Banagor Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Hey there, As lots of others here have discovered, Myspace idiots are hotlinking pictures from various sites - including mine. I really want to block them. How? My site is Wordpress. I'm using Cpanel hotlink protection and it isn't working. Just the default ones: Site enabled: my site list Extensions to allow: jpg, jpeg, gif, png, bmp (is this stuff that we allow to be hotlinked or stuff we are blocking?) URL to redirect to: full http:// path to blocking/don't steal picture (it works, I've tried it). Allow direct requests: unchecked. Any idea why this isn't working? Quote
Samrc Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 The settings that work best for me: In the box for allowed urls: list your own website, http://..... and http://www..... any forums (like TCH) that you want to be able to pull in images and any sites you have allowed to link to your images directly (if there are any). Then define the images, etc that you are giving permission to those sites to link to....this list is also the list that is being blocked for any site NOT listed in the allowed box. My current configuration is: jpg, jpeg, gif, png, bmp, asf, avi (my movies were hogging my bandwidth) In order for some people to see some of my little extra smilies, I have to check the box for allow direct requests, otherwise I would have left it unchecked. Then activate the hot link protection. Does your screen say that it is enabled? If not, you still need to turn it on. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 You need to do a bit of testing if you can. Put an image in your website somewhere and on a friends (or even a free website like tripod) see if you can bring up the image. If you can, something is not working correct. I prefer to use htaccess so if you can hotlink outside your website, give us a shout. Extensions to allow: jpg, jpeg, gif, png, bmp I think these are the extentsions which will be pulled. JimE Quote
abinidi Posted May 23, 2006 Posted May 23, 2006 If you tell us the domain you are on, some of us would be willing to try to hotlink a graphic from your site to see if that helps troubleshoot the problem. Just offering to help, if you want it. Quote
chatbug Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 I've got a question... the cpanel "hotlink protection" seems to be enabled by default with the follow URL allowed: >!-d !-f I would guess that they are interpreted by the server as something else... what do they mean? Would setting up .htaccess rewrites be any better or more efficient? Quote
