Nick_ Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 (edited) Hi Everyone. Just a friendly heads up, there is a new virus on the streets. It's called MyDoom and you can find the article at CNN Here's a clip from the article... The worm is contained in e-mails with random senders' addresses and subject lines. While the body of the e-mail varies, it usually includes what appears to be an error message, such as: "The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment." Nick_ Posted January 27, 2004 Author Posted January 27, 2004 Yeah..their pretty nasty. I don't even like to let them get to my computer...however occasionally they do. Unfortunately. Quote
DarqFlare Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 I got one... It was a ZIP file with a PIF file inside. I have analyzation tools. lol... Quote
KT62 Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Hey guys, I was just checking on comments on My Doom. Not on my TCH Site, but one of our home ID's was hit with 500+ Emails in 2 hours last night! I had to take the account down. Mad!!! That was just the incoming virus attempts, not even with the machine infected. Fortunately no sign of it on my TCH site Thumbs Up Quote
schussat Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Slashdot is reporting this morning that mydoom is a DDoS attack on SCO. Yow. I received just two of them yesterday on my academic account, but none on my other accounts -- maybe the university has blocked this one here. -Alan Quote
KT62 Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 Schusst, According to Symantec, the virus exludes .edu domians from it's propagation procedure. - Who ever it is obviously has nothing against academics! Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 I've even received it on my phone. And have deleted about 40 attempts so far in my other accounts. Quote

Just got one in my .edu e-mail! I have it forward to my yahoo account since I don't check the edu one every day. Interesting.... Quote

Yeah, me too -- only a few have trickled my way, but it was into an .edu domain. Either way, it has my department's IT person in quite a huff. (Admittedly, that's not hard to do, although I can't always blame her. I had a hard enough time keeping systems running smoothly at a small non-profit, so I can imagine what it's like to herd a building full of academics around...) -Alan Quote
Nick_ Posted January 27, 2004 Author Posted January 27, 2004 It seems that not all *.edu is excluded from the virus, just a few ISPs. On Trend Micro's site, there is a list of the excluded domains, and a lot of other interesting information, which can be found here : http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyc...IMAIL.R&VSect=T Quote
boxturt Posted January 29, 2004 Posted January 29, 2004 Posting here because I couldn't find the thread. I know this was covered at one point. Email filters DO NOT apply to email forwarders, is that correct? I'm thinking it must be because I'm still getting hammered by this stupid virus. Quote
