McCrockett Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Okay. I'm a huge noobie here. I just got my welcome email from TCH and I have one question: Do I need to have an FTP client in order to upload my site to the server? I've used cpanel before with other hosts and they let me upload files directly through cpanel. Honestly, I've never had to download or use an ftp client that I know of. I'ld appreciate as much good info anybody can give me. Thanks!! Quote
stevevan Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 IMHO, it's a personal preference. I prefer to use an FTP client...it's easier for me. You might or might not like it. There are several out there that you can download and use to see if you like it or not. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Depends. FTP lets you upload many files at a time. If you have a site with a few hundred files in it then FTP may be the way to go. cPanel only lets you upload something like 12 files at a time unless you zip it up first and unpack it on the server. Might not seem like a big deal now if you have a small site but if you think you will expand in any way in the future then you may want to learn an FTP program now to make your life easier later down the road. Also, using Zen Cart, I make the changes to the config file on my computer and then upload via FTP. Makes it easier for me but you might find it more usefull to do it via cPanel. Quote
newmannewy Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Hi Mc. U have my problem. Im a newbie too . I have no idea about all this ftp nonsense, i only have to look at it and im confussed. but the people that know seem to prefer it. And yes you can upload via Cpanel .. In your welcome e-mail you should have 2 access points. your http://www. domain.com/cpanel and ur new username and password... Or if your nameservers havent been changed yet . there should be an I.P address version looking somthing like this: 176.283.12/cpanel in your welcome e-mail where you can upload your website and configure it beofre the name servers take effect.. I think im right anyway ! Im sure thats what i done .. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 It's a personal choice. Use what you are comfortable with. I use FTP myself. I do use the File Manager in cPanel occasionally but not often. Quote
TCH-Don Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 For me its a matter of convenience I like to see the two windows in ftp with the web site in one and the folder on my computer in the other and then just highlight and drag files to the other window. Quote
McCrockett Posted February 24, 2006 Author Posted February 24, 2006 Okay. Now that I've tried using Cpanel to upload files - I think I see your points. My ZenCart site has a ton of files in it and I'm gonna need something that can upload in mass proportions. I will try IMHO. Thanks for the suggestions everybody!! Quote
abinidi Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 McCrockett, In case you weren't clear, IMHO isn't an FTP program; it is short for "in my humble opinion." Steve wasn't recommending a specific program. Rather, he was just prefacing his remarks by stating that he was about to share his own opinion. YMMV (Your mileage may vary). If you are looking for a specific FTP program, I'd suggest you look at this thread: http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/i...ic=25066&hl=FTP Quote
McCrockett Posted February 24, 2006 Author Posted February 24, 2006 Oops. He he he! I kinda figured that out the hard way. Wow, I guess it really shows how much of a noob I am. Well, once I got squared away I downloaded the recommended ftp client as suggested in the welcome email and it worked great. Of course, I had to view a few of the tutorials before I got it all figured out. So, I've been working on my site all day and now I'm ready for a break. I'll be back soon - and I got a strange feeling that I might have some questions about setting up email to work with my site. Thanks again everybody!! Quote
TCH-Dick Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I'll be back soon - and I got a strange feeling that I might have some questions about setting up email to work with my site. TCH-JimE Posted February 25, 2006 Posted February 25, 2006 Hello, Good luck with the FTP, as TCH-Dick says, there are tutorials etc to help you out. If you can use windows explorer then using FTP is just as simple, which is one of the many reasons I use it, infact I only ever use the CPANEL version if I am away from home and need to do some file editing. Good Luck and we are always here to help you! Jimuni Quote
