i've had TCH for many months now and i can't believe how lucky i am to have stumbled across them. well not stumbled, i spent a lot of time researching hosts, but here are so many who promise so many things, i consider myself pretty lucky to have decided on TCH.

my other friends have had nothing but horror stories about their hosts: poor support, overly expensive, outright cheating of the customer. meanwhile my experience with TCH has been only good, and it keeps getting better. every obstacle i've had has been met with quality advice.

i've said it before, but the existence of these forums on TCH are perfect illustrations of why they rock. anybody can come along here and post questions or read what people who have already bought hosting have to say. TCH is basically saying, 'we have nothing to hide.' most other hosts won't even give you the time of day.

Yeah, every time I post on these forums, I seem to be making another post of praise about our wonderful hosting company here.

The sad thing is that I check the TCH Forums more than any other forum...

*nods sheepishly*

For over a year I've paid $18.95 a month for web hosting, which is not a competitive price at all these days for what I was getting. (Take TCH's $4/month plan, halve the web space, trim a few other features, and that's basically what I had.) But I had a great deal of skepticism about the support and quality of service that I would get with a cheaper host. I figured if I ever really needed to use tech support, I'd be happy I was paying more because I'd have better support to show for it.

Erm... didn't really work out that way. Right now I'm in the middle of a runaround with my old host, trying to get access to the domain name that I registered through them, so that I can update the nameserver information. So far it's gone something like this:

Me: "Hi there. I'm trying to access the domain that I've registered with you. The domain management tool I used before no longer works, and the new tool I found on your site does not accept my login information."

Support: "Only customers who have signed up in the last three months can log in through that URL. Existing customers can only log in through the billing system or the control panel."

Me: "But... the billing system doesn't give me access to my domain, and the control panel doesn't either, possibly because [this link], [this link] and [this link] in the control panel are all broken. How am I supposed to access my domain if only new customers are allowed to use the management tool?"

Support: "I think you need to call the accounting department for that information." *conveniently forgets to include any contact information for the accounting department*

I guess they've found enough success with their new customers that they don't really have to care about anyone who's actually been supporting them for more than few months. Early this year they rolled out an entirely new suite of web site tools for clients -- NEW clients. They promised to switch over any existing clients to the new system upon request, but never did. They put me on some waiting list months ago and that was the last I heard of it. Meanwhile, old customers are stuck with old tools that are outdated, hard to use, and as I've found out recently, riddled with dead links and other glitches that no one bothers to fix.

Oops... Sorry to rant up your thread with a horror story. :) But maybe the happy TCH folks will be interested to know what it's like on the other side of the hosting fence sometimes. ;)

Hi,

Nearly all Total Choice Hosting Staff have been on the other side of the fence. This company exists beacause Bill knew that the grass was indeed greener on the other side of the fence, and this is now living proof of it.

Horror stories exist about everything though, nothing is perfect, if it was, we would worry. Thats why we have an open policy. We like to know not only when we are doing good things, but when also we do bad things, because then it gives us a chance to improve and become better then before.

Thanks for all the kindness, and I hope you enjoy being with us

One of the things I think really shows just how dedicated TCH is to its customers...

The older servers, take 10 for example, have been around for awhile. Everybody on them seems to be running well enough. Most hosting companies leave old servers as-is simply because everything works well anyway. But TCH isn't so. They upgrade their older servers all the time and keep them up-to-date with any new ones that come online.

Thanks TCH!

When you do a who is lookup is the domain registered in your name and is your email address on the contact information list?

If so, what about transfering the domain name to a new domain account with TCH? As soon as the transfer is complete you will be able to access your domain and change things anytime you want.

I've had exactly the same problem with a domain reseller and that's how I fixed it.

Unfortunately, I wasn't the administrative contact for my domain -- the old host was. Rather, my name was listed but the contact e-mail was theirs. The last time I had accessed the domain I noticed that, but it didn't occur to me to change it, since at the time I had no intention of switching hosts.

I finally did get access to the domain restored, though, and I've since changed both the DNS info and the contact information. The next step will be transferring the domain to TCH.
