Securing Your PC - Just a small post detailing the best security software I've found for locking down your PC and protecting it from intruders. If you're looking for Linux Security as well, insecure.org recently released their Top 100 Security Tools, many of which I have used with favorable results.

Good link --- with good suggestions.

I've been a little disappointed of late with Adaware's tech support. I am currently comparing it to SpyBot.

I've been using Trend for the last several year's on both personal PC's and Microsoft Exchange Server's. Trend has consistenly worked well - with NO viruses getting through -- and automatically checks for updates every hour.

I've been using SpyBot ever since LavaSoft decided they wanted to wait 'months' to release an update for ad-aware...

SpyBot got a huge lead during that time.. I don't think I will be going back to ad-aware anytime soon..

So guys, is it time for me to retire my AdAware Plus? Gimme the real deal here. Is SpyBot better and why? What's it cost, etc.

...on my way to follow KW's link right now....

I used Adaware and recently downloaded SpyBot *freeware* and it catches a lot more than Adaware ever did  I'm about to uninstall Adaware

I've also come across Spybot S&D, and I have to say it does a great job without locking up my computer, as Ad-Aware has been doing. It also has the ability to "immunize" IE against a number of browser hijackers and other things that mess with it. Spybot also mentions another suite of programs by JavaCool Software, which do an even better job of getting rid of browser hijacks. It's also important to note that Spybot S&D does a much quicker scan than Ad-Aware's default scan, at least on my comp.

I had a computer on the table last night that had more spybot software on it than I had ever seen on one machine. Over 150 instances on the first pass using SpyBot until it came to a file called c2.lop . I tried several more times to clean the system with "SpyBot", but each time it got to the c2.lop file it hung, and that was it. After some research using my fav. search engine, I found alot of info on the file C2.lop and also found a testimonial from somebody who said the only thing they had found to remove it was AdAware Ver. 6. I d/l it and it did indeed take care of what SpyBot had been choking on.....

I'm not trying to say that makes AdAware better, just that for last night it was like the lone ranger for one tired tech...

I had the opposite experience LOL. I had something called Xupiter on my computer.. Adaware never caught it and I could not uninstall it or remove any of the files. I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy and poof!! like magic... Xupiter was removed from my computer

I have used,or should say did use, AdAware for over a year and it worked very well.I thought. Downloaded SpyBot this afternoon. I ran AdAware,it found 8 files and cleaned them up. Ran it again just to be sure. I then ran SpyBot. It found 23 files AdAware missed. I also had the C2.lop problem. Read this to fix:

http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboar...rum/140383.html

I'm going to uninstall AdAware now.

Thanks

I see it all depends on the machine, and the problems that machine may be having. ? though... what version of AdAware was everybody using? I was using version 6 that I d/l yesteday.

Curtis, I also was on the page that you linked, but it appeared to me that by following their advice, it was just going to exclude the c2.lop file in it's search, and I didn't see how that was going to solve my problem....

Yes,This will avoid scan of C2.lop until a bugfix comes out. SpyBot says they are working on a fix but can not give a date when it will be ready. I don't have c2.lop are any its files so bypassing for now works for me.
