TCH-Rick Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 How are you installing phpbb? The easiest way to install it is to go to the cPanel and install the Bulletin Board under the cgi scripts section. It will prompt you for a subdiretory name (I used forum) and do all the work for you. Quote
Guest Phate Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 So I just go to the cpanel and install the bulletin board from there. do i have to install phpbb or anything. what do i have 2 do? Phate Quote
TCH-Rick Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 The Bulletin Board option on the cPanel is PhpBB so if you install it from there it will set up the database and user name as well as all the config settings to run the board. It will be set up with your cPanel login name as administrator so you can log in to the admin section using your cPanel login info and set things up like you want. I set one up to play with it some time back and found it to be pretty straight forward. Quote
Guest Phate Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 ok - thanks a lot!! very appreciated Phate Quote
Guest Guest Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 it still doesnt work it says "could not connect to the database." my website address is www.wrestlingaction.com what do i put as the database server hostname? I'll be back this evening. Lianna Quote

Lianna so for the database server hostname i put www.wrestlingaction.com for the database name I would put wrestli_xmb1 for the username I would put wrestli for the password I would put the cPanel password and for all of the administration things (username and password) i could put whatever I want?? Is all of that right or have I dont something wrong. the forum is at http://www.wrestlingaction.com/forum and it goes straight to an index.php file. If any1 knows what to do or can confirm that I am doing everything wrong then please reply to this. Thanks. Phate Quote
shammer Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 database servername is localhost if you install phpbb through cpanel it should automagically setup your MySQL database. Quote
KevinW Posted February 20, 2003 Posted February 20, 2003 Installing phpbb via the cPanel is as easy as everyone has said it is - even I did it! Listed below are the instructions I wrote down when I did it. I'm wondering if your problem is associated with the fact that you tried to down load and install phpbb manually rather than using cPanel. If so, suggest you go to the TCH help desk and drop a ticket there. Here are my instructions for installing phpbb via cPanel: Setup: 1. Click on Tools, then Setup Forums/Bulletin Boards 2. Enter a directory name to be used (eg. forums), and click Install. 3. A confirmation screen appears. Click on Go Back. Administration: 1. Point your browser to your forum using the following URL format: http://www.******/forums where forums is the name you entered in step 2 above 2. Login using your main web site's account name and pasasword 3. The Administrative phpbb screen will appear Quote
Chasmo Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 For what it's worth, it didn't quite work that way for me. After installing through cpanel, then going to the forum page, I was presented with a phpBB Install page. Didn't take long to figure that out, but something seemed broken with the cpanel install of my test bb. When time comes for a live forum install, it would be nice for it to work as advertised. Dunno, may have to do with my registration being new. Other than a bit of newbie frustration, all is good at the moment though. Quote
TCH-Rick Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 I just tried it out from the cPanel again and something indeed is broken. I have installed it twice before and was able to just jump right into the forum after the install. Now it runs the install program instead, asking for all the information that previously was set up automatically. To top it off, after getting everything set up it wouldn't automatically write the config file so I had to have it sent to me and then FTP it into place manually. Quote
Lianna Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 Hmmm. I wonder if this is related to the new cPanel upgrade that was just performed recently? Let me look into it. Lianna Quote
cjrdanes Posted February 24, 2003 Posted February 24, 2003 I too, am having problems installing phpbb. I believe i have done everything as directed, but i get the following message upon submit: phpBB : Critical Error Could not connect to the database Was there a resolution to this? cjrd ps: I'm new here, so maybe I missed something along the way, but several people mentioned WMB, instead of phpbb which is all that's available on my cpanel. Also, the user manual refers to WMB, as well. Are there more bb systems available? Quote
Lianna Posted February 24, 2003 Posted February 24, 2003 If I'm not mistaken there Phate's problem was resolved by Head Guru via a helpdesk ticket yesterday. Perhaps that may be a better recourse for you as well. But the symptom is not the same in your case. Your symptom sounds more like a case of mistaken database name or config setting. Can you give us some more information like the URL where we can see this error too? or the config settings that you entered (not the password of course)? Thanks. Lianna Quote
cjrdanes Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 ok, here's what i did and what happened. i chose the bb option in cpanel, it took me to a phpBB Setup page ( http://www.danesmedia.com:2082/frontend/bl...on/cgi/xmb.html ) and asked me to define a top level directory which i called : forum upon clicking the "install" button, i was take to phpBB Installation page ( http://danesmedia.com/forum/install.php ) it ask's for: Basic Configuration (which is all pre-populated) Database Configuration Database Server Hostname / DSN: localhost Your Database Name: cjrdanes_phpbb Database Username: cjrdanes Database Password: ****** Prefix for tables in database: phpbb_ (pre-populated) Admin Configuration Admin Email Address: [my email] Domain Name: www.danesmedia.com Server Port: 80 (pre-populated) Script path: /forum/ (pre-populated) Administrator Username: cjrdanes Administrator Password: ****** Administrator Password [ Confirm ]: ****** I clicked the "Start Install" button and endede up with the error message i posted previously. Likely as not, i did something wrong, but I think i did what i was supposed to. I didn't want to open (yet another) ticket if i was just being stupid. Quote
Lianna Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 yep, likely it's the database name itself: Database Server Hostname / DSN: localhostYour Database Name: cjrdanes_phpbb Database Username: cjrdanes Database Password: ****** Prefix for tables in database: phpbb_ (pre-populated) xmb# is usually the db name. Please go to cPanel and click the link to Manage MySQL. That should tell you on that page what your database name is. cjrdanes_xmb1 probably is my guess Also then your table prefix will be xmb1_ Again, let me know. Lianna PS: I didn't want to open (yet another) ticket if i was just being stupid. The *just being stupid* syndrome doesn't work here! You are more than welcome to open a helpdesk ticket for ANY problem that you might be having short of your dog has eaten your favorite shoes! K? Quote
cjrdanes Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 OK got it. Just in case anyone follows this thread, I think what threw me was the pre-populated tabel prefix: phpbb_ I got on the wrong track because I was using phpbb instead of XMB, and didn't realise that the pre-populated prefix was wrong and needed changed. after downloading and then uploading the config.php file (don't ask me, i just followed the directions till they worked) , it appears that all is well. Now i just have to learn to customise the forum, lol. Thanks for everything! Quote
