

My five:

1. Google even though they are brain dead from time to time.

2. Yahoo!

3. MSN

4. AOL

5. Ask Jeeves

Yahoo! because they are connected. They just bought several SE's.

MSN and AOL because there are a lot of folks that use them because they "came with the computer" (or with AOL). Not everyone is willing to go looking for a search engine when IE or AOL has a search box right over "there".

Ask Jeeves because it has a fair following and caters to a different type of user.

Here's a link that may be of interest: searchenginewatch.com/reports/article.php/2156451 It's Nielson ratings for search engines.

My top five (plus :goof: ):

Not Google, don't register with them let them find you through a reciproal link.

Yahoo is important but not free ($299.00 annual)

Dmoz, very important and free (just be patient).

MSN, free

AlltheWeb, free

Altavista tied with Netscape, both free

Lycos/Hotbot, fee

Teoma, free

4. Google

5. AskJeeves.com

I've always been extremely pleased with Google -- its speed and its accuracy. Ocassionally, if I'm not having luck finding something, I'll try AskJeeves. But Google is always my first choice. Being on dialup, Yahoo and other sites take too long to load, which becomes unbearable if you're looking through several pages of results. Google is clean and fast.
