I'm new at this, I just got an account.

What I would like to do is setup a subdomain (pinkbear.liquidcouch.net). what exactly does this do?

I want to give somebody their own ftp account, and give them that subdomain to upload their site to with their ftp account.

I created an ftp account for him and it comes up as liquidcouch.net/pinkbear and it ALSO put his webpage at the pinkbear.liquidcouch.net subdomain i set up. why?

I basically want pinkbear.liquidcouch.net to be HIS site, HIS website. so I guess somehow the pinkbear ftp space and his public_html folder are linked to that subdomain?

any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Alright your problem gives me a worry, because it sounds like your hosting other people's sites on your domain which is against the Acceptable Use Policy.

Web Sites

TotalChoice Hosting provides storage space and access for web sites through its Web services. TotalChoice Hosting will not routinely monitor the contents of your web sites. You may only host one domain per virtual account, resellers are allowed to host unlimited domains.

I don't want to host his site, it's a part of my site, but it's the part he will be working on.

He has his own webspace already. It is a family member, lives with me, etc.

In essence what I'm trying to do is give him an ftp account so he can upload what he's worked on to the part of the website design he is responsible for. I suppose I could just give him the general access password but I'd rather not.

if this is unacceptable or is against policy, then either I will upload the stuff myself or look at other options.

I dont' want to break rules.

Provided that the site is relational to your main site, this is acceptable. Collaborative site building is a perfect example of the Acceptable Use of your TCH space.

Alright, I always got to check and since you said it would be HIS site, that's what made me a little caucious.

Now that we got that past us, I'm not sure if I understand where your problem is. You sound like you pretty much know how to get the subdomain set up so where is the problem? :)

Would this mean that I could not have subdomains for friends and relatives?

Examples:

dad.family.com for my dad

mom.family.com for my mom

bestfriend.family.com for my best friend?

Posted

Let me see if I can clarify this some using the above example. Say I bought www.keeler.com and wanted to give each one of my family members their own sub-domain.

mom.keeler.com

dad.keeler.com

sister.keeler.com

What you can do:

If the website as a whole is about your family, and want to say profile all your close relatives with their stats, likes, dislike or something to that effect that would be okay. This is okay because its a "whole" in the part of the site. It's like using the sub-domain name forums.keeler.com to lead to the forums section of my site. That's not its own seperate enity, it's just a segment of the big picture.

What you can NOT do:

Alright using the same example, say Mom wanted to have on her subdomain focused on her selling pocket lint on E-bay (remember these are JUST examples people! I promise my mother doesn't do this...) and my sister wanted to have her subdomain all about the national hot rod association her her love for it. As you can see these topics DON'T have anything to do with the generic point of www.keeler.com, and so this would be breaking the Acceptable Use Policy.

So there you have it, hope this helps explain this a little bit more, since it's a question that comes up a lot around here it seems.

OK, just to make sure I don't violate the AUP.

Lets say I have www.keeler.com. I create the subdomain crafts.keeler.com for my wife to post crafts for sale on EBay. Does this viotale the AUP?

The section of the AUP you referenced states:

You may only host one domain per virtual account, resellers are allowed to host unlimited domains.

To me this means I can only have one "domain." I am taking the definition of domain from Webopedia.com.

I don't read this as I can not have as many sub domains dedicated to as many topics as I like. If that indead is the issue I think the AUP should be changed to say that.

So.. all that said.. I have a domain.. dddezigns.com. I've made subdomains... which I take care of exclusively.. adoptions.dddezigns.com, family.dddezigns.com, and genealogy.dddezigns.com.. which were all basically on my site to begin with.. I just split them into subdomains to make it neater and more organized. Was I wrong to do this?? Do I need to undo all my work and put it back how it was?

My main site is graphics... adoptions.dddezigns.com fits in with that.. family.dddezigns.com is about me, my husband, kids and grandkids.. genealogy.dddezigns.com is about my ancestors...

Now I'm going to sit here and worry if I goofed

cmuskett,

It's not so much that you've used subdomains, but that you have multiple individual, non-related sites hosted inside one hosting account under one domain name.

As presented in your post, this is against the policy here. Sorry.

A single account/site for your family, including the geneology site as a subdomain would indeed be acceptable.

A single account/site for you designs and a subdomain with your adoption site (while on the line) is acceptable.

A single account/site for all four is not as they are not all clearly related to the main site (the domain).

Ok... thank you for clearing that up.. altho the sites are all related to me.. It's my life... but... I wish it was spelled out a little clearer in the AUP. I will get that changed... again... as soon as I can. I am due to go on vacation on Monday for a week.. I will try to get it all taken care of before then.
