BluegrassGardener Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I realize TCH probably wishes to keep this issue quiet for your sakes, but please keep us updated somehow on what is going on with server 27. It's not even showing in server stats now. My website has been up maybe several hours in the last 48 hours. Is there somewhere we can monitor this, if only for the people on Server 27? I'm sure it would be easier for you all to post somewhere instead of answering tickets from the 72 websites on that server. When can we expect the server to be active again? Just some suggestions. P.S. HEADGURU - Instead of just removing this post like the last one, which somehow seemed rude considering the issues we are facing, how about a resolution this time for your clients....
TCH-Thomas Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Server issues needs to be handled at the help desk, so please submit a ticket.
BluegrassGardener Posted October 30, 2006 Author Posted October 30, 2006 I have done this, but would like to know what an estimate of "as quickly as possible." is. Are we talking hours, days, weeks? Just looking for some sort of time estimate so I can move on to other things if I know nothing can be done with the site for awhile....
Head Guru Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 bluegrass I did not delete or move any of your threads. Please remember I dont control everything TCH No ETA on server27, but there is a post in server forums for you now.
TCH-Andy Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Server 27 is showing as a missing line on the status pages, because it doesn't help our techs to have pagers going off every few minutes when we know it's down. The server is shown there but with a null return (so that you can slearly see that it's not green). As you will know, we only installed a new hard disk in this server the other day, and I feel particulaly bad because I chatted to someone only 12 hours ago about that server (they have accounts on it) and I told her not to worry moving, it was on a new hard drive etc now. little was I to know. There is a post in the Server 27 forum. As to HeadGuru removing posts - I've only ever seen him delete spam, or move off-topic elsewhere. (He has closed a few threads to stop any flame wars etc though .
BluegrassGardener Posted October 30, 2006 Author Posted October 30, 2006 Thank you dear sir. Was directing that at HEADGURU as a whole... you are the boss, right? Did not mean to single you out. Sorry for that. I appreciate your opening the post.
TCH-Bruce Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 I am in charge of the forums. I removed the post once the new drive was installed and the server was back online. It was unforeseen that the new drive would fail. Accept my apologies.
BluegrassGardener Posted October 30, 2006 Author Posted October 30, 2006 I am a worrier by nature, as you all have have come to realize, I'm sure . Was just looking for a way to keep track of what is going on. Again, I appreciate the post being opened.
BluegrassGardener Posted October 30, 2006 Author Posted October 30, 2006 Thank you Bruce. No harm done - 20/20 Too many of you bigwigs in here watching this thread. Now, shewww and get back to more important things I'll head on over to the new post and worry:D Thanks again!
mjovery2 Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Could you please indicate the backup status related to the second server? I am asking this because I did quite a few updates yesterday. Did you manage to do any backups when it was up? OR does it mean that any recent work since the replacement server was installed has been lost? Now, I made sure I did a complete backup of my site, and downloaded it from Cpanel after updates yesterday . Would you be prepared to reinstall it , if your backup copies (if any) are older..?
TCH-Don Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 If you downloaded the home directory backup you can upload it in cpanel > backup\ If you downloaded the full backup you would have to upload it to the root and open a help deck ticket to the techs to have them restore it.

I did a full backup : backup-10.29.2006_09-48-19_stcentu.tar (Taken at 4.13 PM UK time) I did take precautions...just as totalchoice recommend repeatedly.... Given the circumstances I do expect some degree of cooperation here. Of course, I cannot upload it until the server/site is operational again! Edited October 30, 2006 by mjovery2
TCH-Don Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 The tech will gladly restore the back up for you. if you see the server back up is older than yours, do the upload and open a ticket.

Actually, with this restore, I'm seeing a later backup. With last restore, I had lost everything back up to somewhere in early September. With this restore I see everything restored up to a day before the server went down the first time. Can't figure that one out. Just wish I hadn't stayed up all last night bringing everything up to date after the first outage. With this restore, I only have two pages to upload. Thanks TCH. I was dreading all day over working on all of that again tonight. Shh, did someone say angels?? Edit: In essence, don't take for granted that this is the same backup as the previous. You may have much less work in the mill to do. ~Best of Luck to the 27 Gang~ Edited October 31, 2006 by BluegrassGardener
Deverill Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Given the circumstances I do expect some degree of cooperation here. Restoring user backups is something the techs have always done when asked via a helpdesk ticket regardless of the circumstances. That's just how good support is here.
BluegrassGardener Posted October 31, 2006 Author Posted October 31, 2006 Wow, made a post and refreshed the screen and the site is up. You all are fast. Guess that's why we love ya'll so much.
willp Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 So what's up with server27? Services have been going up and down all afternoon/evening. Everything except FTP/HTTP is up right now. When HTTP is up, my domain name just points to the default "Apache is working" page.
sarumonkey Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 So what's up with server27? how many users are on sever 27??? a few hundred? you say SCSI HDD replaced, I assume it's one drive... how long does it take to transfer data, retrieve the email etc, that one drive can't be more than 500GB ?? these delays are now over the top can you understand that your reports are getting harder and harder to believe ? regards, -Brett
TCH-Andy Posted November 1, 2006 Posted November 1, 2006 Hi Brett, we've chatted via PM, so I think we know each others views. In short answer - to take the server offline, put a new disk in and install an operating system etc takes 2-3 hours. Swapping another hard disk in, and copying over all the backups takes a couple of hours (much quicker than downloading them all over the network from a remote server). Restoring all the accounts - this means unzipping all that data and adding each account into the cpanel etc (yes it's done by script) but will take 6-12 hours. The problem then was that the new disk crashed (totally unexpected) .... so it was time to put together a new box, new operating system, new hard disk ... and start again. Once that's happened you're ready to go - but there are now thousands of servers out there, that have been storing up emails for domains on server 27 - that now all want to deliver it all at once... Anyway, I'll leave the full lessons learnt from the server27 escapade until it's all sorted. I don't think this is the time to discuss it - lets get it sorted first.
