I'm having some issues with FTP on Server 26. New customer, domain jonestx.us

While FTP always CONNECTS, there's a long lag after the connect before anything goes thru. For example, I start to upload a file, I get "connected in 0.04 secs" or something like that, and the transfer actually starts about 30 seconds later.

In addition, I'm developing PHP scripts, which means a lot of testing, recoding, etc. FTP seems to often time out after less than a minute of inactivity, on average. I edit a script, start to upload it, and get either "connection appears dead, retrying", or worse "no port".

I also have problems when uploading a large number of files at once. For example, I uploaded the latest version of phpBB to install it, and as soon as the upload completed, FTP disconnected, without even trying to list the directory.

That's not normal, guys.

I use WS-FTP Professional.

I ran into a similar problem on another host, and it was due to a user on the server pulling an unusually high amount of bandwidth. Everything on that host works fine since they moved that user to a different server.

Please look into this for me. Over all, I'm very happy with your service, but this FTP issue is annoying.

I have been having the same types of problems with WSFTP. I don't have a whole lot of FTP experience, so I wasn't sure how normal it was. But it sure is annoying having to re-connect so frequently. Could it be a WS-FTP problem?

Have you tried using passive mode? I have used ftp on server 26 in the past frequently and never had any problems even when sending large backup files and such. My client is set to passive mode.

I am not on server 26 but I too use WS_FTP (Pro) and have it set on passive mode. I use several other ftp programs (different machines) and WS_FTP is my favorite (by far).

P.S. Rick's observations/suggestions are usually 'right on' (i.e. under the advanced tab, check Passive Mode).

Good luck.

I always use passive mode. Like I said, I experienced the same problem with another host, and after they made some changes on their end, everything worked fine.

I have looked at server26 and find no issues at all with the performance of the server. I was able to upload a 12MB file using smartftp without issue. The upload maxed out my DSL line. Once it was done I was not disconnnected.

I also downloaded ws-ftp pro. Right off the bat I must say what a gosh awful GUI this program has. Anyways I installed the demo using all the standard settings. I was able to successfully upload a 20MB file without issue. This also maxed out my DSL line.

As you can see from my screen shots, this issue does not appear to be server side.

Here is what we need you to do.

Answer the following:

Are you behind a firewall?

Did you use the standard install of ws-ftp?

Have you tried another FTP client?

Post a tracert from the computer with the ftp problems to server26.totalchoicehosting.com

The issue isn't FTP speed. Speed is fine once it connects.

Yes, I'm behind a ZoneAlarm firewall, but disabling the firewall doesn't correct the problems.

I get the same results with my registered WS-FTP Pro, with the trial version of CUTE-FTP and the free program Filezilla.

Tracert times look fine.

Connection to TCH in all aspects is fine, web performance, connection to email, even the initial FTP connect, all normal. It's that 20-30 second DELAY after the connect before anything happens, and the frequent disconnects, that are annoying.

I found the same delays when using my laptop from work with a dial-up account. Initial connection was fine, but a delay after any FTP command is issued before it actually takes effect.

As you can see, tracert times are fine. It typically reports "Connected in 0.04 seconds" when sending a command to the FTP server....then there's a long delay before the command actually takes effect.

I'm not too worried about it at this point. The site is basically developed and most of the changes to it from this point on will be a result of user interaction (posting new links, message board, etc.) It's just a family "keep-in-touch" site, most of it isn't even available to the public.
