Many have asked about the nifty little offline/online graphics that each guru has in their signature line.

There is a custom bit of software that we have installed on a dedicated server and are now offering it to all our clients to use for free.

If you would like to use the offline/online in your sig line, your web pages or whatever please feel free to do so. We did not code the software, its GNU freeware, we are simply providing the server on which it runs.

To use this you need to go to;

http://www.tchstatus.com:8080

And follow the simple instructions.

Enjoy!

Never mind ... I finally figured it out ... but it wasn't intuitive!

;-)

kw

Could you let some of us who're getting the same problem how you fixed it?

Would much appreciate it.

:)

Thanks,

Jennifer ;)

Wow, thanks Head Guru Bill! This is a test. I think. I AM online on my AIM account, but I don't know if it will work!

;) Jennifer

Huh, it says I'm offline.

Ok, that was a Privacy issue in my iChat... just selected to make my privacy level allow anyone. Whew, thanks for the help!

As Jennifer said, sorta, you have to set your IM settings to allow anyone to see that you are online. If you only let your buddies see your status then the little program can't see that you are online.

Posted

Thanks Jim! Just so other guys know... you have to disable your block list... it has to be set to let anyone who wants IM me (as opposed to anyone except those on the block list!)

Update to my previous question. I found a service to use for this. But will TCh offer this service to use for MSN, since 1) I found that the other services msn button looks like !""#&!" and 2) i figure it will go faster if all icons are from same server?

finally got this site working. Lol the funny thing is I'd already implemented this into my site before I found this thread out now I've got an online status indicator straight from the stable resources of TCH !

Posted

I've put these indicators on my blog and it displays fine ie IE but in Mozilla they are just text links. How does one fix that ?

EDIT: Sorry hadn't added the proxy change to mozilla. Plz ignore this post. :)

Well, that kinda makes it a grrr (frustrating, not angry) situation... If you have folks on your ignore list, then you are disabling that list as you can ONLY have it set to allow EVERYONE to see you.

Oh well... trade offs are a part of life :)

What does the onerror part of the html code do it isn't validating with xhtml 1.0 transitional. My MSN onerror bit is fine but for some reason yahoo's wont so I'm wondering whether it is essential or can I remove it ?

I have only been with TCH for the past week or so, but i can honestly say that it has been one of my best decisions. Thanx again.

Well that didn't exactly work the first time! ;)

Thanks once again.

any chance that server is loaded...i'm getting broken images and sometimes an incorrect status. Its either that, or the server thats on has some packet loss coming towards my isp...i wouldn't doubt it...my isp is p00p. Just started happening in the past few days.

We are aware of the load issues on the status server.

I have another server up and ready to take over, I just have not found the time to move the data to the new server.

I will "try" to get that done today/tonight.

Yiipiiee, theres hope for me... I may think of what to do next days on my projects, but never the coding itself. :)

Maybe moving the computer to another room may help!

:)

Great Idea, but then I would not be able to have no fun on the PC, My Parents would be able to see everything.

No More Yahoo! Chatrooms after 12:00 at night ;)

LOL!

OK folks.

I have completed the move to the new server.

The online status should be fully working now.

If not let me know.

Yahoo looks like it is fixed, I see everyone who is on right now as Online. :)

Some of it I think is yahoo itself. Since Online Status still has to connect to the IM providers to get the actual status, it is still problematic if the service is.

My status icons are using a script I've been writing (experimenting with improving the responses) and I've noticed that the last several days Yahoo has been very inconsistant with responding to queries and thus had similar problems as the tchstatus service... one of the reasons I have now added status caching in my script :) ... if there's a 2 minute lag in what my status shows, that's worth it to have instant responses to displaying the images... in most cases... still have to work out a couple things, like the attempts to update the cache can still take some time if the respective IM service is not responding well).

Posted

interesting...my first guess was that you logged off iimproperly...so i tested it out myself...and I believe you are right...something is wrong...more than likely probably yahoo...but we'll let bill answer that.

Im sorry Bill, but i think i found a problem. My yahoo-indicator shows me as online, which im not right now.

I think I might have had the cache settings tweaked up to high on the server.

Please test now and let me know.

Did you take a look at what TCH-Jim said a while back? Make sure your settings are correct.

The last days discussions about MSN-indicator showing "offline" (when we know we are online) on the sites and in forum seems to be a non TCH issue. I have tried a few other providers in the last days, but it still shows "offline".

Check your Privacy settings. Make sure All other users is in your Allow list.

Ive done that. Still problem for me. Last time this happened i think Bill said it was a cache problem from TCH side.

I have been fighting with the firewall rule set on that server, thus this is the reason it has been problematic. It should be fully working now.

My sig looks like this

<A HREF="ymsgr:sendIM?tchgurubill"><IMG SRC="http://www.tchstatus.com:8080/yahoo/tchgurubill">

Why doesn't it work if you put the closing bracked on the IMG tag? That is kind of weird...

Mine has a closing bracket. Could have been a typo.

From what I can gather on my site and from the red-x's in this post, this (much appreciated) service is down.

Any word on when it will be back up?

Posted (edited)

Response time by the Head Guru...3 minutes.

Problem resolution...12 minutes.

Hosting with TCH...priceless!

Yep, working now.

Unrelated, strange forum glitch: I couldn't see your post until I now (when I go to add a reply). I saw from outside the thread that you had posted but, inside the thread, my post was the last post. I tried reloading and even deleted everything from my internet cache and still had the problem. I think I've seen this before, as I anticipate the post I'm writing will be the first up on the second page of posts...just a guess at this point.
