oxyg3n Posted June 9, 2003 Posted June 9, 2003 Hello. I just got my service up and was looking at the folders that are "preinstalled" on my webspace. I know that I need the public_html folder to store my pages in, but what do I need the following folders for: etc mail public_ftp <-- I think this may be to set up ftp accounts. tmp www I am asking this because I would like to delete all folders that I will not be using. I like to keep organized:) But dont want to delete something that is critical for my site to run. Also, what are the following files: shadow .htaccess.1054953771 .imapv4cp5c quota passwd Can I delete these also. I will not be using frontpage. Thanks for any help you vcan give me. Quote
TCH-Sales Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 Best advice I can give you is if you don't know what it does, then don't delete it! public_html is the folder where your site is stored, and www is a shortcut to the public_html folder. mail is where your email stuff is kept. tmp is where temporary files are kept. Some of the other files and folders have to do with CPanel things. Second bit of advice I can give you is just ignore them. I wouldn't go around deleting folders that are there by default, or you might be paying a visit to technical support a little earlier than expected. Quote
Lianna Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 Most of the files and folders that are preinstalled in your space are necessary for proper function of all the bits-n-pieces. They should not be deleted! What you really need to be concerned with is the contents of your public_html folder. Keep your focus for organization within that folder and you'll be dandy. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 Hi, Don't go deleting any htaccess, quota or passwd files as these are not just used by frontpage! As noted above, concentrate about the public_html file, thats the most important! Jim Quote
oxyg3n Posted June 10, 2003 Author Posted June 10, 2003 Hello, Thanks for the advice guys, I just pretend I dont see those other files. Now, I have another question. Do we have "shell access" for our site. I want to put up a forum of my own phpbb and in the instructions for installing it, it says that if you have shell access you can just upload the phpbb.zip and unzip it from the server. Otherwise I would have to unzip the files here at my computer and the upload all of them separately. Thanks Quote
TCH-Rick Posted June 10, 2003 Posted June 10, 2003 You can upload the phpbb.zip using any ftp program or cPanel File Manager and then use the File Manager to unzip it. If you have any problems let me know but unzip is installed on all the servers now. Quote
oxyg3n Posted June 10, 2003 Author Posted June 10, 2003 Thanks for the fast response, I will upload it this afternoon when I get home from running errands. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted June 11, 2003 Posted June 11, 2003 Hi, I did this upload 2 weeks ago and it went like a dream, let us know if you have any problems! Jim Quote
